Well, my hubby and I were out checking some trail cams this evening when we noticed a white circular object in the bank of the creek. He asked me if it was a shell or something and I looked and thought it was bone. We looked at it some more and noticed the suture marks where the bones meet on the skull and wondered what kind of skull it was. I took a little stick and moved some dirt to try and find a jaw and then found a couple teeth that sure look human to me. The whole shape is human and I think it's ancient. The wear on the teeth look like you see on ancient indian skulls in museums. I think it's pretty cool. It's underneath about 5 feet of soil and it doesn't really look like it was buried there since all the layers of dirt around it are intact. It's more like it washed down there and got covered with dirt over time, or just the force of a storm pushed the skull into the bank? I don't know. If any of you guys are trained archaeologists, let me know. I'll report it to authorities and perhaps we can get an expert out there to figure out how old the skull is. Would be really cool to know, don't you think? This is the overview, the skull is the white sphere near the bottom of the pic. there were some peices on the dirt below the skull too. suture marks on skull you can see the two teeth showing in here on the left side of skull. I believe the skull is laying on it's right side, with front of skull (jaw) facing toward left side of photo. View looking back toward bank and skull. Amanda

Any White Mountain Experts?
CouesWhitetail replied to lucky2hunt's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
Great report Ilene!! Glad you guys had such a nice time. Amanda -
It is hard to figure out from the picture, but basically the little round part in the pic goes on the front of the hinge between the barrels. That little round part has a threaded hole that you can then screw the post into and then the shorter barrel screws on to your tripod head plate. Then the post that is attached to your binos slips into the receiver barrel on your tripod head. As with anything I sell, if you don't like it, you can return it for a refund. But I think you will find it works very well. Amanda

Becoming an Outdoorswoman Workshop - Aug 14-16
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in Conservation Group Events
This is a great program that I have been teaching classes at for years. This workshop makes a great gift for a special lady in your life! Amanda Beat the heat with a retreat in the pines. The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop is scheduled for August 14-16, 2009. The program will be held at Friendly Pines Camp near Prescott. It will begin at noon on Friday and end at noon on Sunday. These workshops are designed to welcome women outdoors with expert instructors teaching in an enjoyable, non-threatening environment. The August workshop will offer 32 different classes roughly divided into thirds. One part shooting/hunting, one part fishing and the third part non-consumptive sports like camping, canoeing and rappelling. There is something for everyone. One new class for 2009 is a falconry class where participants will get an opportunity to handle raptors. Another recent addition is an advanced fly-fishing class using float tubes. Classes are held during the day, and evenings are filled with fun and entertainment like night hikes, musicians, and storytellers. Participants stay in rustic cabins, but there are showers and bathrooms in each cabin. There is a central dining hall for meals. “There is always a lot of fun. I love to see the women interact and watch the camaraderie grow,” says Linda Dightmon, the BOW coordinator for the Arizona Wildlife Federation, which sponsors the program in partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. “The only thing the participant needs to bring is her personal stuff, a good attitude and a willingness to learn,” Dightmon added. Equipment, materials, food and lodging are all included in the $240 registration fee. The only exception is Outdoor Photography class where participants will need to bring a camera. Enrollment is open to all women 18 and older. For more information, a schedule of classes, and a registration form, please call the Arizona Wildlife Federation office at 480-644-0077 or email us at awf@azwildlife.org. -

Party at Jim Reynolds' house!
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
I had a great time at the party, thanks to Jim and Susan for making it a good time for everyone! We had some great food there and it was fun meeting many new people and spending time with those forum members I already knew. I can't say enough about the amazing antler collection Jim has. I have seen it before, but still it just takes your breath away and knocks you over when you enter that room! I took tons of photos of the antlers, but unfortunately I am having some kind of problem with the card and can't retrieve any of the pics!!! It's killing me, but hopefully Josh and some others will post more pics. Thanks to those that already have. Amanda -

hey, guys - i'm up at mt. lemmon and my jeep has a fuel leak -- trying to drive down monday morning. if you're a mechanic, particularly around the catalina highway area, can you help? figured i'd put the word out in the CW community and see if one of you is a tucson mechanic who can help. please call if so -- i don't have email access here (my husband paul posted this from home). give me a shout here at 520-576-1363. thats the number where i'm staying; call that one sunday night or monday morning -- cell reception is spotty here, but i'll be able to check messages monday morning once i drive down -- assuming my trusty jeep can make it! ~ amanda.... 520-576-1363 (sunday night, and for a while monday AM) -
help! i need a mechanic in tucson (amanda)
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Yeah, it's nice sitting on a potential bomb! Luckily I felt like it was safe so I didn't worry much. The mechanics weren't worried at all either, so I guess it was ok. Anyway, made it home without an explosion! It didn't smell so strong of gas driving it today, probably because I used enough going up the mtn that it was a little lower than the leaking seal. help! i need a mechanic in tucson (amanda)
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Thanks for the all help guys. I can't say how great it is to have guys I can count on for help. Within half an hour of my husband making the post I had people calling with offers of help and suggestions for places to take the jeep. Turns out the leak is where the seal is on the top of the tank. If I understood correctly it's where the fuel line comes out from the tank and fuel pump (fuel pump is inside tank). I had the fuel pump replaced not too long ago and they think it was related to that. So anyway, they said it wasn't the cause of any of my problems. So, I didn't get it fixed there, figured I would take it back to my mechanic here in case it was warrantied due to previous fuel pump work. The check engine light recorded a misfire in the 3rd cylinder (I remember when that happened as I was merging onto I-19 to go to Jim's party! Thought I was going to stall on the highway!) and they said the plugs needed replacing. And the injectors and such needed cleaning. So we did that and they said my radiator (the part with the fins on it to let the air in (condensor?)) was so plugged with dirt and bugs that it was likely the cause of the overheating. So they air hosed that at least a little cleaner (the mechanic was rather shocked at what came out of there...hehehe, doesn't anybody drive there jeeps in the dirt?? ). I will have to hose it down later still to get more bugs out of there. I know there is also a separate fan that is only working intermittentlly, but of course it worked fine while at the shop. Anyway, they said if that isn't working it makes it hard for the car to cool. They were pretty perplexed as to the stalling on the way up Mt Lemmon, but my guess is it was related to overheating. Anyway, the jeep ran like a dream on my way home. Perhaps it was because my wallet was so much lighter Again, thanks so much to those that called and offered help. Larry, I tried to call you back so we could have lunch while I was at the dealership, but it kept saying the cellular customer is not available. I tried a bunch of times. Maybe i wrote the number down wrong? Brent, thanks for the help! And thanks to Eddy Corona for help also! Amanda -
Party at Jim Reynolds' house!
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
Thanks Chris, that sounds yummy!! If anyone has a popup canopy tent that we can use for shade, you might bring it if it's convenient. I am sure we will need them, but it might be nice during the heat of the day. If you have extra chairs, bring those also. Looking forward to seeing you all there! Amanda -
One of our neighbors thought they were hearing a mtn lion at night on their property. They are familiar with the sounds that bobcats make and they said this sounded like it, but much bigger. Anyway, I put out a couple Covert 1 cams and left them for a few days. Got lost of pics of critters. When I saw this one I thought, wow, they were right! But then I realized it was just a house cat! It's a hard life out there, check out the injury on this rabbit. And check out the injury on this javelina other javie pics Loads of quail families with tiny babies and "teenagers" other critters

Hopefully it will not be as painful as the "Kick Me" signs we unknowingly wore on out backs as kids. Ok, well, our admin assistant says you can show the letter we sent with the decals that says you are paid up until 6/30/2010. Did you happen to save the letter? Amanda -

Maybe you can just wear a sticker on your forehead and they will let you in I will check with our admin assistant to see how they are handling it. It's a good point you raise. Amanda
