AGFD looking for help to solve a deer poaching
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Information needed to solve deer poaching News Media Aug 30, 2007 FLAGSTAFF -- The Arizona Game and Fish Department is asking for the public's help in finding a poacher that killed a mule deer doe on Aug. 24 or 25, along Lake Mary Road south of Mormon Lake. The poaching occurred about one mile south of the Kinnikinick Lake turnoff near milepost 319. The deer was shot with a high caliber rifle and left in the field to waste. A field investigation found that the female deer had been nursing newborn fawns. The poaching took place during the opening weekend of archery deer season and probably occurred in the evening of the 24th or the early morning hours of the 25th. "This is a blatant example of poachers' disrespect for wildlife, and the laws and seasons that are established to protect our wildlife resources," said Larry Phoenix, Game and Fish field supervisor. "We are asking the public to help us catch the poacher. If you were in the area recently, please think back about anything you might have seen or heard, or any conversations you might have had. Maybe someone doesn't realize he or she has the key to solving this case. Poaching of wildlife is considered a major loss for the residents of Arizona and our wildlife resources." Anyone with information about this poaching incident can call the department's Operation Game Thief hotline toll free at (800) 352-0700. Callers may be eligible for a reward up to $250 in this case. All calls may remain confidential upon request. -
Beautiful! Isn't it great when hardwork pays off? Amanda

My guess is bucks and does have the same ability to smell human scent, but I think does have less to fear from it (since they are generally not hunted), so perhaps they spend less energy fleeing from it since it's not as much of a threat to them. Amanda

Glad you are enjoying the shirts Matthew and Mike. Thanks for the reports. I just ordered some of a new design today. Hopefully they will make them look good. It's Rembrant's rendering of Clay Goldman's 154 4/8 inch Non-Typical (gross score), 148 6/8 net. I am hoping we can get a series of big bucks on some shirts. I ordered these shirts in a light gold color and also a "serene green". Should look good. Hope you guys like it. I will post again when they come in. Should be a week or two. Thanks to Clay for letting us use his buck and to Rembrant for his wonderful artwork! http://www.customink.com/cink/r.jsp?E=aman...p;cm_ite=design Amanda -

Preferred vegetation to hunt coues in?

My favorite are oak-juniper-grassland areas. My least favorite is probably chaparral (e.g., manzanita thickets). Amanda -

If you can't wait to hear Jim speak, he is giving the same talk at the AZ Deer Association Hunter Clinic on Sept 11 in PHX. Go to http://www.azdeer.org for more info on the clinic. Amanda -
Nice sheep! Congrats! Looks like some rough country! Amanda

It wasn't quite that big, the biggest g-2 was "only" 9 5/8, but it was big. Green score was around 120 if I remember right. I probably forgot to post it in the Mexico section, but you can find pics in the hunt story I wrote up last year about our hunt. And it's in the latest Coues Deer Celebration videos. That pic I used there in that video is the one that I think shows it as similar to this buck. But this one looks larger and has the kicker on it. I didn't add up the score on this Mexico buck, just went with my gut. So I could be way off Amanda

Around 123-125 would be my guess. It reminds me a lot of the one my friend Beth got last year in Mexico. Wow. that is a GREAT buck. Geez.... Amanda

WOW Kade!! That is awesome. You are a hunting machine! Way to go! Amanda

Congratulations! That's great. Looks like some awesome country! Amanda

azpackhorse, nice pics. That one of the turtle looks to be a male (note the red eye) ornate box turtle, which have a very restricted range in AZ. Would you mind PM'ing me about that sighting location? UofA and AGFD have been trying to collect data on distribution of these turtles. I spent a summer down in Sulphur Springs Valley studying these turtles. Amanda -

Thanks Tony. Here is another design using Rembrant's pen and ink of Clay Goldman's buck. http://www.customink.com/cink/r.jsp?E=aman...p;cm_ite=design I am still trying to find out from the printer if they can make it look good or not. They have problem getting the subtle shading on things right. Apparently the solid shading on the deer on the front is much easier than the stippling that is in the drawing on the back. Which is why Bill Quimby's circular logo works well, but some of his other full color, more detailed ones don't. Amanda -
Alright. I have seen enough. - Im sold.
