more on Calif. condor issue
CouesWhitetail replied to billrquimby's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Yes, I saw the article. (It wasn't really so much about the lead ban in CA and the SCI opposition to it, it was more about the voluntary lead reduction efforts by hunters and AGFD up on the Kaibab). Glad to hear that they feel they are getting 80-85% compliance. I am not sure why we can't get closer to 100% though. It still irritates me that I saw a hunter on the Kaibab leave a gut pile out there after having shot up the liver with a lead bullet. He had driven his truck right to the dead deer, had a bag that AGFD had given him for the gut pile, and yet still chose to leave the gut pile behind. He said he would go get the gut pile later, but when it became obvious he wasn't going to and when I saw a condor near the carcass, I went with some friends and picked it up ourselves, but there had already been a condor on it and the liver was gone. AGFD even offered a chance for a $500 Cabela's gift certificate if you brought in a gut pile. So how much easier can AGFD make it for voluntary compliance? They give you free non-lead ammunition and if you don't use that, they give a bag to carry the gut pile out in and also a chance to win a bunch of stuff if you turn in the gut pile. And if you happen to be too far into the woods to feel like packing a gut pile out, all you have to do is bury it. Amanda -
Where did the term "Toad" come from?

Good one Bill! And I am with Coosefan....I always enjoy Josh's crazy words. Makes you wonder how his brain works to come up with those! hehehehe Amanda -
Hey, instead of waterproof hunting boots, you can go with bread bags over your feet and then stuffed into your shoes. That's what we did in Mexico one year! hehehe, it will match your hefty bag ensemble. I have the cabela's MT050 and found it works quite well. I did like Brian did and went out during and after a snowstorm and layed around in it to see if it worked. Kept me nice and warm and dry. But I do find them to be bigger than I like to carry around in my pack. So they tend to stay at camp more often than if I had some lighter rain gear. Amanda

Nice pics! But please resize pics before you post them. Several of those are over 1 MB, no need for them to be over a few hundred KB. Amanda -

Ouch Bill, you sure have a grudge against those poor old sheep! I can't really argue with you there, but I still think they are amazing the way they move in that steep country! Amanda

I haven't done much rattling, but buckgrunts sure work during the peak of the rut. I can think of several instances in Mexico when we had great luck with calling. One buck was called back across a canyon after it had spooked and run across the canyon away from us. Here is a link to some video of him. Not great video due to light fading and not having it on a tripod. When you first see the buck he is moving fast away from us. Then after awhile, he starts coming back toward us at a fast trot. I ran out of tape and it got dark or I would have gotten more video of him coming back. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/video_clips/...ck%20stable.wmv And here is another buck that we called into about 10 yards. We first saw him walking down a ridge away from us, maybe 100-200 yards away. We set up under an oak tree and tried calling with a buck grunt and doe bleat call. The buck came back to within 10-20 yards very quickly. He is a nice buck, maybe 101-103 inches (gross). If you look carefully as he is leaving you can see an interesting, short, non-typical point between his eyeguard and 2nd tine on his right antler. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/video_clips/...0in%20close.wmv And there was another buck that we called in after hearing bucks fighting like mad beneath us and not being able to see them due to the thick brush. A few buck grunts and doe bleats brought him in running and into about 5 yards or so. I had my gun up and ready to shoot, so I didn't get any video of him, but I sure wish I could have! That was awesome! I think the bucks had only been less than 100 yards away when we decided to try and call them in. Amanda

Hi All, Many of you know that I lost my beloved dog about 10 months ago. We have finally decided the time was right to get another dog to join the family and to be a friend to our other dog Molly. Someone offered us this golden retriever and we decided to take her. Apparently she is a purebred but somehow flunked hunting school.... Oh well, we don't mind. She seems very smart to us, so I think she will be a great dog. Anyway, she came with the name Baby Ruth because her parents and lineage are named after other types of candy. We aren't so fond of calling her that, so I am looking for a new name. We would kind of like to give her a name with some meaning that matches her personality, but of course we only just got her today, so we don't know her all that well. So far she has impressed us as being VERY quiet. She hasn't made a noise other than panting after running around. Her footsteps are silent and she doesn't whine or bark. Our other dog was barking and making all kinds of noise trying to get her to play, but the new dog is quiet! Anyone know a good name that means "quiet one" or something like that? Or perhaps we could name her after the beautiful color that she is. She is a gorgeous dog and about 10 months old. (interesting...I just realized this dog was born about the same time as my old dog died). here are a couple pics of her (sorry, they aren't the best, but it's raining and not the best day for pics). If you end up posting a name that I decide to use, I will send you a free CouesWhitetail.com tshirt! So what do you think she should be named? here is a link to the page with the tshirts in case you haven't seen them yet: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/tshirts.htm Amanda

hey casey, does the article give a good plug to CouesWhitetail.com? I hope so. By the way, Western Hunter is interested in doing an article about the results of our Coues Buck contest. I think he is hoping to cover the hunt stories of several of the winners. Should be interesting. Amanda -

CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Ok, the random number was 66. So post number 66 in this thread wins a tshirt. That person would be AZP&Y, so if you can email me which tshirt you want (size, design, color) and also name and address, then I can get a shirt out to you. shirts on this page: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/tshirts.htm Amanda -
Help me name my new dog!
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Well, I think we have finally settled on a name. Unfortunately, it's not a name anyone here suggested.....But I very much appreciate all the input. You guys came up with lots of fine names! I think we are going to call her Julie Hanna. Julie was the first name we called her that really seemed to fit. And then a friend of mine suggested Hanna and I really liked that one. So she was Hanna for a day or so, then we kept going back to Julie. So for a long name she will be Julie Hanna and for most of the time she will be Julie. And my husband already has some nicknames for her. She has a lot of loose skin on her jaw and she drools alot when she drinks. So he calls her Jowly Julie or Drooly Julie. Not the nicest names, but it's all in fun. Julie means soft, downy and youthful. Hanna means grace and favored. Since she is so amazingly soft to pet and she walks gracefully and quietly, we thought it worked well. I really do appreciate all the help! I am sorry the name didn't come from all your suggestions. And I would still like to give out a shirt, so maybe what I will do is pick a random number (from a random number table in my stats book) and give a tshirt to the person who made that numbered guess. Sound ok? Amanda -
Excellent!! What a neat hunt! Amanda

Call Ron Sega. I hear very good things about his gunsmithing abilities. And please make sure you heard about him here on CouesWhitetail.com. If you go to his store, you can also see the leupold scope and range finder that he and Leupold are donating to our Coues Buck Contest. Amanda here is the text of the link that redrabbit posted above. Hi All, When we announced the Coues buck contest and prizes, I mentioned that Ron Sega of AZ Guns Etc in Chandler was making a donation to the contest (Leupold rifle scope and range finder). In addition to that, he was offering all CouesWhitetail.com members a 12% discount on all accessories as well as $25 off any guns purchased at his store. Has anyone taking a trip to his store? What did you think? Did you get anything? I would really like to see some members benefitting from this offer and also to see Ron get some business after making such a generous donation to the contest. Ron provides some great service with customizing guns as well as just about anything you need for your guns. Ron has been in business for 20 years in Chandler, AZ (near Alma School and Warner). Go visit his store and see what he can do for you! give him a call, he is easy to talk to. 480-963-4311 Or visit his website: http://www.azgunsetc.net/home_.html I think he must have more stuff in his store than is listed on his website, so if you don't see what you want online, give him a call and see if he has it in stock or can get it for you.
