FYI.... On sheep any difference in horn length does not count as a deduction on the net score.... Deductions are only applied to differences in mass measurements. Congrats on a Fabulous Ram!! It was quite good fortune that he lived till Dec. 1st! A ram of a lifetime, Congrats & Enjoy! CnS CnS is correct on the scoring issue. No deductions for diff in horn length. Just deductions for differences in mass measurements. Amanda

Anyone else have this happen?!
CouesWhitetail replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Well now...why didn't you go arrow one of those deer? Hopefully you at least attempted a stalk....is there a story? Amanda -
Javelinahunter.com is the website that planted the seed in my brain for this website It's a neat site. Amanda

Hey guys, please respect our current sponsors by not giving direct links or contact information for outfitters that are not official sponsors of this site. Those are the rules agreed to when you registered for the forum. I have edited post to remove direct links and phone numbers. If you really feel the need to contact this outfitter, it's easy enough to find them on the web. Thanks for your cooperation with this. Rockdog, I specifically asked you earlier today to not post the web address or phone number and you did so. Not a good way to start out in this forum. Amanda

Nice bucks! Glad you had a great time. I wish you had invited me along to help out!! that would have been fun! I didn't know you were going by yourself. Congrats to you! How far south were you? Amanda

WoW!!! That is an awesome ram!! Amazing. Congrats to all involved! Amanda

Congratulations and thanks for all the pics and the story. That was fun to read. Man, that badlands 2200 orange flap is going to smell bad for months after rubbing on that gland for your whole hike back!! I hope it cleans up well! Amanda

Congratulations Troy!! You sure have had some fun times hunting out of that blind this season! Nice job! Save that javelina skull, it makes a neat keepsake and they are one of the most interesting skulls there is. Try not to boil it to clean it because javelina skulls tend to get greasy over time if you do that. You can just remove as much meat as you can and then soak it in a bucket of water for several weeks and it will clean up really nicely (amount of time it takes to clean depends on temperature, the warmer the faster it rots the flesh off). But it will come out as clean as if you did it with beetles. Amanda

Coues Quality Differences in North vs South Sonora
CouesWhitetail replied to Genesis's topic in Coues Biology
good question. Seems to me most of the monster bucks (like 140+) are coming from the northern part of sonoran, not too far south of the border. But perhaps more people are hunting those areas since they are closer to the border so more chance that eventually someone will whack a monster. Amanda -
I have hunted both and I would say that Mexico has bigger bucks on average and depending on the ranch, a higher density of deer. But to answer whether it's worth the extra money and headache is a tough call. Depends on what you want. I LOVE the San Carlos and was fortunate enough to go along with a friend on a late coues hunt there a couple weeks ago. He ended up killing a 110 inch buck and we saw lots of deer and not a single other hunter. That's why I love it out there. It has excellent hunting and low density of hunters. But I think it's easier to find bucks that are over 110 in Mexico. So, I guess I would think about what you are looking for. How big a buck will you be happy with? If you kill a 110 on the San Carlos and spend $2000 less on the hunt will you be happier than if you spend $4000 in Mexico and kill a 120? Tough call! I say find a way to make more money and do both!!! There is a whole other cultural experience to the hunt in Mexico that I enjoy. And although you are certainly in another culture on the reservation, generally you are just with your hunting friends and don't see many apaches out there during the season. So it's not like in Mexico where you are staying in a ranch house with Mexicans and getting a taste of their way of life. Amanda PS. What would be really awesome would be if the White Mtn Apache Reservation let nonmembers hunt Coues deer like San Carlos does. There seem to be more brutes up there on the WMAT rez.

First timer hunting mexico
CouesWhitetail replied to loco4coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
I think the issue with the cape is that they are worried about ticks and perhaps other pests crossing the border on the cape. I consider that there are three ways to get a cape across the border. 1 The standard recommendation is to freeze the cape for 24hrs before crossing. They say the cape must be frozen solid. 2. However, you can also get across the border with a green, unsalted, unfrozen cape if you take the cape directly to a USDA approved taxidermist. That taxidermist has a form to give you before you enter Mexico so that you can get through the entry port on the way back. The taxidermist then treats the cape to eliminate ticks. If you know which taxidermist you will be using, ask them if they have a form and that may make it real easy for you to cross. 3. You can have an approved person in mexico treat the cape with a pesticide and then he signs a certification form to show it's been treated. I have done this before through the outfitter I was hunting with. He had the contact and got the cape treated. Not sure what to say about your friend who got through with just a salted cape. Maybe that's a 4th method that is ok? Again, the issue is with ticks. If they search the cape and find a tick, then you don't get to keep it. Amanda -
WOW!! Awesome! Amanda

Monster Archery Buck *UPDATED*
CouesWhitetail replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I think we all want to come visit that buck!! Who doesn't love droptines!? I have been thinking for a while now that we ought to have some CW.com get together where people can bring their trophies to display. I think it would be a great time. Just have to get a place big enough for people to hang their trophies if they are already mounted. Anyone else like that idea and have a suggestion of a location for it? Amanda -
Leave No Child Inside photo contest
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Not sure if they want hunting photos since it says the theme is to show kids enjoying state, city and national parks, but I bet you guys have some great pics of your kids playing outside in parks. Read the press release and call the phone number for more info. Amanda http://www.pr.state.az.us/pressrelease/07a...007_photos.html ARIZONA STATE PARKS For Immediate Release Managing and conserving Arizona's natural, cultural and recreational resources for the benefit of the people, both in our Parks and through our Partnerships. FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: Ellen Bilbrey at (602) 542-1996 or (602) 228- 8518, or Monica Enriquez at (602) 542-6997? both at pio at azstateparks.gov ********** Submit Photos for Arizona Parks and Recreation Association's Leave No Child Inside Photo Contest (Phoenix, Arizona - December 10, 2007) - Photos of nature and children enjoying outdoor environments are being sought for Arizona Parks and Recreation's "Leave No Child Inside" photo contest. Start taking pictures today as entries must be postmarked by May 1, 2008! The purpose of the "Leave No Child Inside" theme is to encourage parents to take their children to National, State, County and City parks to enjoy nature and recreate in Arizona's natural areas. According to Richard Louv's testimony to the Department of the Interior in February, "In just a few decades, the way children understand and experience their neighborhoods and the natural world has changed radically. Even as children become more aware of global threats to the environment, their physical contact, their intimacy with nature, is fading." Louv said, "Only 6 percent of children from nine to thirteen-years-old play outside on their own. Research indicates there is a dramatic decline in outdoor activities such as swimming and fishing and camping is down. Even bike riding is down 31 percent since 1995. In San Diego researchers have found that 90 percent of inner-city kids do not know how to swim and 34 percent have never been to the beach." Louv goes on to explain that urban and even rural parents cite reasons such as disappearing natural areas, competition from electronics, dangerous traffic, homework and other pressures. Stranger-danger is also a key factor. Of course the physical benefits of being in an outdoor environment for children are obvious, but other benefits are subtle, such as the development of cognitive functioning. The California Department of Education found that students in outdoor science programs improved their science testing scores by 27 percent. But another danger that conservationists see is that since 1970, undergraduate enrollment in conservation and natural resource programs fell by half according to a professor at Utah State's College of Natural Resources. Idealistic, outdoor-oriented young adults used to be drawn to government careers in conservation, but that trend is fading and the brain drain of boomers and enthusiasm for protection of the environment will drain away. You can help re-energize the effort to get children outdoors by participating in this photo contest! Prizes will be awarded for the best photos. Categories for photos include Urban Experience, Leave No Inner Child Inside, Kids and Critters and Most Unique Experience. Photos will be displayed at the 2008 Arizona Parks and Recreation Conference at the Camelback Inn in August 2008. Submitted photographs must be 4x6 and may be either color or black and white. For details on the photo contest visit www.azpra.org or call (602) 335-1962. Thanks for the post Redbeard, that was really fun to read. Love the.... "I'd say, "Don't move they're right there looking at us." then turn around and Phoebe would be jumping on and off a boulder arms swinging wildly right behind me. Those pigs must have thought, "Surely those people are not hunting."" I can really picture that one. That's so funny!! Congratulations and I agree, you must be the greatest javelina guide in the world!!! Amanda

Wow, great job Andy and Josh!! That's so cool! Great buck! Post some more pics so we can get a better idea for guessing him. I think Gino is probably pretty close with his 114 guess.
