Doesn’t really matter if there’s a rut or not if you’re passing 110” bucks

Well I got skunked. I passed bucks i shouldn't have. For those that smirked, look up my strip hunt, I am not right in the head. Yesterday, I hiked in 2.5 miles in the dark. got to my glassing spot at the edge of the rez and after an hour and a half found a buck I would be happy with. It had eyeguards that looked longer than my hand. Set up for a shot @431 yards. I actually practiced upto 440 yards in preparation. I setup with a very solid rest, squeezed the trigger and the bucks disappeared. After checking for an hour or so. No signs of a hit, whatsoever. What I learned 1 - there is no rut in December 2 - hunters treat a December coues tag like a September elk tag. With a lot of helpers 3 - setting up for a long range shot solo is very hard 4 - practice shooting angles as much as distance. 5 - be persistent. No matter how boring looking at the same spot is, eventually something will walk by. No regrets. I will go back to still hunting for a bit.

heck, I think the best coues deer rutting I always see in the 36s is between Feb 1-15. And it's getting later and later. Fawn with spots in winter, shed antlers in May. heck, elk best rut in October now it seems. It's a changing game for sure.... This year I bet the secondary cycle will be best with the drought... heck I've seen crazy rut crap in early March...

Dont forget all the people with over the counter archery tags that fill up that unit! Seems like for every 1 rifle tag people bring 4 or 5 friends.

Rifle was built by Clinten Neff with Neffs Custom Rifles. It’s a shooter but I wanna build something a little more recoil friendly for my wife to also shoot. That’s a 3 shot group before I adjusted 2 clicks for the 4th shot. About 100 rounds down the barrel Build details: -Rem 700 action with a sako style extractor -22” Proof Carbon Barrel -Timey Trigger (think its the elite hunter if I recall correctly) -Christensen Arms FFT stock -Magpul bipod $2100 w/o scope Located in Safford but would be willing to meet or even ship if buyer covers cost.

Truth! After my nephew didn't get his goal and chose to get skunked, my arrogant butt doubled down on our bet and had a goal of 116" (one inch bigger than his biggest). I saw around 20 bucks, I was just looking for that next, next level buck. Now that I am pointless, I may do the October hunt next year and spend the hunt on top of the mountain looking for a particular buck.

I wouldn't say I gave you grief per say. You seem to usually get it done your way. Much respect still. But tripods rule!

Anyone have someone they use? I tried the number for Sage Antler Reproduction mention on other threads but the number is disconnected. I have a set of elk sheds that have been chewed on a bit and need some life brought back to them with color/stain. Thanks!

This is amazing for the kids. My son won second place last year and he still talks about it all the time. He loves the rifle and used the binoculars and case this year helping on an elk hunt. The time and items donated really support the future of hunting!!
