3 pointsMy buddy was the fortunate recipient of a once in a lifetime Idaho moose tag this year. Like many of the western states Idaho moose has taken a beating over the last few years from predation, disease, and ticks. We didn’t know what to expect, however harvest data still showed a very high success rate on hunts. My buddy traveled to the unit over the summer to get a feel for the landscape, acquire the necessary access permits, speak with the biologist, and learn the road systems. After that trip we felt optimistic and all we had to do then was count down the days until November. This would be a hunt after the rut, so food was key. These giants are worn to nothing after the rut and spend the majority of the day browsing. My wife and I flew in the evening before to meet him and his wife at the Airbnb and after an evening of beating the girls in cards our egos were overinflated and optimism was at an all time high 😂. Opening day was on par for November in Idaho…fog..then rain…then snow….then fog and snow. We continued covering country all morning glassing when we could and as the snow started to stick looking for fresh bull tracks to try and walk down. We spotted a few cows and calfs in the morning. Shortly after noon we cut two bull tracks and a cow crossing a logging road. We started on the track and about two hundred yards in we saw the cow. The fog and aspens were thick and we could not locate the bulls. After a minute or so we felt the wind switch and her head came up on alert. The hill erupted with moose and they were gone. We went back to covering ground and with it being midday started focusing on dark timber directly adjacent to feed. About two o clock we found two bulls bedded and one was nice. My buddy tried to get on him as he stood and started moving off but the fog and snow was thick and a good shot never presented itself. We hopped back in the buggy and circled to an upper road in hopes of picking them up from a better angle. As we start glassing from the high spot we see a black body moving through thick aspen below. A good bull pops out at 185 yards and my buddy anchors him. Such a cool experience! Average bull for that unit over the last five years was 34 4/8”. My buddy’s was 37 2/8”. We were able to get him broke down and packed out with daylight to spare. For those that haven’t had the privilege of eating moose it is extraordinary!

1 pointQuestion for those with oleander experience. I have an oleander tree 8” trunk near my back patio. I intend to cut to ground level as removing the root ball isn’t an option. After cutting, if I drill and apply glyphosphate or any recommended fluid, will this kill the root ball? thanks, Ed

1 pointI’m selling a like new in box Colt Python Target with its original box and paperwork. Condition is excellent with the revolver retaining 99% of its bluing, which has a mirror shine. Very faint drag line is present on the cylinder. Box is in good condition with a slight tear on one of the flaps. Included is its original paperwork, which shows its proper age. Finding a complete Python Target in this condition is rare. I’m mainly looking to trade for rare pre-ban rifles like HK-91/93, Sig Sauer, etc. I’m located in northern Phoenix. Must show ID when picking up. No shipping.

1 pointDay 22, the hunt continues. Hot dry conditions. 2 missed opportunities, one stalk on a ram that turned out to be too small. Mountain lion I couldn’t get close enough to for a shot and a miss on a ram yesterday the 21’st. Will advise further.

1 pointMy daughter turned 10 this year and was time to get her hunting big game. She got her first javelina in February. After that it was time for the fall draw. We were hopeful she would draw an early rifle tag. My Dad, wife, and myself all drew deer tags and she didn’t draw to our surprise. I was able to get her a leftover muzzleloader tag after the fact that we made the best of. She missed one buck the 2nd day we were out. The following day she passed on a couple 2x2 bucks. I found this buck shortly after bedded and the pursuit was on. Took us 2 hours to get up to the buck and get her in position for the shot. She killed this buck at 190 yards. Broke his G2 tumbling into the canyon below. She was a trooper and got herself a great first deer.

1 pointYou know what, Lance, I agree with you! My updated review would be "just OK". Big Al's (Junction) was VERY good back in the day. In September of this year though, I was on a little Southern Utah hiking road trip and of course had to stop in. I was definitely struck with the feeling that it's shine had worn off. Seems like sometimes as/if places change hands or if they just evolve over time, that places that used to be great start to slide towards mediocrity.....

1 pointIt was a great year for my two kiddos in NM. My 16 year old son had his first ever archery hunts for both deer and elk. He was able to harvest this bull that I called in to 24 yards on September 6th. The following weekend, he was able to make an awesome stalk on a group of 3 bucks and chose this buck out of the group. He pinwheeled him at 34 yards. Next, my 12 year old daughter was able to harvest this coues buck on her youth hunt in the sw corner of NM. My kids have been blessed this season!!!!! Looking forward to hunting season 2025.

1 pointNo issues. One sits on a 340 Wby that is 8#. The 3-15s are great. The one 4.5-22 I have is not my favorite simply because it only has like 6 mils in one revolution . I did make a 1050 yard shot with it but I hate turning past one revolution.

1 pointWell it’s a couple days before the last day but I’m interested to know how it went! This dreaded nonresident is finally allowing himself to get excited. Plan A, B, and C is figured out with lots of other plans and ideas waiting in the wings if need be. I just need December 15th to get here… Thank you to those who have reached out to me. It’s been a lot of fun just talking hunting!

1 pointThe ranchers where we were this year found two nice bucks, maybe 105 and a 110 type buck, dead, locked antlers together. They found them in the summer, looked like they had died rut of 2023. I would have loved to have been able to get those back home. Thought about how I could make that happen like the whole week but the only way was to smuggle them or clean them up all the way and put two tags on them, so they are still there in the yard... So cool though. The antlers go together like a puzzle, it was pretty mindblowing how they would not come apart even though they looked like they should easily disconnect at any moment. If you yanked real good on them you could have got them apart pretty easy I think, but that would be dumb Both a little broke and both had a couple extras.

1 pointMy friend at superstition creations uses a weasel or ring-tailed cat for his forms. He will cut the head off sometimes and change the position of the head , turn it a different direction etc...He has done a few that I know of. He has one he's doing for me now .I got in unit 24b.. This is him..He weighed about 35 pounds. Has a damb nice winter coat. Crossbow kill at 15 yards. I had to back up away from him to get a shot that wouldn't cut him in half. First one I ever saw. Now I see them often up there .

1 pointManSo I’m a bit late sharing this so with some down time at work figured I’d share my 2021 solo coues hunt! After years of archery hunting , never putting in for in for rifle hunts and always helping close friends of mine on rifle hunts and always saying to myself that I’m gonna put in for a rifle tag because how much fun I always have on them , I finally put in for a late November tag and drew . With having to move two house into one in the beginning of October and the holidays in a new home ,It didn’t give me much time to scout for this hunt. A good buddy of mine pointed me into a area he had been luck in the past . After spending all of opening day glassing up smaller deer and other hunters it felt there wasn’t much in that area that wasn’t being hunted hard and deer that weren’t pushed all over the place . I went back to camp and regrouped and made a different game plan for day 2. At first light I was on this little hill that gave me a huge view into some great wilderness area . With in 20 minutes I glassed up 4 does 2 miles away on this grassy hill side. I watched them for a good hour off and on as I tried to glass other areas trying to find a good buck. Coming back to them every 10 minutes to finally see 4 deer turn into 7 . At that distance was hard for me to see if there was antlers on any of the deer , but seeing a deer stand in front of a small tree and the tree shaking up and down for about 10 minutes and then seeing another deer chase that deer off I knew there was a decent buck in there. I grabbed my pack and decided to make a move on these deer knowing that they’ve been in the same area for almost 2 hours now. I decided to go strait at them . With 3 different washes and big hills to keep track of these deer as I was making my way to them . I’d cut down a hill ,cross a big wash ,bush whacking my way up another steep hill glassing them back up . After about a 2 hour journey , sweating and breathing hard after cresting this hill I thought I wanted to be on to shoot from I put my binoculars up right when this buck was bedding back down between two small trees . I ranged him at 800 yards a lot further than I’m comfortable shooting at. With one more hill in between us I ranged the tip of the hill at 400 yards . That would put me in a distance I’m comfortable with . Knowing he just bedded back down I made the cut down the hill across another wash and back up to a rock outcrop that would give a great view to where he bedded down . Got to the rock outcrop and saw his antlers shining through the small tree he was laying behind. My head started pounding as I saw the uniqueness of this bucks antlers. Got ready and was able to calm down and get comfortable while I waited for him to stand up at 380 yards . He stood up and buck fever kicked in and started to get shaky again ! I pulled the trigger with excitement and shot just above his back . Knowing I screwed up and pulled to hard , I reracked another round found him standing 5 feet from where he stood up , I put my crosshairs on him and took a deep breath and on the Exhale gently squeezed the trigger. After the recoil of a 300 win mag wasn’t able to see him go down. With doubt cause of my first shot , I made the long walk that seemed forever over to where he was to see him pulled up in the bush ! After breaking him down and getting my pack loaded it was start to get dark . I thanked god for this moment by myself and never felt a more rewarding hunt !
