Outdoorsmans joins as a sponsor!
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I am very pleased to announce that Outdoorsmans from Phoenix has just signed on as an official sponsor of this site. Outdoorsmans offers a great variety of products for hunting. They have binoculars, spotting scopes, tripods, backpacks, and much more. And one of the nice things about their store is you can go there and compare products side by side. For example, you can try out different brands of binoculars mounted on tripods and see which you like best. visit their website to see what they offer and for directions to their store in Phoenix. Wow, the things you guys wonder about.....now I can never look at one of those signs the same again. You guys crack me up!! Amanda

Yes, I can look into it. I was thinking of doing some of the next design in long sleeve. How many of you would like to see some long sleeve shirts available? Amanda

Great finds Josh!!! Hey, anyone who wants a GRONG orange CW.com tshirt can order one here: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/tshirts.htm Amanda

I use both. If I am just hunting, then I use the JW head. If I am videotaping and hunting, I use the bogen 701rc2. It's a very smooth head but it's bulkier than Jim's. Amanda

I would agree with that. Amanda

Wow, that's cool. Thanks for the info. I thought it ran to midnight and then you needed another. Wonder when they changed it. Amanda

Glad to hear you had a great experience with Duwane. Back when I first started this website and the hunt contest, Duwane offered a prize of glassing lessons to a group of winners. It was really neat and they loved it. Duwane has been a long time supporter of CouesWhitetail.com and you can visit his website for his contact info: http://www.arizonabiggamehunting.com/ Amanda

A nature lovin hippie once told me....
CouesWhitetail replied to Lance's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I have a vegetarian friend who isn't against hunting and asks me for game meat for her family so they can get high quality protein. I think she is more against the whole commercial production of farm animals more than the killing of something like a deer to eat. I guess she sees that as more natural. Amanda -

Here is the link to that lightning/storm video I made last year. You can practically smell the rain coming! http://www.coueswhitetail.com/video_clips/lightning_1.wmv And a few pics: teaching Geocaching class in the rain a few months ago: Some moisture floating in the Catalinas: -
Hi All, Last season I had a ranch owner call me asking for advice on how to setup a coues deer hunting program on his ranch. We finally were able to schedule a time when both of us could be at the ranch and I went down for a visit. The ranch is called the Cerro Colorado and has some interesting history to it. Apparently there used to be a very strong hunting program there in the 80's which is the time their grandfather was running it. The grandfather also spent time entertaining dignitaries including Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Well the grandfather died and left it to his daughter and others to run. None of them were very interested in the hunting end and so the business suffered. The family has been debating whether to just sell the ranch or try and make a go of it. One of the grandsons is motivated to keep the ranch in the family and is trying to get everyone on board on the need to get the ranch to make some money through various options including hunting. So anyway, they are getting setup to offer some coues hunts. I went down and spent three very enjoyable days on the ranch and glassed up one buck that was probably somewhere between 110-118. It was far away and moving fast so it was tough to pin down a score, but it was a very nice buck. It was wide and tall and had a smaller buck with him. Those were the only bucks I saw, but we saw many does also. Here are some pics of the ranch. The facilities are very nice. The rooms of the main house are very comfortable and are heated by a fireplace in each room. They also have several buildings next to the main house with nice rooms and also full bathrooms and fireplaces. They also have satellite TV and internet connections at the ranch. The other interesting feature of this ranch is that the grandfather was interested in having non-native species, many of them from Africa. So they built an enclosure that houses many species (I think there are 11 now, used to be several more including giraffe and hippo). Apparently they got the animals from the San Diego Zoo many years ago. Some of those include: wildebeest: buffalo: water buffalo: Argentine ponies: zebra: red deer: I also found a red deer skeleton in the enclosure and I never realized how different their teeth are from elk. Oh and here is an Addax. It's one I didn't see during a drive through the enclosure, but Dan Bishop got pics and emailed them to me. Gorgeous animals!

A friend asked me to post this: There will be a Clean Up this Saturday, April 5th at 6:00AM in Redington Pass. The clean up will take place on the 3 major shooting areas at milepost 6 and then whatever we can do after that. Any and all help will greatly be appreciated. Please pass the word around. The forest service is the main contact on this cleanup. You can contact the forest service in Tucson, probably Sabino Canyon visitor center. Alternatively, you can contact Matt Walton with Game and Fish as well at 520-388-4468. As far as directions, from Tucson you need to go east on Tanque verde road until it turns into Redington Rd. Then the pavement will turn into dirt. Just follow the road for 6 miles until you see us or see milepost 6. From Kearney or Globe, you can take the back way through San Maneul and take Redington Rd all the way back toward Tucson. It's a lengthy drive that way though. I don't have a map, but you might be able to google it or mapquest it some how. It's easy to find.

Another neat opportunity in Mexico!
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
Oh, I almost forgot, here is a pic of some locked antlers that were on the wall. I didn't notice them until the morning we were leaving or I would have scored them. One buck looked to be well over 105. Oh and this ranch is easy to get to. It's only about an hour drive south of Douglas! You can go through Douglas or Naco checkpoints. here are photos of some nice murals at the Naco checkpoint as we were coming back into the US -

The family of the ranch treated us to some great food and hospitality. One afternoon they took us to a place they call the sanctuary. It's a place with large sycamores and a spring and they have added some roman-looking columns to make some atmosphere for parties. They served all kinds of drinks and snacks (herbed tomatoes, fancy cheese, etc) and grilled up some carne asada for wonderful lunch. It was a wonderful afternoon. Dan Bishop and his wife Lisa were able to come join us for the afternoon. Dan runs Cola Blanca outfitters, a long-standing sponsor of CW.com and is the outfitter that will be doing the hunts for this ranch. some pics at the sanctuary: here is a pic of Dan and Lisa on some horses at the sanctuary. Several of the guests rode horses back from the sanctuary and here they are against the sunset: If you are interested in hunting on this ranch, please contact Dan Bishop and ask him about the opportunities there. They are trying to work in some hunting of the exotics with some of the coues hunts, so this could be a very interesting opportunity. Some of the other interesting species they have that I didn't get a photo of are barbary sheep (auodad) and addax. Dan will probably be charging a premium to hunt this ranch since the facilities are so nice, and I think he may already have most of the tags sold, so if you are interested...call or email him soon! dan@colablancaoutfitters.com http://www.colablancaoutfitters.com And you should check out the website for the ranch. You can see more photos there and read more about it. http://www.cerrocolorado.com.mx Thank you very much to Antonio Yturbe for the invitation to come to the ranch and for hosting us there for several days. Antonio and his mother and brothers all speak English and are easy to talk to. In addition to having hunting on the ranch, they would also like to have people spend their vacations there. So if you have a large family or group of people that want a very nice place to visit, plan a vacation on the Cerro Colorado! Amanda -

I guess I always assumed it was both the shooter and the animal just for the safety of those that might be in the houses. People could easily be out working or walking the area around the house. Tony is there a time when you thought about taking an animal within a 1/4 mile of an occupied house? Just wondering if you have a specific example in mind. Amanda -
Very nice Tony!! Amanda

Hi All, Went out with our church for a picnic on Easter and saw lots of wild flowers on the south side of the pinals. We stayed overnight at the ranch of a friend and then in the morning took a trip with them to look at some petroglyphs and wild flowers. Wow, what an amazing site! Pictures don't do the flowers justice. It was absolutely stunning! here is a rather weak attempt at capturing a panorama of the amazing amount of flowers on miles of ridges. And here are some closeups: The ranch owner bought this swiss army vehicle for the ranch and we were able to use it to get up to an area with petroglyphs and flowers. Neat ride! This thing is built to go anywhere! And here are some of the petroglyphs: There were some deep pools in the creek below the petroglyphs and the dogs went swimming. And finally, as we were hiking up to the petroglyphs we spooked a couple whitetail. These aren't great pics, but you might be able to play the find the deer game with them. This a bit of a hard one and the photo has two deer in it: One deer in this pic: And this one should be the easiest. There is one leaping WT in this pic.

NRS, not sure what trees you are talking about? The area I was in the trees were not dead. I was on the lower south side of the pinals. Pine trees are located higher up in the pinals and some of that area did burn awhile back. Amanda
