Saw A Sticker
CouesWhitetail replied to GameHauler's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
That was like Christmas! I got personalized lessons on that big rig and it was awesome! Thanks Jed, you rock! I think poor Jed got in trouble for letting me play in the middle of the work. here is a picture of me and Jed and another member of the site, Dan. I keep hoping I will get to go work with Jed again sometime building some wildlife waters. Jed if you see this, thanks again and I recently stopped by that catchment and it's filled to the rim with water and many MD tracks around there. Jed and I spent part of the evening pouring over some of his trail cam pics on his laptop at the ADA camp after working that day. Great to meet folks like that. Jed works full time (if I remember right) with a AGFD crew building water catchments all over the state. Amanda -
Prickly Pear season
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Yeah, I kinda suspected that. Don't you have some USFS land near you? Or maybe some private land? Maybe you can trade them some juice for permission to harvest on their land. Oh and by the way, I don't remember if I posted this or not, but there is another species of prickly pear, which I think may not be native to AZ (?) called Indian fig. I only see it as an ornamental. But they grow very large and have apple shaped fruit that doesn't get as red/purple as regular ppear. Anyway, the juice from that is really good! It's much sweeter, but it's also more muscelagenous (sp?). It's almost like a smoothie consistency by itself. It's got more a green color to the juice, but it's suprisingly good! We have a big one at our house and several businesses in town have them and let us pick the fruit. Amanda -

Prickly Pear season
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I would guess the state land dept. Let me know what you find out. The Arizona State Land Department is located at: 1616 W Adams St Phoenix, AZ 85007 For General Information Call: (602)542-4631 http://www.land.state.az.us/index.html I am guessing they may be less likely to allow harvest of ppear fruit, but I don't really know. Yes, I think you do need a permit. BUT, when I have called the USFS about it, they generally say something to the effect of "we don't have a permit specifically for that, but I don't see that it would be a problem, so go ahead" Better safe then sorry though, call your local USFS office and ask. Or find some private property that has a bunch (like a ranch or land slated for development and ask permission from them. We have a bunch in our yard and then also a bunch of neighbors that have them. Amanda -

Hi All, I have asked Coosefan to be a moderator in the forum and he has graciously accepted. I think he will do an outstanding job helping to keep this place a positive and informative site for hunters. Welcome Coosefan! Amanda P.S. For those wondering, Ernesto decided he didn't want to be a part of the forum anymore after that big immigration blow-up a few weeks back. -
Lunar Eclipse tonight
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
here are a few pics of it. I saw it as it went into total eclipse and then watched it recede. Anyone else take some pics? I took them off several different optics (my video cam, my swaro 15's and my zeiss spotting scope). Amanda -

July 2007 Guess the Score Contest
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
I made a mistake and didn't enter in the guesses on page 7, so I have gone back and entered those and recalculated who the winners were. Everything is pretty much the same except it added two more winners for third place. So I will add two more prizes for that. I updated the results on the results page. Noel Arnold and azshtr are the two new third place winners. So please email me with your names and addresses so I can get a prize out to you. Sorry for the mistake! RAC, I am still waiting to receive your guess on net score to break the tie for 1st place. Bownut already sent his in...thank you bownut. Amanda -

#%$*&# Camera thief's strike for the 3rd time
CouesWhitetail replied to Big Browns's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I can understand your feeling violated and being angry, but I think you are better off hunting that spot you have put so much time into. Heck if you are in there hunting, you might even find the person who stole your camera. Give yourself some time to make your decision when you are not so angry about it. The only way I know of to eliminate a salt lick is to dig up all the dirt around it so you are taking all the salt that has leached into the ground. Amanda -

Choice Of Words
CouesWhitetail replied to GameHauler's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Seems to me harvest is perfectly acceptable usage when referring to taking game. Since there is so much debate about it, I figured I would check the definition of the word when used as a verb. From Webster's dictionary online: Main Entry: 2harvest Function: verb transitive verb 1 a : to gather in (a crop) : REAP b : to gather, catch, hunt, or kill (as salmon, oysters, or deer) for human use, sport, or population control c : to remove or extract (as living cells, tissues, or organs) from culture or from a living or recently deceased body especially for transplanting 2 a : to accumulate a store of <has now harvested this new generation's scholarly labors -- M. J. Wiener> b : to win by achievement <the team harvested several awards> And from the American Heritage Dictionary online: harvest v.tr. To gather (a crop). To take or kill (fish or deer, for example) for food, sport, or population control. To extract from a culture or a living or recently deceased body, especially for transplantation: harvested bone marrow. To gather a crop from. To receive (the benefits or consequences of an action). See synonyms at reap. -
I created a new forum for book reviews (look at bottom of forum list). I figure Tony can fill it all by himself! I would be real interested to see what books people recommend. Amanda

Choice Of Words
CouesWhitetail replied to GameHauler's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Here is another choice of words to discuss. I was teaching the hunting class at BOW this past weekend and someone suggested that I not use the word "weapon" when describing a firearm used for hunting. They said weapon carries along with it the connotation of war and murder. They suggested weapons are used to kill people and firearms are for hunting. I never thought of that kind of word choice before. Seems a bit of semantics to me, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to be sensitive to how we are perceived when talking about hunting. Amanda
