Glad you liked the video, thanks for the report! Yes, they are working on another one. I don't think it's anywhere near completed, but I know they are getting some AZ hunts on film this year and will probably get more in Mexico in a couple months. Amanda

Congrats to your girlfriend! Glad she had a successful hunt! Amanda

This is another question answered in Jim Heffelfinger's new book, Deer of the Southwest. He is currently in the process of setting up a website to sell the book online. Or I may be able to carry it in the bookstore here, we are still working out the details on that. Anyway, deer have great night vision. They have a special reflective membrane in their eyes that helps them get more out of the available light at night. Hopefully Jim will come here to the forum and give out some more info based on what research has been done on a deer's vision. Amanda

Hormones are responsible for causing breeding behavior and those hormones are influenced by photoperiod (the amount of daylight vs darkness during each 24 hr period). There is a lot more information about this in the new book by Jim Heffelfinger called Deer of the Southwest. He has a whole section discussing the role of photoperiod on the rut. And he talks about any evidence related to whether the moon influences the rut (as I understand it, there is no evidence to date). I will email Jim and ask him to come answer some of the questions you guys have brought up. Amanda

I got the shipment in of the brand new Extreme Coues DVD. If you want to order one, visit the video section of the bookstore. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/videos.htm Amanda -
kast and anyone else wanting a sticker, please email me with your request, don't post it here. amanda@coueswhitetail.com I can get colors other than white, but it usually requires extra time to special order them. Stickers can be made to any size, but the standard size is 30 inches for a vehicle and 15 inches for an ATV. You can get larger ones for a toyhauler. Amanda

Hi Guys, Many of you have asked to see some photos from my recent trip to Alaska. I was up there for the annual Wildlife Society meeting in Anchorage in late Sept. (For those interested, The Wildlife Society is a professional association of wildlife biologists and there is a meeting every year to discuss current research.) Anyway, it was my first trip to Alaska and although I wasn't hunting or fishing, I got to see lots of wildlife and great scenery. I was there for about two weeks and it rained pretty much the whole time except for about a couple half-days of sun. Still the rain wasn't all that heavy and I was able to get out and see the sights. Temps were great with it being generally in the mid-50s. I went with my father, who isn't a big hiker, so we didn't do much of that, most of our trip was by car or boat. The foliage seemed to be at peak and it was wonderful to see! Endless expanses of green and gold with some red from the tundra-type vegetation at the tops of the ridges. We did an overnight to Denali National Park and the moose were rutting so it was great seeing them and hearing them grunting and following females. Here are some moose pics. Note the bull in the second photo only has one horn. It was moose season when we were there and some hunters killed a moose and left the bones and such along side the road near this pond. I checked out the gut pile and I could not believe the size of the heart from this moose!!! It was bigger than my head. Coosefan can probably attest to this from the moose he killed recently in Alaska. But man those things are amazingly large. Other wildlife seen included Dall Sheep, Tundra Swans, Beluga Whales (which are all white), Dall's Porpoises, lots of otters, seals, endangered stellar sea lions and Bald Eagles and my first encounter with Ptarmigan. We were driving somewhere late in the afternoon and I saw a flock of white birds soar across a ridge and land in some rocks. Got the binos out and saw they were Ptarmigan, probably Willow Ptarmigan. Figured Scottyboy might enjoy these pics being a bird hunting fool! sorry they aren't better pics! They are digiscoped. Here is an eagle that we saw on a stump tearing apart some kind of bird, perhaps a gull. Some glaciers from a cruise we took: Some cool artwork and a neat looking store. This beaver pond was loaded with salmon!!! They had already spawned and were pretty much just waiting to die. And check out the size of this bear skull I am holding!! This is at a neat nature center located near the salmon pond shown above. They had closed sections of their trails due to attacks by bears on hikers. the bears were congregating to eat salmon at certain areas.

I will be selling this DVD on this site, but the shipment hasn't arrived. Hopefully I will have it within a few days. I will let you all know when I get it. In the meantime here is a promo clip from the DVD: Extreme Coues DVD promotional clip Amanda -

Great report! I enjoy watching the fawns and their antics too. Glad you had a fun hunt. Got a digital camera? if not, consider getting one, then you could snap a few pics of your adventures to share with folks here (and at home). Amanda

my longest has been 300 yards and that was on my coues buck in Mexico last year. I don't practice longrange shooting, so although I think I could probably shoot farther, I am not comfortable with it. I prefer 200 or less. And many of my shots on coues have been within 50 yards. Amanda

Opening day frastration
CouesWhitetail replied to TexasHunter's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Well, I certainly can understand the frustration, but at least you got to see a great buck and harvest a nice buck too! And now you know where to hunt next year if you get a tag. Amanda -
It does kind of look like it's on the decline but it's mass isn't overly large, so probably not a real old buck. You didn't happen to look at the tooth wear on that buck to age it did you? Did he seem like a young buck? Amanda

Wow, great buck! If you want him posted in the main photogallery, email me with some larger pics and hunter info. Amanda -
Wow!!! Great story. Geez, are we gonna have to work that hard on my hunt with you next month?? Where did you keep your deer while you spent the night out there? I would be a bit nervous sleeping out there with blood on me and deer meat nearby! Thanks for taking the photos, really adds to the story! Did Chris ever get a buck? Amanda
-
Congratulations on your fine buck! And just an FYI for everyone....if you want your photos posted in the main photogallery, please email them to me with the hunters name, unit, date of kill, shot distance, score if you have it and anything else you think is interesting. amanda@coueswhitetail.com Amanda

Yes, as beautiful as the pictures are, they don't really capture the grandeur of the place. If you get a chance to go.....take it! Amanda

Cute pic of your daughter glassing! And yes, coues and mulies can hang around together. But perhaps it was just an adult WT doe and a yearling WT...? Amanda
