July 2007 Guess the Score Contest
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
No, you can't change your score once you guess. And Doug is right, if you really feel strongly about a particular score and it's already taken, go ahead and guess it anyway. We will break ties if necessary by having you guess net score. If you can avoid duplicating guesses and still feel you are putting in your best guess, then that is even better. There is a lot of room to avoid duplication by just moving up or down an eighth of an inch. Good luck to everyone and have fun!! here are the guesses to date: 110 5/8 110 7/8 111 3/8 111 6/8 112 2/8 112 5/8 113 113 3/8 113 5/8 113 6/8 114 3/8 114 5/8 114 6/8 115 3/8 115 5/8 116 116 5/8 116 7/8 117 117 1/8 117 3/8 117 3/8 117 5/8 117 6/8 117 7/8 118 1/8 118 3/8 118 4/8 118 4/8 118 5/8 118 6/8 118 7/8 119 119 1/8 119 3/8 119 5/8 119 6/8 119 7/8 119 7/8 120 120 1/8 120 1/8 120 2/8 120 3/8 120 5/8 120 6/8 120 7/8 121 1/8 121 4/8 121 5/8 121 6/8 121 7/8 122 122 1/8 122 2/8 122 5/8 122 5/8 122 6/8 123 1/8 123 4/8 123 6/8 124 124 1/8 124 6/8 125 1/8 126 1/8 127 1/8 128 129 3/8 130 -

July 2007 Guess the Score Contest
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
To help keep people from duplicating answers I am providing a list of what has already been guessed (good idea Gamehauler!). This should save you from having to page through all the guesses so far. Looks like only one set of duplicates so far, but I won't worry about it until after the contest ends. Then, if necessary we will have those that have duplicate answers that are in the top 5 guess net score. 110 5/8 111 3/8 112 2/8 113 3/8 113 5/8 114 3/8 114 5/8 115 3/8 115 5/8 116 5/8 116 7/8 117 1/8 117 5/8 117 6/8 117 7/8 118 3/8 118 5/8 118 6/8 118 7/8 119 119 1/8 119 5/8 119 6/8 119 7/8 120 1/8 120 1/8 120 2/8 120 5/8 120 7/8 121 1/8 121 6/8 122 122 2/8 122 6/8 123 6/8 124 126 1/8 127 1/8 -
another roadkill - 3 more deer dead
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Biology
I think the fawns were both bucks. That AGFD study is doing on highway collisions and elk should be a great one. If I remember right they are using cameras to sense large animals (ie elk) near the road and then that triggers warning signs for motorists to slow down. Sounds like a great project. Amanda -

another roadkill - 3 more deer dead
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Biology
I wish I would quit finding these too. They ruin my day and make me nauseous. I hope by posting this that people will drive a little slower in high density deer areas during high activity times (like dawn and dusk). I know most of these collisions are unavoidable, but perhaps a little more caution might save some deer. Doug, I am not going to start freezing them until AGFD tells me they want them. I have contacted several AGFD personnel and so far no one needs them. So the scavengers are getting full.....ugh. I am hoping some starving bear will find the carcass. We dragged it a ways off the road so they might be able to eat it without getting killed also. Amanda -
CouesFanatic, in answer to your question about saving the fawns, unless the doe is still alive when you find her, you don't have much chance of getting the fawns out before they die. Once the doe's blood stops flowing the fawns lose their oxygen supply. If you hit a doe and know it's fawning season, you might try and see if the fawns are still alive but the odds are slim that it would work out well. TJhunt - I kept the skulls of those fawns for educational presentations. I have a permit from AGFD that allows me to do that legally. Amanda

About a week ago there was a WT doe killed on the Catalina Highway. Knowing that it was almost time for the WT to be dropping fawns, I figured I would check her out and see how many fawns she had. Well, she had two perfect fawns that were almost full term. Seems so tragic that this poor doe made it through all the dry times this year and developed such perfect fawns only to lose her life to a vehicle collision as the rains started. Here are some photos. The fawns were about 15 inches long and my guess is she was only a week or two away from delivering them. A week later I saw a nice buck that ended up as road kill on the highway. I sure wish people would slow down driving up that highway and be more alert during the times deer are actively moving around up there. Amanda

FALL 2007-JAN 2008 COUES BUCK CONTEST
CouesWhitetail replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Thanks Doug for coordinating the contest again this year. I would like to request that those of you entering the contest make it as easy as you can on Doug by providing complete information as requested. He has to do a lot of organizing with all the people who enter and you can really help make things go smoothly by taking the time to make sure you included everything needed. Thanks! Looking forward to seeing how everyone does! Amanda -
WOW! You sure know how to knock people over with your shed pics Josh! And I agree with Gamehauler....can't believe you didn't with an orange shirt!! Amanda

The velbon sherpa is definitely more steady than the sprint pro. So if you expect to be in windy conditions frequently, then the sherpa is worth the extra size and weight. It's really not very heavy anyway. I love the one I have! Amanda

She looks pretty pleased! Congrats on a successful hunt! Amanda

Wow, that is just messed up. Sorry to hear that someone would do something like that. Hopefully someone will see the antlers and report it. I pinned this thread so more people might see it and keep an eye out. Amanda

Thanks for the report, that is great news! Hopefully the rain will keep coming. Got some big storms on the San Carlos and Globe recently. One on the rez had marble sized hail that was accumulating on the road about 1/2 to 1 inch deep! Wow, that was amazing. Heard the town of San Carlos got some major rain last night with some flooding possible. Globe had some flood damage about a week ago and we got light rain for several hours yesterday. Amanda

converting video files
CouesWhitetail replied to wklman's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Although I am not aware of a program that converts those formats you mentioned, I suggest you do a google search for a converter for those specific file formats. That's how I found some freeware that I needed to convert some video files between formats. Amanda -
