The statement of a lifetime
CouesWhitetail replied to coues7's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Matt, I am a member and on the board of directors for the ADA. The board meetings are open to the public. The ADA is ALWAYS looking for volunteers to help out with any project. Stanley and TLH here on the forum are a big part of the youth camp program. KGaines is also on the board of directors of the ADA. And Allen has helped the group for several years and was on the board. KHarris is also a board member and frequents this forum. So yes, there are many of us that have firsthand experience with the ADA and if you are looking for a group to join, I suggest it's a good one. Amanda -
Heads up for you Mexico hunters
CouesWhitetail replied to Kevin's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
That's a pretty scary report you found there RedRabbit. Wow.... Looks like the texans owned a large company in laredo. I certainly hope they are returned safely.... http://www.lpina.com/ -

Congratulations on another excellent buck Riley! Thanks to Stan and the ADA and the game warden for providing the youth camp! Amanda

Way to go Casey!!! Nice buck and nice sticker on your truck ! Amanda

Wow, sorry to hear of your loss Jack, but at least you are treating it as a wake-up call and making some serious changes. Good Luck and thanks for sharing your story. Amanda

No, they don't have to ask permission, although most people do. They emailed me awhile back to exchange links. I checked the site out briefly and saw it was high-fenced and didn't pursue it. I didn't notice the link to my site previously. Amanda

Coues Deer Sanctuary is not an advertiser on this site. They simply have a link on their site to mine and to others like B&C and SCI. There are many other sites on the web that are not advertisers that provide a link to my site. I don't see it as a problem. The more links to this site the more people know about it. I am not going to add a link to their site or accept them as a sponsor. I don't support high-fenced, farm-raised game for hunting. Amanda

November Moon
CouesWhitetail replied to TwoGuns's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I was just using my regular swaro 15's, no extra lens or coating. Not sure why you would need a special lens. I don't think the moon is so bright that it hurts your eyes like the sun would. Amanda -

Great pics! I tried the same thing, but I think yours are better. Mine are through my 15's. What magnification did you shoot through? here is mine: -
Yes deer can have tusks (upper canine teeth). They are a remnant of their evolutionary past when deer had large tusks/canine teeth. They are uncommon and usually very small. And as you mentioned sometimes so small they don't poke through the gumline. This is yet another topic covered in Jim Heffelfinger's new book on deer of the southwest. You can order the book on www.deernut.com. Hopefully Jim will come and give more info on the research about deer tusks. here are some pictures of a coues skull I took that had small tusks.

Yaqui and the Coues
CouesWhitetail replied to Diamondbackaz's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
here is a link to a site with more info and a video. Haven't watched the whole video but I think it includes yaqui deer dance songs. http://wordsandplace.arizona.edu/seyewailo.html http://wordsandplace.arizona.edu/seyewailo_transcript.html http://wordsandplace.arizona.edu/seyewailo_comment-disc.html Just had dinner last night with someone who said some of the yaquis have been having problems with crossing the border with deer they are going to use in their rituals. I think the border patrol is worried that there are drugs stuffed in the deer. So the deer get ripped up from what I hear. Amanda -

Great plate! Amanda -
I personally have not seen any evidence of the moon influencing deer activity. I have glassed deer up feeding at sunrise after moonless nights as well as moonfull nights. I do a lot of hiking around at night for my wildlife job and I see (or hear if it's really dark) deer up moving around on all kinds of nights. They have great night vision and I don't think they need the moon to see what they are doing. I think temperature influences when they feed and move much more than the moon does. Amanda

If anyone is interested in Jim's book, you can order it on his website (www.deernut.com). He decided he would sell them directly so I won't have it in the bookstore here, but it is certainly a very useful book for hunters. It addresses lots of the questions that have come up in the forum lately about what influences deer behavior. Amanda

Thanks for all the great info Jim!! and congrats on that excellent Mule deer buck! I too have seen deer very active at sunrise on mornings following a full moon. Amanda

Great bucks Allen. Of course that is all we expect from Duwane's camps I love to hear about guys from this website meeting up and getting to spend time in the field. Nice job showing off your sticker Chef!! Amanda -
here are the results from a quick google search for rifle ranges in Tucson. I think I have driven past the one on valencia and it looks pretty nice. It's in the southeast part of town. I don't know if Jensen's really has a rifle range, but it came up in the listings and you can call and check.
