    Whats the Weirdest?

Well, I assume it was a family group. Barn owls can have up to about 12 young, although 4-7 is more common. Or possibly two family groups haning around together. Neat sighting.....I haven't ever seen anything like that.....don't suppose you had a camera with you? The other question would be if you are sure they were barn owls and not burrowing owls? Since you said there were trees around, I assume you were in a drainage going through a forest rather than the more open habitat that burrowing owls use. But burrowing owls have large broods and can be particularly abundant in one spot like that. Amanda

    Has anyone else noticed?

It's at 26 right now....I wish we could maintain a sub-25 rating, but that's tough to crack. I think 25 is the highest we have been? Anyone remember a better ranking? Amanda

    New Mexico Junior Elk Success

I had a great time camping and hunting with Stan, Erik, and Terry. We seemed to be charmed on that hunt from the moment we got there (finding a wonderful campsite exactly where we wanted to be), to the hunt (having a nice trail down into the canyon and the bugling bulls), to the kill (being able to track and get more shots at that bull despite it being extremely thick forest), to getting the elk out and back to camp (got some amazingly generous help from some guys and young boys with quads), to the rain holding off until we were done cutting up the elk. It really was a great trip. Mild weather, nice campfire, and all with moonlight backlighting some amazing looking storm clouds with lightning all around us. The aspens were mostly turned gold and the whole forest had that great fall smell that I really enjoy. Thanks for letting me tag along Stan! I am glad I could help out! Amanda

    Water

I think Tony and the others are correct. Some of the research shows deer coming to water everyday in hot summer and less often in winter months. Pregnant does can come to water several times a day. The need for water depends on the environment (temp, humidity) and water available in forage and the condition of the deer (such as if they are pregnant or lactating). Amanda

    Elk Hunt

Nice bull! and thanks for sharing the story and all those photos. Yes, that is a golden eagle. Looks like an adult to me since I can't see any white on the tail. Must have been great seeing all that game and getting close to shooting that coues buck. did you pack that elk out by yourself?? That's a workout! Congratulations! Amanda

    Coues calender

Yes, it's a nice idea. I have thought about doing a contest to get a calendar done like AGFD does (only ours would be Coues specific). I would need someone to organize it though (maybe Doug/Red Rabbit since he's a very good photographer and organizer---- interested Doug?). Plus most of the guys on this site don't take photos on high enough resolution settings to make a good print for a calendar. They need to be large enough so that if they are blown up to 8x10 or larger that they are still at least 300 dpi or they won't look very good printed. Amanda

  22. Sorry to hear it's postponed, but that obviously seems to be the best option. Hopefully after most of the hunting seasons are over we can find a date when more folks can attend. I sure appreciate your organizing this and I look forward to it when it does finally happen. Amanda
