5 pointsOk, my New Mexico solo 2024 mule deer hunt is in the books, link to story coming soon. Now for the 46A, and B hunt. We went scouting and saw a medium sized 3 x 3 the first evening on the Cabeza, and a large bobcat. We really didn't glass a whole lot we were just trying to get familiar with the roads as we didn't have a whole lot of time. I'm sure if we had spent more time glassing we would have found more deer. We do have an area picked out for opening morning.

3 pointsThis year my three youngest sons all drew a youth deer tag. We spent a lot of time shooting and preparing for the hunt. As the hunt grew closer, it was fun watching the excitement in my boys. For two of them, this was their first time on a deer hunt with their own tag. Much to my wife's dismay, there were a lot of youtube hunts on TV in the house leading up to the hunt. Opening morning found us on our go-to knob glassing a large bowl. This bowl has always been good to us. Fairly quickly we were picking up deer everywhere. About 20 minutes after seeing light, my buddy spotted a group of bucks and I was able to find the biggest in the group. Nothing crazy but a decent 3x2. My older son took a look at him and decided since he was feeling super sick, he would take that buck. We got him set up quickly behind the 7 PRC and he made a great shot that put the buck down quickly. I was proud of him. After we packed that buck out, my son decided it was best for him to go home. My buddy loaded him up in my truck and drove him all the way back into town. Good friends like that are hard to find. Second day I had another buddy join us. He brought a couple young men with him who had never experienced hunting before. They did awesome and are hooked. While driving to a spot, we spotted a little sporky and my youngest son immediately wanted to shoot that buck. We tried talking him out of it, but he was determined that was gonna be his first buck. We quickly hiked up and around a hill we thought he'd be headed to and were able to cut off the group of deer he was with. We got him set up on a tripod for a fast 100 yard shot. As soon as the buck started to come up the hill opposite from us, I told my son that was him and to take the shot as soon as he stopped. The buck paused long enough to look back at us and my 10 year old son made an absolutely perfect shot and the buck ran hard for 30 yards and piled up. The bald, grassy hill gave us the perfect show of the whole event. My son could not be happier with this buck. He is very proud of it. Hahaha. On the third day, we went to a hill where we spotted a group of bucks at last light the night before. We immediately picked up the bucks at first light. At 750 yards, we wanted to cut the distance. So we left my youngest son and my buddy on the hill to keep an eye on them. My son and I made the fast move and cut a few hundred yards off. As soon as we topped over the shooting knob I saw 20 big bushy whitetails flagging at us as they ran straight up the hill away from us. I was shocked. The wind was in our face. We were under the hill from them and they could not see us. I have no clue what spooked them. But my son didn't panic and laid down behind the rifle. I ranged and dialed. I got my BTX set up and found the biggest buck in the group and walked my son into it just before he topped over. My son made an amazing 512 yard shot and the buck dropped without taking a step. Game over. The practice paid off for each of my boys and I was a proud papa.

2 pointsNot to mention how many meals coyotes steal from the lions making them have to kill again. Since Coyote contests have been banned it's already been detrimental. I can't imagine how bad it could get it dogs were taken off the table.

1 pointI have not seen any discussion about the proposals to be bantered/approved at this Friday's AZGFD commission meeting. https://azgfd-portal-wordpress-pantheon.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/21115346/AZ-Hunt-Recommendations-Nov-20-2024.pdf

1 pointI read on the back of a cereal box once lions kill big game every week. Whether they consume the animal or bury it. The article stated that the lion will intentionally stash a kill so the scavengers and coyotes in the area will be a few days behind the lion on a kill so when they kill again and actually eat it they aren’t pestered by the other rascals in the area they are on the previous older kill. my first thought was they sacrifice a mule deer to eat Coues bucks in solitude.

1 pointWhere you are wrong and shows you don't know what you're talking about is you think these animals are scared for their lives. I've seen lions and bears falling asleep up in the tree with dogs barking below them. They have no idea they are in any danger and they get shot and die 5 seconds later. You can disagree with it but don't act like you know anything about it. It is by far the most productive way to keep lions and bears in check so if it is banned don't cry about not having as many deer or elk to hunt.

1 pointI had a fierce Carbon rogue in 6.5prc I bought from Cabelas in Glendale. It was the WORST rifle I’ve ever owned. I couldn’t even chamber a factory round in it, a gunsmith told me the chamber was way shorter than SAAMI and crooked. sent it back to fierce, they said it was perfectly fine and to find a new smith. So the gunsmith chambered a round and fired and it locked the bolt closed. He recorded it and the gunsmith chambered went back to fierce with the video. 4 months later I got it back with a new barrel, couldn’t get it to group and went back to a gunsmith. This time it had a smooth bore, so it went back again, 3 months later it came back with a new paper target allegedly from that rifle. Yet no one I knew could get it to shoot. So it went back again. long story short I got the rifle back after 4 more months and sold it back to Cabelas. I WOULD ATAY AWAY FEOM THAT COMPANY! JMO

1 pointMy brother in law dropped this guy at 75 yards this morning. Not a giant but he was happy to have him.

1 pointI didn’t get a tag and neither did my brother so we turned our attention to two of my nephews. I wasn’t able to be out opening day but my brother and his step son got to 150 yards of a heavier antlered 4x4 and he took one shot and dropped him. This was his step son’s first buck. On Sunday, we watched another 4x4 bed down and walked my brother in law and nephew into his bed and my nephew was able to make a great shot and filled his tag. Now, we have 5 adults with tags left to fill. 3 of them are able to hunt the whole time so hopefully they are successful this week. I can’t wait to get back out Friday afternoon and help out. I absolutely love the desert.
