Enjoy and post the pics when you get back! Amanda

Sdrhunter, I tried to find that out, and in general they thought they were in good condition but they didn't have the data with them from last year's rump fat measurements and no one seemed to know if the measurements they got this year were particularly good or not. The deer seemed in good condition to me. But I don't have the data to compare to last year. I guess I expected them to be in exceptional condition this year, not sure they really were though. I will be interested to see what the data says. Most does were carrying twins, but I think that was true last year as well. Amanda

Birthdays!!!
CouesWhitetail replied to azcouesandelk's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
That's quite a list of some great people having b-days. Happy birthday to you all! Amanda -
Keith is correct. The enclosure was predator free. Over the years I think they had a bear climb in, but they got it out. The predation by lions was on fawns outside the enclosure. The fenced area is not closed now. They opened it last year. Amanda

Not going to give us anymore details about the book? Amanda

As far as a writeup about the research, I don't have a link to any. I know AGFD wrote up an article that I think was in AZ Wildlife Views many months ago. I can't find it on their website. Maybe someone here has a copy of it? The main research analysis isn't done yet and a peer-reviewed research publication will probably be 18-24 months away. I didn't get a complete breakdown of the mortality causes, but I think many were killed by lions and some died of malnutrition. Amanda

Rainy, windy and cold in Globe since about 0830 this morning. We even are having a fire in the fireplace! Nice! Gotta love this cool spring we are having. Amanda

All mulies. And yes, it was a tough day in the life of those deer. Many of the deer have been handled several times over the years. On the one hand they had it easy for years living without predators in the enclosure and then on the other hand they have been poked and prodded many times. Amanda

Love that pic! Three generations! Awesome and all wearing hats that support conservation groups! Gonna post any other pics from Golden Pond? I saw one on Bryan's phone that he got during the ADA meeting the other night. Looked like a nice fish! Amanda

Sorry....I guess i better jump on it and find out. I just always figured it was plate action underneath that pushed the ridges up. Amanda

All those mtns between wklman and Globe are some of my favorites. I am always amazed at the amount of force it must have taken to bend those lines of rock in some areas. I don't have the info as to how it all happened, but would love to know. Amanda

here are some links to some reviews: http://www.gpsmagazine.com/2008/01/spot_sa...erso.php?page=4 http://www.rei.com/product/766529?cm_mmc=p...CFQqLggodSj2kCQ I like the idea of the unit, but have decided not to get one based on reviews I have read. I think there is lots of room for improvement and I suspect they will within a year or two put out a much improved unit. So it might be worth waiting. If you want some safety, there are items called personal locator beacons that cost more upfront, but they have a longer battery life, have no annual costs and apparently work on a more reliable rescue network (based on some reviews I read). Just search google for Personal locator beacon and you can read up on them. Lots of people have had issues with the SPOT units not getting good reception and many people have complained about the unit not giving you anyway to know if the message you sent actually made it through. And people have complained that you can't receive any messages which would be nice. Imagine if you wanted to email your hunting buddy a place to meet and then you could get a confirmation from him that he would be there at whatever time. That would be nice. But there is no LCD panel to diplay any information like confirming your message was sent or reading a received message. Amanda

Fun with Trail Cam Pics and Video!
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Hi All, I have a friend who has a cabin on mt lemmon and he isn't a hunter but has been putting salt out for deer for years so he can enjoy watching them. He had never heard of a trail camera, so when I told him about them he got interested and asked me to put up a camera. So I did and got lots of pic and video from Aug to mid-Oct. Just for fun I strung the images and video together, sped them up and set them to music. here is the link to a short version that I posted recently in another thread. This one covers four days at the salt lick. It contains 182 images. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/video_clips/...nian_market.wmv and then Gamehauler said he liked that one but it was too short, so I went back and added in what I had from Aug to Oct. It's fun stuff. One doe has twins initially, but shows up later with only one. There are several bucks and you can see them after they freshly shed their velvet. You can also see that the deer eat the dirt by the salt, but also directly lick the salt block. Lots of times I hear people say the deer will never lick the salt directly. Guess this shows otherwise. Also, you will see that the squirrels and band-tailed pigeons seem to like the salt also. Interesting stuff. You can also see about 3/4 of the way through that film that we put out a mineral block and the deer completely ignore it in favor of the plain salt. Not sure if it's just because it was new or if they really prefer the other block. This is the long version, which contains 415 images/video clips all strung together and sped up. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/video_clips/mt_lemmon_3.wmv Enjoy! Amanda -
here is a link to the rifle rest that Jim White makes. It's called Jimmy's rest and it's on the bottom of this page: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/adaptors.htm It screws into your tripod head (or you can attach it to a quick release plate for faster setup). I use the harris bipod. I use the bigger version (13-27 inches I think). It's a bit heavy, but I love the extra stability. Last year I used a tripod under the butt end of the gun with the harris bipod set so I could shoot from sitting position. I am frequently hunting in areas with tall grass or brush so that position works for me. This setup takes awhile to get right and I highly recommend you practice getting this stuff all setup for a shot before you need it. But this works for me since most of the time I have plenty of time to take a shot. This year I made a 370 yard shot (longest ever for me) with this setup and it was benchrest steady!! Loved it. Here is a pic of my shot setup.

Fun with Trail Cam Pics and Video!
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Glad you guys are enjoying these. Can't believe nobody has mentioned the squirrels having sex on video. I think it's around 1:13 of the longer video. I also found it really interesting to learn that Band-tailed pigeons use salt. I never knew that before putting this trail cam up. But if you do a search for band-tailed pigeons and mineral licks you can find out that many states find the best way to survey for these birds is to find a natural or manmade mineral lick and count the birds there. Jason Lewis Bronze Coues Shed
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Here is a pic of the shed holding a business card. You can see it works really nicely for this purpose. I'll give BassPro a little press since they donated a nice bow package to the auction. Amanda -
Thanks Doug!! Amanda

That's interesting stuff. I hadn't heard about those before. Thanks for the link Doug. Some good demo videos on that site. Amanda

Maybe Jason will bring some to the CW.com gathering in June and we can hide them and have people actually find the "shed". hehehe. Might be fun! AManda -
Thanks for sharing some of his life with us Lark. Very nice tribute to your friend. Amanda
