My son got a little lucky and drew the very last junior tag for his unit. He has a very specific area that he enjoys hunting javelina at so we decided that’s where we’ll camp and hunt this year. Opening day came around with good weather, decent deer rut but not a single javelina to be found. We did our best to cover as much country from high vantage points with no luck. Saturday we decided to hit up some nearby areas and located a broken up herd, likely broke up from the last few days of the archery season. This herd was skittish and didn’t want to stop to feed. We sat back and watched them cruise about 3/4 of a mile and they settled down and started to feed. Pops stayed back to spot while Colby and I began the long stalk. We crested the final hill and was happy to see the herd was still feeding, 80 yards across the cut. We quickly got set up and he made the close shot count.

Let’s just think for a bit… 500 general rifle tags in a unit vs 30 deer harvest limit for OTC archery. I think the fish and game may be a$$ backwards here. Especially the southern units, guys/ guides are hammering bucks on the general rifle tags these days. Maybe they should limit the general rifle tags… Let alone there are only 2,800 out of state folks allowed to draw OTC for the whole state.

Something has to be done??? C'mon Trphyhntr, I love massive antlers as much as the next guy but sounds like you want to prevent someone else from hunting if they don't do it how you prefer. We all have our favorite style, or way, of hunting (archery, rifle, muzzy, long-range shooting, sitting water, spot and stalk etc). One of my hunting buddies doesn't care about antlers and has given away the antlers to all the deer he has ever taken, he is strictly a meat hunter. Sometimes I was willing to shoot the first buck I got a shot at cause I want the meat that year, and other times I have passed on the first buck to hold out for something a little bigger. We don't all have the same goals when it comes to hunting. You do you, and don't get your panties in a bunch if somebody else isn't doing it your way. Now, having said that, I hope you get a toad this year!

UPDATE- After 3 days, ended up turning dog into animal control. He was chipped and owner contacted. Apparently was missing for almost a month but never reported. Owner never came to pick him up. After a week in jail, my cousin ended up adopting him and taking him to cold and snowy Idaho. Perfect for the husky who has adapted well and goes to the office everyday.

If something needs to be done it Could be really easy. Leave the archery tags and seasons as they are, but you have to draw them. So you have to choose between a rifle hunt and archery hunt. I bet it would eliminate 80% of the dudes who shoot dinks because they will apply for rifle hunts. Don't change bonus points, no special draw none of that. I am not convinced something needs to be done. What is the problem we are trying to solve?

    1) If you buy an OTC tag in January you don't get to enter the deer draw. No more 2 tags. 2) Get rid of electronic communication during a stalk and spotlight scouting. Fair Chase rules... AZGFD currently being hypocritical with preaching Fair Chase. PROBLEM SOLVED.... most of the current mule deer quotas will never be met. You're welcome.... Ed F

Another reason for mandatory harvest reporting for all seasons! Look how eye opening archery alone is.

Glad it worked out like that. People who dump their animals should be taken out and left naked in the middle of nowhere to try to survive like they expect the pet to.

Here's a question or a thought I guess. I wonder on the mandatory reporting numbers how many are fake. I mean what prevents PETA type of people from buying OTC tags and then just reporting they harvested. I think the numbers are not true because I saw units close in days. There is no way in some of the units thats possible. I think game and fish should do what other states do for otc to get true numbers. Have check in stations. Like I had to with bears. The harvest reporting numbers can easily be fake. The process needs help for sure. Thoughts?

No, my time in 2024 went to my early rifle bull tag and wifes first deer hunt. The end of 2024 and this year have gone to working extra to pay for that bull hunt. Just was curious the intention of the poll. Very slippery slope for people who want to ban sitting water. Im all for getting deer herd numbers back up and don't disagree to an extent of that idea. However where does the line get drawn.. Do they also ban sitting water on elk hunts, antelope hunts, sheep hunts, etc..

Are you just curious or trying to gather data to get sitting water banned?

I’ve used a mouth tab ‘to make it happen’ one season when I had shoulder surgery. Many bowhunters have. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

What I find interesting is this is the driest I have seen 42 since 2002. It's also the longest it has remained opened since the quota system went into effect. It came within a couple of days of making it all the way.

Unfortunately, Macie is not for sale. If I got rid of her, her little brother would run around unchecked!

We were able to get out for 4 days and had some bad luck with stalks. Either the wind shifted or there was no wind at all to conceal noises. On the 4th day we had some luck and pops was able to harvest this sow at 15 yards. 21 consecutive years for this fella with the stick and string.
