shut out in az, too late for mexico?

Desertbull, I just spoke to Mexafari this morning. They are aware of the problem. Bad timing to get hacked!!!! If someone wants info on Mexafari, you can call Javier - 011-52-662-157-0914 or look in the hunt story section to read about my hunt with Mexafari last year. You can also read some other hunt stories from hunters who went with our sponsoring outfitters. I will have a new hunt story up for Howell wildlife outfitters within the hour also. Amanda

shut out in az, too late for mexico?

No, it's not too late to get a Mexico tag. I recommend checking into the outfitters that sponsor this website. They have some great Mexico Hunts available. Go to my main webpage and look at the button ads on the right hand side of the page to see the outfitters that help support this website. Click on the buttons to go to their websites and review the information. Amanda

    Another newbie on board:

Welcome Switchback! Glad you are here. Switchback is a bow, huh? When I saw the name I immediately thought of all the windy switchback roads I drive, like the one up through Malay Gap and to the Black River...endless switchbacks! Guess you can tell I am not a big bowhunter.... Anyway, welcome and hope you enjoy the forum! Amanda

    SUNSETS pics...

Here's another from the hunting season last year. This is actually a sunrise taken out the window of my plane as we took off from Durango Mexico and headed home. I thought it was an interesting shot and a nice end to a pleasant trip.

    Video Review

Coues Deer is King is very good, but I also really liked Dead on Elk and Coues. If anyone is interested in getting one of the videos, visit the CW.com bookstore. Dead on Elk and Coues was made by a local AZ boy from Thatcher. Amanda

    SUNSETS pics...

Wow, I really enjoy looking at all your pics! Great ones! I remember one pic that Tommy M. had posted last year, I set it as my desktop for a long time. Hopefully he will repost it. If not, I will try and find and post it for him. Here is one from my dec hunt last year. I was backpacked in solo and just getting ready to get some sleep when this sunset started. Pics don't do it justice.....but it still is a nice memory...
  8. Wow, that's great Scottyboy!!! Thanks so much for sharing all your great photos and experiences. How cool to be able to sort of tag along with you. Sounds like you picked a good wife Scottyboy!!! Amanda

    Fawn Crop

It's still pretty early to see WT fawns. They tend to drop them in July and Aug. Of course, I don't think we will have the good fawn crop like we had last year due to the drought.... Amanda

    SAN CARLOS REZ update

FYI - fire restrictions in effect for San Carlos Apache Moccasin Saturday, July 01, 2006 Areas outlawed to campfires Published: Friday, June 30, 2006 2:07 PM CDT E-mail this story | Print this page Now in effect, the San Carlos Apache Tribe has closed the following areas to everyone regarding camp fires of any type. These areas include: The Black River Area, Wooden Crossing, Coupon Tank Area, Ten of Diamonds, Bee Flat, Anderson Flat, anything north of Point of Pine. Area closures are due to continuing drought and thousands of acres of dead trees due to pine beetle infestation. These conditions dramatically increase the potential for wildfires to spread. This closure is for the protection of the public health, safety, and property. These areas are: Seneca Lake, Point of Pine Lake, Dry Lake, Upper and Lower Cienega, Double Circle, Pole Corral, and Clover Tank. Will only allow butane camping stove (no charcoal). Areas must be clear and fire breaks of at least ten feet should be established around the camp area. No smoking, except with in enclosed vehicle or building above the Nantac Rim area. Talkalai Lake, San Carlos Lake, and the communities of Bylas, San Carlos, Peridot, Skillcenter, Cutter, and Beverly Hills are open to the public with the following restrictions: Burn permit, No burning on RED FLAG days (windy days or extreme conditions), Burn period 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call dispatch of burning activity, Operating combustion engine with proper spark arastor. Those exempt from this order: Any Federal, State, Tribal employees, such as Tribal resource managers, local officer, or any member of an organized rescue or firefighter force in the performance of official duty. Personal home site leases are exempt for the purpose of outdoor cooking, if an adult is present. This order will become effective immediately and will supersede the last fire restriction issued by the tribe. The tribe thank everyone for their cooperation.

    CW T-shirt stuff

I second what Allen said. It sure is great having some hunter artists around here. And don't forget Bill Quimby's work which is what I used to create the stickers and logos and such for this website. I love his drawings.

    CW.com hats

I have posted photos of the low profile hats and you can order them in the bookstore. I know at $18.50 they are expensive, but believe it or not, I would have to sell them for $25 each just to break even due to the cost of getting the design put into the embroidery machine in addition to the cost for the work on each hat and the hat itself. If you are interested in a hat, click on the link below. CouesWhitetail.com low profile hats! Amanda

I would love to spend some time checking out Jim's collection and measuring them. Maybe sometime this fall I will have time. Josh, let's coordinate sometime to do it. I saw some of his ginormous sheds when I spoke with him at the Whitetail Banquet in Tucson several months ago. Jaw-dropping for sure....... Amanda

    excitement this PM

Bears are having a very tough time this year due to the drought and lack of food in the woods for them. Here in Globe, AGFD has killed several bears that wandered into town looking for food and water. One of them was a 450 lb bear with no fat on it! We recently had a kid swatted by a bear near winkleman while he was sleeping with friends near the Gila River. I also had a bear (a smaller bear, like 100 lbs) come into my backyard this year. That was a first in my 15 years living in this house. I wonder if he smelled a deer skull I had soaking in some water in the shed in the backyard. That was where the bear was.... Or maybe he just wandered through randomly. We also have water and some birdseed in the backyard but he didn't seem interested in that. Mostly he just seemed to want to get away and out of there. antler point restrictions

I personally do not like antler point restrictions. I think they just shift the hunting pressure to the older bucks. And I think they result in a larger number of deer being shot and left in the field due to hunter error. I think antler point restrictions are just another way to lower hunter success while maintaining the number of permits sold. It's what I dislike about many wildlife agencies. They spend so much time trying to come up with ways to increase hunter opportunity while decreasing success so that more people can be in the field without harvesting more bucks. If you want larger bucks in your population, why not just reduce the hunting pressure on the population in general (ie reduce the number of permits issued). If you are not worried about producing large antlers, issue more permits. Buck:doe ratios will decrease, age of harvest will decrease and average size of antlers on harvested deer will decrease. Lowering permit numbers increases buck:doe ratios, increases age and size of harvested deer. It's very simple and it's the type of management I like best, probably because of my time as the biologist for San Carlos. On San Carlos we did both trophy and non-trophy management and it was, in general, just a matter of issuing more or less permits to allow the males to grow old and large, whether it was elk or deer or sheep or antelope or bear or whatever. For those of you interested in learning more about recent research on antler point restrictions, you can search the internet, or better yet, call or email Leonard Ordway or Brain Wakeling at AGFD. I am sure they would be aware of whatever research is out that and would be willing to talk about it with anyone. Amanda
