    LOOOONG Posts

I feel for me!!! Thanks for the sympathy. It used to be easy for me to read everything that was posted in the forum, but it's grown so much that I can't hardly do that anymore. Thank goodness I have the help of most everyone here who reads through the posts and reports inappropriate content if they see it! For those that don't know there is a "Report button" in the bottom left corner of every post, so if you see something you think is inappropriate like spam or personal attacks or whatever, you can click on that and it sends a notice to all the moderators. Then we look it over and made a decision on if we agree with the report or not.

    Scoring question

LOL!! Yes, there are a lot of rules and regulations with scoring and that link is for the Boone and Crockett manual which helps measurers learn the scoring system.

Hunting and Angling Heritage Work Group

For the last couple years I have been involved in the Hunting and Angling Heritage Work Group. This is a group of sportsmen, conservation groups, outdoor-related businesses and AGFD that have come together to focus on ways to promote hunting and fishing and outdoor activities in Arizona. The hope is to keep the hunting/fishing tradition alive well into the future. This past Saturday and Sunday we had our winter meeting up at the Horseshoe ranch (an AGFD property north of Phx south of Camp Verde). The HAHWG holds meetings twice a year and these two day meetings are designed to help provide the tools needed for outdoor groups to grow and to find ways to reach people that are not yet connected to the outdoors. This is the group that prompted me to create the women's javelina hunting camp that focuses on getting adult women a chance to learn how to hunt. The first day of the meeting was held in an open barn and it was VERY windy and cold!! In fact, I got so cold I had to sit there with my sleeping bag over me to stay warm enough or else I would have had to jog in place just to stay warm (which I did until I remembered my sleeping bag!). You know it's cold when a bunch of outdoorsmen are shivering during the meeting! I felt bad for the presenters who showed up in nice (but not warm) clothes to share their information with the group. But the wind died down about 8 pm and made for a very nice evening around the campfire. The wind was so strong that we had to hold our plates down while enjoying the evening meal after the first day of the meeting. Craig McMullen and Doug Burt of the AGFD have poured a ton of time and passion into making this working group very productive. I encourage anyone who is interested in helping to promote the future of hunting and angling to get involved with this group. Most of the sportsmens groups are members of this working group. During this recent meeting we learned more about marketing and promoting an intangible product such as the amazing experience of getting outside and hunting. Much of our time in the working group is focused on improving the many youth and adult hunting camps that are conducted by the sportsmens groups so that we are maximizing our time and being as effective as we can be with the limited volunteers and financial resources we have. I find these meetings to be encouraging and depressing at the same time. We discuss threats to the future in hunting, the drop in ranks of hunters and yet we also find ways to help encourage participation in the outdoors. There are many fine people involved in this pursuit and I find it uplifting to know that these people are giving of themselves for the future of hunting. Yuma Valley Rod and Gun Club provided all the food for this meeting (with a grant from the WCC license plate tag fund)and WOW was it good!! Tri-tip steak over the grill and some phenomenal deserts (decadent chocolate cake and cheesecake were my favorites) were the highlights. Many thanks to the Yuma guys!!! I just can't say enough about how great the food was. They served a perfect breakfast on Sunday morning with eggs, biscuits and gravy and bacon. Yummy! I didn't take many pictures this weekend, but I hope that others who attended and who frequent this forum will add their pics. Steve Clark was there and I think he took lots of pics, so maybe he will share.... I encourage you all to think about what you are doing to expand the number of hunters/fishers in Arizona. Take a non-hunter hunting or fishing soon! or volunteer to help at the many fine hunting camps that are offered in this state. And think about joining the HAHWG to learn more about what you can do to reach out to non-hunters and as they say at the meeting...make sure those non-hunters are at the very least on the "positive side of neutral" when it comes to hunting issues. If you want to get involved in this group email Doug Burt with AGFD, DBurt@azgfd.gov He will add you to the groups mailing list and let you know the details for our next meeting which will be at the end of June/early July.

    Scoring question

The answer is....well, it's complicated.... From your picture it looks to me like it would be a normal tine coming off the main beam and therefore the mass would be taken between the two points and thus the buck would be penalized for it's lack of symmetry in tine number and mass measurements. However, if you think that tine is a branch off the 3rd and doesn't come off the main beam, then it's a abnormal point and you would take your circumference 1/2 way to the end of the main beam as you mentioned. There is a special rule for a situation called Common base points also that may apply here. Common base points are points that are somewhat joined near the base and share some webbing between them. In order to determine if they are common base points, you have to take a look at the cross section of the base and see if it would form a clear figure eight. I am not sure if this link will work ok, but I did a search for common base points boone and crockett and you might be able to read all it about it here: http://books.google.com/books?id=OhFnqfEqIC8C&pg=PA31&dq=boone+and+crockett+common+base+points&hl=en&sa=X&ei=P2UgT6D5KuarsQKPwt2pDg&ved=0CDYQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=boone%20and%20crockett%20common%20base%20points&f=false

    Bowfishing tournament?

I think one of the legal issues is insurance and that has held us back from doing more tournaments. In order to get a permit from the agency that manages the lake, you will likely have to provide liability insurance. I believe that with regard to tournament payouts, you have to pay out all the money you take in.

    Bowfishing tournament?

I am all for a CouesWhitetail.com bowfishing tournament, neat idea! Let me know what I can do to help with it. I probably can't attend, but if someone agrees to organize it, I can mass email members periodically to keep everyone informed.
  12. I honestly do not know, I don't know how to measure antlers. Maybe when I see Amanda at the Women's Javi Hunt she can measure it for me! Thanks everyone!!! Bring it and I will measure it for you!
  13. Congratulations!! That's a bummer you didn't get to make it happen with your bow, but congratulations on your buck! Looks like long beams on that buck! Javier will be donating the same hunt to the AZ Deer Association banquet again this year, so you just might get your chance to go back.

HB 2072 Sale of big game tags

Actually, as I posted before, I haven't decided on this yet. When making a decision about this, I think it's important to get as many facts as possible. I think it's important to hear from lots of hunters, the AGFD commission, other sportsmens groups as well as the people who created this bill. I expect to be attending a meeting next week with the sportsmens groups to discuss this issue. Just wondering if you did in fact attend a meeting on this subject. If so what did you find out. Thanks! No, I didn't. As I understand it, the meeting was cancelled since the bill was dropped.

    Looks good!!
  18. Hope you guys are out in the hills somewhere having a great day!
  19. Hopefully most of you have seen the banner ad at the top of the forum promoting this contest that Sportsmans Warehouse has been holding. Well the deadline is coming up in a couple days and so if you want to enter your buck or bull, the time is now! You have to enter your trophy by Saturday. Call the mesa sportsmans warehouse for more info or just stop by the store with your trophy and fill out the entry form. Basically you leave the trophy there and they will have them all SCI scored the following Saturday and announce the winners. Top winners get a few hundred bucks to spend at Sportsmans! I stopped by the store the other day and saw some GREAT trophies! There were some excellent Coues, Muleys and Elk. The trophies are displayed up on the ceiling and it's hard to get good photos, especially with just my cell phone, but here are a few pics. Check out the coues in velvet!! It's hanging upside down and was really hard to get pics of, but it's a brute. some stuff had just come in and was still in the manager's office...some nice muleys and coues: and some pics as they turned them in:

    Shame on you

LOL!! While I do indeed expect hunters to follow the law and not drive quads off road or leave trash at campsites, I certainly see it all the time and it's very dissapointing. This post raises the issue and I am glad to see that but blaming all AZ hunters? really? I pretty much always come home with more trash than I started with because it's my opinion that I should leave a place in better condition than I found it whenever possible. I hope a lot of you do the same because we can't completely control what others do but instead can control what we do to help the situation.

    "Over-Achiever"

Did you get video of him rutting the does? That would be fun to see him chasing around mule deer does. It certainly does happen often enough that a lot of people have witnessed whitetail bucks chasing muley does.

    Finally!!

    Wow, Congratulations on the double!

    New Minimum Draw Weight

As Darr pointed out in his first post the regs show they left the 40 lbs for buffalo, but 30lbs for most anything else. There seemed to be a typo for the turkey part of the regs where it said you could use a bow with a pull of 40 30 pounds....
