That's really cool. They do have a call note that sounds like an elk mew. Some describe it as saying a sharp "KLE-er" Amanda -
wow, that's a nice incentive! Amanda

Very neat idea!! Amanda

You are right, 20s and snow was great, but it was the 40 mph winds that killed us!! Amanda

It was way hilariious!! Thanks for the good times Josh! Sorry that big buck didn't step out, but there is always next year!! Maybe Scott will do some "Pruning" in there to get us some shooting lanes. Amanda

What kind of bird is this???

They are Flickers (a type of woodpecker). Fairly common. The white rump patch and the colored mustache are pretty diagnostic. They spend a lot of time on lawns foraging as well as in trees. They have beautiful underwing colors (yours are probably red-shafted, but there are other ones like the gilded and yellow-shafted (yellows are mostly out East though) ) for more info: http://www.flickr.com/groups/btaphotoclass/ Amanda -

Sometimes when people insert photos into their posts they don't hit "return" after doing each pic and so they end up side by side and stretch out the post too wide. I (and likely the other moderators) try and fix this whenever we see it so that people don't have to deal with that. I don't think it's on your end, but the poster's. However, I didn't see that problem in the thread you mentioned. Perhaps someone fixed it before I saw it though. Amanda

Nice write-up and nice shooting! Amazing how much the little bit of wind mattered on that farthest shot. Amanda -

Geez Gamehauler, that's a bit harsh.... He is offering a trade not just trying to get something for nothing. Doesn't seem so bad to me. Anyway, I hope you and whoever takes you up on it make a deal that works for you both. Welcome to the forum. Amanda

Glad you are healing and feeling better GH!! Amanda

Actually, no, I didn't shoot anything. Had a great time helping Scott and Trent get their bucks and helped Josh try and get a buck with no success. Then the last two days Scott and I went into the area that holds two particular bucks I was interested in and we couldn't find either. Of course 20 degree weather with 40 mph winds and snow flurries didn't really help! Those were some mighty cold times. Scott and I were shaking uncontrollably for a lot of the time! Had to move glassing spots just to warm up. I did manage to find a nice shed from a 90-inch buck that Scott happened to have the matching set of sheds from the year prior. That was neat. It's disappointing for me to come home without my buck, but at least I had a great time hunting with Scott and Trent and Josh. Amanda here is a pic of Trent's Buck. It was a cool deal where we glassed him up way across a canyon. Trent does a ton of long-range shooting and felt comfortable taking the shot even though it was something like 650-700 yards. Anyway, he hit the buck and it bedded. He and Scott decided to hike over and put a kill shot in it while I kept an eye on the buck from across the canyon. An hour and a half later they are walking up to the buck and have to get within 10 yards in order to even see it. The buck bolts but in the 30's I see it drop to the ground almost immediately and then I hear the BOOM of the gun since I was so far away. It was very cool. Scott calls Trent's final kill shot "poetry in motion". Imagine hitting a deer running full speed only 10 yards away from you. I hope Trent doesn't mind me posting the pic and a little of the story. Josh had hunted another part of the unit for the first few days and then came and joined Scott and Trent and I. The day we found a nice buck for Josh, I hiked down with him to get as close as we could to it. unfortunately that was only 500 yards and the slope we were on was thick with oak and juniper trees. We found an opening and the best place Josh found to set up was to be prone and laying over a bear grass clump! Here is a neat pic of him in his sniper position waiting for the big buck to step out. It never did. However the 90'ish buck that was with him paraded around and gave all kinds of opportunities for shots. And it was SOOOOO tempting to shoot the smaller buck that I actually got behind my gun and considered it very seriously. The shed I found. Some pics of the snow flurries in mtns around us.
