Carbon fiber tripods
CouesWhitetail replied to elkhunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
get the promaster carbon fiber that I sell. I LOVE this tripod! It's so lightweight it's ridiculous. It's perfect for coues hunting. Everyone who I have shown this tripod to has fallen in love with it! I just sold two to my hunting buddies last week, they are so excited about the weight savings and the quality! It's Scott Adam's new favorite tripod too. As always, I have a 100% money-back guarrantee....if you don't like the product, send it back for a refund. This tripod has twist legs, so no tabs to snap off like your velbon. http://store.coueswh...r-tripod-t325p/ I sell a larger more expensive carbon fiber tripod, but for the size and cost savings, I much prefer the promaster. -
Do bucks come back when spooked??
CouesWhitetail replied to Jojo261's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
It depends on how bad they were spooked and if they know why they spooked. A shot at a buck from 500 yards...it's possible the buck didn't know what spooked him. But if you are setting up 200 yards away from where you expect the deer to show up, you might be getting winded too (in other words the deer might not be coming in because they smell you). I would look for a water source (you mentioned the tank was dried up, so find active water source) in the area and climb a hill that gives you a vantage point and then you will be more likely to see some bucks. Sounds like you might be wasting your time in that spot where you spooked them. -
Women's Coues Hunting Camp Nov 9-11, 2012
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Know of a woman who wants to learn how to hunt Coues Deer? Well, here is the perfect opportunity for her to come and have fun learning how to hunt our favorite deer. This camp is being put together by forum member Carl Young (aka Younggunz). CouesWhitetail.com will be helping to sponsor this camp along with Sportsman's Warehouse and the National Wild Turkey Federation's Women in the Outdoors. This camp will be very much like the women's javelina hunting camp that we have held the last couple years, only it will focus on Coues Deer. The camp is down in Unit 36A, B and C and all novice women hunters will be matched up with an experienced hunter to help teach them how to hunt. Please see the attached flyer for more info. And if you know a lady who wants to attend the camp, have them contact Carl Young at carl@teamyounggunz.com Thank you Carl for all your work getting this camp going and all the future camps you are working on! For those that don't know Carl has created a non-profit designed to get novice hunters (kids and adults) out in the field hunting. He can explain more about the camp and the nonprofit if he likes. At this point we don't know how many ladies we will have so we don't know how many mentors we will need, but if you think you might be interested in helping out with this camp, please email Carl. I too love the Havalon knives, but caution everyone to be careful using them as they are essentially a surgical scalpel that can lop off a finger pretty quick! you can help support this site and buy havalon knives here: http://store.coueswhitetail.com

Field butchering pack out?
CouesWhitetail replied to ultramag's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Also, there is no need to remove the quarters while boning out a coues....just bone it out on the body, no need to remove and hang to bone out. And please remember to take all those used up havalon blades home with you and dispose of them properly!! I would hate to accidentally sit on one while glassing on some mtn somewhere! Just put the used blade into the packet that the new blade was in and take it home with you. -
Mule deer or Coues deer?
CouesWhitetail replied to crazyaboutcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Coues deer for sure. As has been said, coues can have dark topped tails, but this one is fluffy and not rope-like. You can also look at the gland on the lower outside part of the rear leg.....the one in this photo is small and round like a coues buck, not longer like a muley or a hybrid. here is an article about hybrids http://www.coueswhitetail.com/2012/05/tails-with-a-dark-side-the-truth-about-whitetail-mule-deer-hybrids/ -

Hey All, Many of you already know that we are hosting a Coues deer hunting camp for novice women hunters Nov 9-11 down in the 36s. We had cooks lined up, but they can't make it now. So we are in need of some camp cooks. Food will be paid for by the grant, but we need volunteers willing to cook it. We expect about 60-80 people in camp, so it will be a fair amount of work. If you have any interest or know someone who can help, please call Carl Young. 520-405-3730 thanks for your consideration!

Personally I don't feel antler restrictions will do much good unless you also drop hunting pressure (ie number of tags). The point of antler restrictions is to allow young bucks to grow up, but with antler restrictions in place, you just move ALL the hunting pressure onto the larger bucks. Which means lower survival for big bucks. If you want big bucks, you need to increase their survival to past age 4-5, and protecting spikes and forkies just gets you past about age 2. I think a better strategy is to reduce the number of permits to increase survival of all bucks and also reduce crowds. To me, that increases the quality of the hunt. I also really don't like that our deer have to go through four seasons pretty much back to back, but at least that addresses the overcrowding issue. My UPS delivery guy told me the other day that although he has been an avid hunter for quite awhile, he is contemplating quitting because he can't stand the crowds. He says he would rather get a tag once every 4 years and hunt with fewer people and more bucks than get a tag every year.
