Thanks DCM. I appreciate you posting those resumes. I also received this list of applicants for this commission appointment (thanks Blaine Bickford for emailing me that). We have resume's posted for three of the candidates. I don't have any for the others. Commission Appointment

DCM, I have posted Don Martin's resume and some background in another thread. here is a link to that for those of you that want to read up on his qualifications. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...?showtopic=5145 Anybody have the resume's of the other candidates? And, by the way, the AZ Sportsmen for Wildlife has cancelled the "meet the cadidates" meeting that was scheduled for tonight. They weren't able to get all the candidates there. I think they may still hold a forum like that in the future. Amanda

    Diary

I think it's a great idea to write down details of a hunt shortly after the hunt. I have done a diary off and on over the years. It's hard to take the time to do it, but I think it's well worth it. Amanda

AZ Sportsmen for Wildlife hosting forum

Just a heads-up the meeting scheduled for tonight has been cancelled. Subject: Commission Candidates Meeting Canceled Importance: High Suzanne asked me to get this to you as soon as possible. Please let everyone know that tonight's meeting has been canceled. With such short notice from the Governor's office, it has been impossible to get the candidates for the Game & Fish Commission seat to a meeting before the Governor's comment period closes this Thursday, February 15th. Suzanne will follow up with more information soon. Pete
  10. Arizona Sportsmen for Wildlife will be hosting a forum on Monday, February 12 at the Cabela's Store in Glendale from 7pm -9pm to meet candidates who have applied for consideration to serve on the Arizona Game & Fish Commission. As of last Friday we learned that there are six candidates who have filed with the Governor's Office of Boards and Commission to fill the seat being vacated by Joe Melton. We have extended an invitation to all of the candidates and asked them to attend our forum. To date we have received feedback from three of the six that have indicated they will make every effort to attend. The format for the forum will be consistent with the one held last year. This is the opportunity for sportsmen and representatives from sportsmen organizations to hear directly from the candidate and ask questions on issues they feel are of importance. We hope you will plan to attend. Since we are so late receiving the names of candidates, we apologize for the short notice period. We are, however, hopeful that most or all of the candidates will attend. Thank you for all that you do to conserve Arizona's wildlife and its habitat. Suzanne Gilstrap

I know Don Martin is seeking support for his bid to become a commissioner. I have pasted in an email he sent out asking for support (in the attachments to this post you can see his resume and letter of support from Blaine Bickford from August when he was nominated as Volunteer of the year which describes his dedication to sportsmen). If you like his qualifications, then please email a letter of support to the governor's office (see the contact email listed in email below). Deadline to do it is Feb 13, so time is short. I believe you can send letters of support for more than one candidate if you want. Don's phone number is in his resume and I am sure he would love to talk to sportsmen; if you have any questions for him, give him a call. He has done a tremendous amount of work on behalf of sportsmen for many years. Sent: Tuesday, February 06, 2007 2:10 PM Subject: Support for Arizona Game & Fish Commission appointment Ladies & Gentlemen: I am writing to you today seeking your support for my bid to be appointed to the Arizona Game & Fish Commission, replacing Mr. Joe Melton from Yuma whose term has expired. I know that some conservation groups have already submitted letters to the governor's office via Ms. Dora Vasquez dvasquez@az.gov in support of one or more candidates, but I am asking for your individual and personal support. I am attaching a copy of my resume and a letter that Mr. Blaine Bickford sent to the AZ G&F Dept. last year outlining my volunteer efforts for the citizens of Arizona for your review. If you choose to do so, you can still write a letter to the governor via Ms. Vasquez's office. It is important that this occurs right away as next Tuesday (13th) is the deadline for the governor's office to receive them. If you know of friends who could write a letter, please forward my information on to them. One last thing I'd like to bring to your attention. Despite the fact that Mohave County has over 1,000 miles of Colorado River shoreline, and is home to some of the state's desert bighorn sheep and mule deer herds, there has not been a resident of Mohave County on the Commission for over 35 years! The Commission make up should include people from all parts of Arizona to ensure that there is adequate representation of all the citizens of the state. If you have any questions about my candidacy, please do not hesitate to call. Sincerely, Don Martin don_martin_resume.doc Blaine_Bickford__s_nomination_letter_2006_for_Don_Martin.doc

    Favorite Photo of 2006

Here are a couple of my favorites from this year. I must say that I didn't take the photos, Scott Adams did, but it was when I was hunting with him this year in Unit 27. His camera was always more at the ready than mine, so he ended up with some of the best photos from my hunt. Hopefully Scott won't mind that I picked his photos! I am sure he has many others than will be his favorite. (like the one of his wife's buck!) the first photo shows the bigggest bodied ram I have EVER seen. It's is absolutely HUGE!! Check it out..... And the second photo is of Scott and me and his son sitting around a great campfire we made on our backpack hunt. What a great evening that was! Sorry the photo is so blurry but it captures a very nice memory from my hunt. Thanks Scott!

  18. Just a reminder to archery hunters to please report their kills to AZGFD. The Arizona Game and Fish Department reminds archery hunters that they must contact a Game and Fish office in person or by telephone at 1-866-903-3337 within 10 days of harvesting a deer. “It’s very important for archery hunters to comply with this reporting rule,” says Leonard Ordway, the department’s game chief. “The data is crucial in helping us assess archery deer harvest so we can make sound wildlife management decisions.”

  20. Action Alert—Immediate Attention Needed! Legislature To Hear Testimony on House Bill 2443, the Off-highway Vehicle Recreation Bill · The Game and Fish Commission has voted to Support this bill. (5-0) · Proposed Amendment The Arizona House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources and Public Safety will hear testimony on House Bill 2443 this Wednesday February 7, 2007 at 9:00am in House Hearing Room 1. This bill has been introduced to the Legislature by Representative Jerry Weiers and is the result of the Workgroup’s and a broad coalition of stakeholder’s collaborative efforts. The language may be found here. Keep in mind that this is the first major step in a lengthy legislative process and there will be opportunities for change. In order for this legislation to be successful it will require a grass roots effort from not just off-highway vehicle users but all stakeholders. It is important that legislator’s hear your voice of support for this bill. Get the word out to your membership and encourage them to phone, write or e-mail their representatives and the committee members listed below. The more positive support the better. Below are some talking points that can be used to convey the importance of getting this bill passed. HB 2443 Provisions Off-highway vehicle recreational use has increased by roughly 350 percent, or nearly 39 percent per year since 1998. During this time funding for off-highway vehicle recreation has grown by an average of approximately 4 percent, essentially only keeping pace with inflation. While keeping pace with inflation, the funding, and as a result OHV recreation management has come far from keeping pace with the dramatic increase in OHV recreation in Arizona. Appropriates funding to bolster resources for Off-highway Vehicle Management in Arizona in key areas identified by stakeholders including off-highway vehicle facilities, access, law enforcement, education and safety. Provides new laws that will better protect Arizona’s natural resources from inappropriate use of OHVs. Improvements to safety equipment including a requirement for individuals younger than 18 to wear appropriate headgear. An annual flat fee ($20) replaces the Vehicle License Tax for the registration of ATVs: Reduced cost to consumer (VLT currently averages $97 per ATV, new cost anticipated to be much lower) Includes ATVs, ATCs, (Dirt Bikes and here-wheelers), and UTVs (utility Vehicles like “Rangers”, “Rhinos”, and “Gators”) Required equipment affidavit allows for “street legal” registration at no extra cost Action is needed now! Both Workgroup members and other stakeholders will be testifying before the House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday February 7, 2007 at 9:00am regarding House Bill 2443. Please try to attend this important meeting or contact the members of this committee as well as your respective state legislators and tell them that you fully support this legislation (phone calls are better than email). Legislators need to hear your voice on this issue. Without your help, Arizona off-highway vehicle recreational opportunities could be in jeopardy. Contact your legislators today. az raffle tag buck

The raffle tag holder (Bobby Boido) emailed me info and photos on his buck. He is registered in the forum but said for some reason he couldn't log in. Here is what he had to say about it: My wife Olga won the super raffle coues deer tag. She signed the tag over to me.I see that some guys are asking what happened on this hunt. I hunted a total of 23 days starting September 1,2006. We saw a total of 138 coues bucks with 5 going over 100 inches. This buck I took on January 20, 2007. My buck scores 118 inches with a 5 inch drop tine.I have hunted old Mexico and Arizona and I had never seen a drop tine buck. We also saw 24 herds of javalina, 10 coyotes and 4 bobcats. I did all my hunting in southern arizona with the help of some of the most fanatical coues deer hunters a guy can be friends with. My biggest help came from my cousin George Alcorta and my other cousin George Dalton.I wont name all the guys here, but one huge special thanks goes to Marty Hendricks for telling me about this buck. The forth time we went to look for this buck was the first time we saw him, right where he was supposed to be. I cant thank my wife enough for the tag and for putting up with me and my buddies. Almost every weekend we would meet at my house, making noise coming and going. To the guys and gals on this site, some one has to win, so give it a try!!

The Journey Into Mexico! (start to finish)

For circumference measurements, Jim is right when he says all bucks get four (if we are talking B&C rules). Jim I believe the correct way to score you dad's buck is to just measure from the g-2 to the end of the main beam and cut that in half. Then you take the circumference measurement at the halfway point. You use that same measurement twice. You don't divide the distance into thirds like you did and take two separate measurements. You just use that last measurement twice. Another example....if you had a spike buck and you wanted to score it, it's mass measurements would be taken halfway up the spike and written down four times. Regarding common base points, yes, you can divide them up, but only if the outline of the base is clearly a figure eight if you took a cross section of it. It looks to me like that is not the case on your Dad's buck so I think you are completely correct to count it as a G-2 with a non-typical point coming off it. And on your buck, it's hard to tell how to measure that "inside the spread" point. To be a normal point it has to come off the top of the main beam and not the side. But I think you are probably right that it's fairest and most likely that that point is a matched typical point. Amanda
