Please help me welcome Miller's Southwestern Processing as a sponsor of CouesWhitetail.com. Many of you may know the owner, Mike Miller, is a great guy and dedicated hunter. Miller's SW Processing has been in business for 20 years and they provide outstanding customer service and tastey treats! Want some summer sausage made from your elk or deer? They make all kinds, varying from mild to a spicey Jalapeno and Cheese. Get snack sticks, italian sausage, chorizo, or whatever you want. Miller's has drop off locations in some of the elk units, so that you can easily get the animal to them. And they even offer delivery service in PHX and Tucson. You can also get domestic livestock processed there. Miller's is offering $10.00 off of processing orders of $75.00 or more & $15.00 off processing orders $125.00 or more to all CouesWhitetail.com members. Valid August 1-31st 2011 I have personally used their service and was really happy with the sausage I got back from them. They just redesigned their website, so check it out and keep them in mind when you get an elk or deer this year. http://www.southwesternprocessing.com/ Miller's Southwestern Processing 2689 E. I believe Mike will be speaking about game care again at the AZ Deer Association Hunter's Clinic Aug. 13. He is always very informative (and usually he brings some game sausage samples!!). for more info on the clinic: http://www.azdeer.org/hunter%20clinic%202011/hunt_clinic_2011.html -

I had a USFS employee tell me last week that it's illegal to use trail cameras....I said "what do you mean illegal?" and he said you can't leave anything in the forest for more than 24 hrs! Hmmmmm....it seems we all get different answers from different USFS employees. Seems to depend on the region/district. Some seem more tolerant of trail cams than others.

How I have been spending my summer...
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in The Campfire
It's not a problem, that particular owl takes the mouse so fast that there is no time for the mouse to really go anywhere. You could see in the video where the owl almost takes the mouse off my hand before I even put it out there. This owl had a baby to feed and was very eager to take mice. and just an fyi, the hand feeding isn't normally something we do...we just gave it a try this last visit. it was pretty cool to interact with a raptor that way! My friend got a couple tiny punctures (like pin pricks) in her hand from the talons. It's an exercise in trust...one miscalculation by the owl and you lose some skin or muscle. They have very serious talons. -

How I have been spending my summer...

They only started letting us back in last week. Some owl territories burned really hot, some seem really good. In my experience with major fires (like the one in the catalinas), the owls can really benefit from some of these huge fires. As long as their roost areas and nest areas don't burn up too bad, they can continue to use those patches of trees even when all around was incinerated in the fire. The owls are heat intolerant and so they need some dense pockets of trees to stay cool. Usualy the places they select for roosts and nests are the coolest, moistest forest around and so those areas burn less hot. In the Catalinas, the owls had an amazing year (in terms of reproduction) post Bullock and Aspen fires. I think the rodent populations explode post fire and the owls take advantage of it. However, even though they reproduce well, it's possible the survival of those young is lower when they have to leave and find their own territories because there is less forest for them. The Chiricahuas have greened up amazingly since the fire. I took some pics to post but haven't resized them yet. -

Hey all, I am wondering if anyone has a small popup or camper that I can rent for my elk hunt. I am hoping to be up there for two weeks and it would be nice to be in a little better shelter than a tent. Has to be lightweight since I will tow it behind my jeep. A jumping jack would be great or something like a 'lil scamp. call or email. 928-200-0544 amanda@coueswhitetail.com

Sad news about the Pinetop bear attack
CouesWhitetail replied to Airbusdriver's topic in The Campfire
+1 sad news indeed. -
As has been said, it depends on availability of other water sources. If you have the only water hole within a mile, then you can bet they will use it, but if there has been recent rain or if there are other tanks/springs, etc within a 1/2 mile or so, then they are not so easy to pattern.
