Sure thing Jeff!! Glad you are enjoying them! Good luck in Kuwait. Are you there for the military or on some kind of business? Amanda

What I am leaning toward doing now after the Marshall Lake campout is getting a nice propane smoker like Gino had. he made bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers and prime rib smoked to perfection. Those kinds of meals can be set to cook and smoke slowly while out on an evening hunt. Amanda

Here is a nice one that I learned from Ben Brochu while out doing a wildlife water project. It's very easy, fairly quick and very satisfying. Obviously you can make a smaller batch for fewer people. Also, you can take some of your home cooked chicken rather than canned. Or do like I have done a few times and take a rotissiere chicken from Fry's and use it in the soup. Then it's got lots more flavor than the canned. Tortilla Soup for ~25 people -12 cans of Swansons chicken broth - 4 cans of diced tomatoes - 8 small cans of diced green chilis - 4 bunches of cilantro - 2 for soup and 2 for topping - 4 bunches of green onions - 2 for soup and 2 for topping - 1 large onion - 3 cloves of garlic - 12 cans of diced chicken breast from Costco - 15 limes - shredded cheese - tortilla chips - salt and pepper to taste Put all of this together and bring to a boil and cook for at least 30 minutes until the onion is soft. Once this is done, it's ready to serve. Top with cheese, tortilla chips, cilantro, green onions and a squeeze of lime. You can also top with peppers and avocado if you want. I think the soup is actually better the next day after the flavors have combined better.

I would say generally you can take the SD card out and use it in your camera to view photos. That's what I do for both the Covert 1 and 2. However, RedRabbit just informed me he wasn't able to preview images from his Covert SD card in his high end digital SLR. I don't know if all SLRs are like that or just the one he has. I use the SD card in my little point and shoot digital and it works great for reviewing photos. I have a Canon Powershot. But you can always see more details on the computer at home, so I take an extra SD card and swap them out so I can view the images larger on my computer. Amanda Not only can I view with my camera, I also format the cards with it before installing. Works great every time. I was impressed with the sensitivity of my Covert 1. I picked up a doe who just barely peeked her head into the photo! I set it up so that I could try and take some photos from further away this week so we will see how far it can reach! Those who can't read the cards with their cameras, try formatting them in the viewing camera before installing in the Covert. They are saved as JPG so if you can't read them, it is a directory issue. Do you only format the cards on your regular camera and not in the Covert? Still works in the Covert OK? What brand/model camera do you use to view the pics? Amanda

Nice to know! Thanks! Me too! It's hard to beat the quality of pics that people can get from homemade trail cams. Amanda

There might be a way to navigate on your nikon to the trail cam folder. I know my canon allows me to create folders (which I never do) to organize images. You might check your manual if you haven't already and see if there is something you can do to view that other folder. Sometimes it's just a default to read the folder it created, but you might be able to change that default or just navigate to the other folder somehow. My Canon seems to create a folder also, but I think it only does this when I actually take photos with the camera. But when I just put the SD card in with trail cam images it just reads those images. I focus not only on putting them in spots where people don't go normally (not on a waterhole that is on a map, not near a road), but also focus on setting them up in odd spots (on the ground, higher in a tree, under a branch, in some boulders, etc). Almost everyone I know puts them 3.5-4 feet up on a tree over water or salt. If someone finds the water or salt all they have to do is look around at that level on all the obvious trees. However, if your camera is not in the "usual" spot, then they will have a much harder time spotting it. Also, if you don't put them on water or salt, it's a lot harder for someone to find your camera. Use a trail some distance away from the water or salt. As has been said the Coverts are nice and small and easier to hide than most cams. Also with the Covert 2 you can use the Tree 60 to put the camera up in a spot people don't normall look, on smaller branches higher or lower in a tree or bush, or on a log on the ground. here is an example of the tree60 being used in an unsusual spot. This camera is in the roots of trees along a creek bed. If someone did walk down there the odds of them looking in the tree roots at just the right time are slim. Most people look down while walking unless they have a reason to start looking around. here are some pics of spots with the Covert 1 set on the ground:

What type of canon do you have? My guess would be your camera doesn't recognize the formating that the Covert uses to format the card? Amanda

The PIR sensor is a different and a little wider in the Covert 2. The case design is different (side opening rather than bottom and includes a rubber gasket). Some people like that case design for easier access to the batteries. The Covert 2 also comes with an SD card whereas the Covert 1 doesn't. And then the 2 extra LEDs and threaded hole in the bottom are the other differences of the Covert 2 vs Covert 1. Other than that they are pretty much the same. They both can be set to take 3 megapixel or 5 megapixel images. Both have the same video capabilities and they have the same options for changing sensitivity, video length, number of pics, delays between triggers, etc. Amanda

Hey All, We will be having our next CouesWhitetail.com get-together July 11 at Jim Reynolds' house in Sahuarita. Jim and his wife are graciously hosting us, and I hear that TexasHunter will be making his famous BBQ brisket. Jim lives out in the country and there is room on his land to camp overnight if you would like to stay overnight (either Fri or Sat night). The main party is on Saturday and you can come by anytime during the day. I will post a map when I get it. Jim has an outstanding collection of Coues antlers that is well worth a drive to his house to see them!! Amanda
