Bears are Hungry and Thirsty this Summer
CouesWhitetail replied to lonne's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Now I have bear tracks on my popup to match the bear claw marks from several years ago that I got on my Jeep! The trailer smells like a bear now! Will need to get some screens repaired. I called the AGFD warden and reported this so they can inform campers in the area and hopefully prevent any further problems. If any of you camp in the Turkey Creek area of the Chiricahuas, please be careful! A ranch hand in the area said they had a bear get into their trash that same night. -

If both dogs were in camp, they might have kept the bear away but just one might have been in serious danger from the bear. It's ironic that we backpacked into an area loaded with bear sign the night before and had no problems. Then at this little spot where the camper was, we saw no bear sign, but had the problem. -

We left the camper at like 0330 and unfortunately left the aquarium of mice in it (that I use for the owl survey work I do) and a cooler of food. Normally we take that stuff with us....can't believe we were stupid enough to leave it in the camper. We came back at 0700 to find the camper in chaos. The bear didn't do too much damage since the canvas pulled away from the top and door without ripping. -
Not sure what it is, but it's definitely not a bat house.....the bats would cook inside that thing!

Indeed the bears are getting desperate....we have had a few encounters this summer in the Chiricahuas and one broke into my popup camper the other morning while we were out doing owl surveys. Please don't be stupid like I was and leave food in your popup or camp unattended! -

Glad you found a good home for a good dog!

I was talking to an AGFD warden that was up there this afternoon. She didn't say the cause but said they were calling in the fire fighters and the smoke didn't look too bad late this evening. Hopefully it won't go nuts. Winds died down around sunset and that should help.

Thunder and BLACK clouds over Pinals and Hogs! Bring on the rain!!
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in The Campfire
I was just up on the roof adjusting the float valve on our cooler when I looked toward the Pinals and the Hog Mtns on San Carlos and saw a wall of very black clouds and heard thunder! We just had our entire roof redone a week or so ago due to it leaking, so now I am ready, BRING ON THE RAIN!!! -
Hunting boots: what's good and what isn't?
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesSlayer77's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I have been really impressed with the Kenetrek boots I got last year before my coues hunt. They have unbelievable traction and ankle and foot stabilization. Very tough boot. I have been hiking with them all summer in the Chiricahuas and Pinalenos and they really give me extra grip and power to make some tough climbs in rocky, steep country. I got my boots from sponsor Santana Outdoors. Eric wears Kenetreks as well and if you give him a call he can give you more info about them. The ones I bought were the women's mountain hiker boot. They run much smaller than other boots. I bought a 1/2 size larger than normal and I think I probably should have bought them even another 1/2 size larger. They are a very stiff boot at first, but really great support and traction. When I wear my old Merrels, it's just amazing the difference. The Kenetreks protect my feet from jagged rocks much better than other boots I have owned (including Danners). here is a link to the boot I bought: http://www.santanaou...in-Hiker/Detail here are some other models that are men's boots: http://www.santanaou...ide-boot/Detail http://www.santanaou...ker-boot/Detail http://www.santanaou...reme-400/Detail -
Surely, you have some more pics than just the one? I love seeing your pics....

Hello All, I am very sad to announce that Jim White's wife has cancer and has been receiving chemo for awhile now. However, the chemo has been so hard on her that the doctor recently stopped the treatments. This whole thing has been terribly hard for both of them and I ask for you all to pray for her recovery and for strength for both of them as they go through this ordeal. Please take a moment and send good thoughts and prayers their way.

This article is from the Pope and Young Club and it discusses the many benefits that have come from the Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson acts, which raise money for conservation by putting a tax on hunting and fishing gear. This article discusses the 75 year history of these acts and it's a really good article for all hunters to read through so you can have some facts to share with non-hunters. You might even want to send non-hunters this article to help show how hunters actually are conservationists. Thanks to Pope and Young for sharing the article and to Craig McMullen of AGFD for sending me the article and requesting it get posted. PY_Ethic_PR_75.pdf
