5 pointsDrove up to Heber this afternoon, saw a lot of weird clouds east of us hit the downhill at Ord and hit wind and a microburst that ripped tree limbs, rocks and sand off the hill in front of me and slammed it onto my truck at 65 mph… 10 cracks in the windshield. Between Star Valley and the rim, rain so hard speed was reduced to30 mph with dozens of drivers pulling off. Got up top and sprinkles . But, it’s rain.

3 pointsI compared them side by side along with Meopta 15s. We were looking at a windmill about a mile away. All three of us ranked them as 1rst Swarvo HD 2nd Meopta 3rd Swarvo non HD All 3 were excellent. Very slight advantage to the HD. Noticed the color was more blue on HD than Meopta and objects appeared slightly larger than Meopta. Not sure how old/used the non HD Swarvo were. (Also, my eyes are pretty old but the other 2 testers were teenagers at the time. )

2 pointsI had Hunter come out to my place in Mesa. He diagnosed the problem with my DEF system. Had to order the part, which shipped from Michigan. He took care of the ordering and picking up. Came back out, got my truck running without codes. Truck was only down for a week. Very nice guy. Good communication. Knowledgeable mechanic. Likes to talk hunting. Thanks Hunter. Still no codes 😁

1 pointLast year on my Colorado trip I caught a 26" 10 lb brown trout on the fly, I went back this year thinking I would end up disappointed and never top that fish... but God is good! caught this almost identical 26" 10 lb Rainbow on the fly, 100 ft from where I caught the big brown last year! I need to give full credit to my nephew who is a fly fishing guide in Colorado. If any of you are looking for a great guide and trip, message me and I'll get you in touch with him.

1 pointI was curious about everyone's opinion on my bonus point situation. I was drawn for Desert Bighorn in 1991 and successful. This was the first year of the bonus point system and I had the hunter safety bonus point when most of the applicants didn't. I was 17 at the time and it was my first time applying. Ever since then, I have been applying for the Rocky Mountain tags. I've had one less than max points for 32 years now. I have recently noticed that there are currently only 2 applicants that have 35 pts and I am in the the 34 pool with around 120 other hunters. My question is, do I have a chance at drawing or do you think that most hunters in my pool are in the same situation...were they drawn in 1991 as well, and everyone is looking for that Rocky tag?

1 pointI finally get my bear back from the taxidermist and on the wall. It's not only a great looking bear, but the mount is superb! The cape on this bear is full and nearly flawless, and a pretty chocolate color. Very happy with it I called in this bear at first light and shot it at 50 yards as it was exiting stage left. It took off so fast I thought I missed! Especially after not finding any blood where it was or ran to. It ducked into a brushy creekbed. I had to go look for it! The creekbed was 40 feet deep and was dry. When I got to the sandy bottom, I still hadn't found any blood. I walked to my left a bit, then saw some blood drops! Walked a little further, around a bend in the creek, and there it was, lying dead on its side! My first solo bear! I couldn't hardly believe it. It was a good sized boar. I had to drag him to some shade to field dress it, was all I could do to drag it a few inches at a time. After field dressing it, I saw that the shot went through both lungs. I had met a couple of other guys bear hunting nearby, who offered to help me if I got one down, since I was hunting solo. With the bear in the shade, I hiked back to my Ranger and drove out looking for those guys. Luckily, I found them close by, so we went back to the bear. Using the Ranger winch and a huge tow strap those guys had, we carefully got him up to the Ranger. It took the three of us 2 hours! They couldn't believe how nice the bear was, the coat was full and gorgeous. We doubled a tarp under him and secured the tow strap around it's chest behind the front arms. Those guys did the hard work of guiding the bear up the steep banks and keeping the tarp under it to protect the cape. I just worked the switch for the winch to pull him up out of the creek. 😎

1 pointThis point creep is getting ridiculous. I have 8 pts and that was enough to draw the archery Kaibab hunt last year. Looking like it wasn't enough this year. Was counting on it since the whole family got skunked on elk tags this year.

1 pointHey all, Hey All, wanted to pop back in here and not completely be “that guy”. Over recent years you have entertained my questions as failed draws and new information led me all over the place regarding units. Last year I finally drew a third season tag in one of the NM border units. Had an absolute blast, seen a number of deer and a handful of bucks, one of which I think was what I was looking for but wasn’t able to get back on him. Spectacular country, scenery and a couple critters I had hoped to see but had never laid eyes on. What I thought was going to be a once every few years hunt has now turned into a “I have to go back every year” thing. To accommodate that, I have changed up again and exploring the lesser demand hunts with a lot of tags. I am very averse to crowds but the style of hunting may make it more tolerable than the crowds I try to avoid up here. Mostly I want to thank the number of folks on here that offered up suggestions, information and even willing to meet up for a day to show me around or help glass. For that I am greatly appreciative. Additionally, I will add that I learned what I think is some very valuable lessons. Things you all have the luxury of taking for granted, but the first time Coues guy or maybe northern guy has to learn the hard way. Nonetheless, can’t wait to get back.

1 pointHunting is hard, I don’t particularly think of it as fun I guess. Fishing, is fun. Hunting is work, in most cases.

1 pointI just got back from a long weekend in Iowa seeing family that I haven't seen in a long time. Long story short, my aunt (dad's oldest of his two younger sisters) has cancer again after 22 years of remission and, because of the treatment level last time, can't have treatment this time. As she says "I'm ready to go be with Jesus and my Buddy.". Her husband, my Uncle Bud, passed away 10 years ago this October. She asked me to come back and see her down in Pleasantville before things get bad with the cancer. I stayed at my best friend's house with his family in West DesMoines the whole time. He and I have known each other since we were 2 years old. We started at the babysitter together (my great aunt/grandma's sister), wen to preschool, elementary, junior high, high school, and college together. All the perks of growing up in small town in Iowa. After visiting my aunt and a handful of other family members from my dad's side, Jeff and I took off to a local farm pond he has access to near Winterset. Of course, I had to take my fly rod back with me. We hit the pond Friday night and Saturday. I caught two bass Friday night on poppers. The first one was my favorite because it was a popper tied up by my son, Jacob. I ended up losing that in a tree (placed a new order with Jacob on the drive home), tied on a store-bought popper, and caught a second bass. Jeff didn't want to try the fly rod, so he was hitting his spin gear. He caught a nice black crappie and "future champion" bass on a weedless spoon/grubtail combo before I convinced him to switch to topwater action with a floating Rapala. Jeff: "topwater never works here!". Me: "Bass are bass, no matter the pond, and topwater always works in the evening. Trust me." He switched and landed a 4-lb beautiful largemouth. We went back Saturday for a couple of hours before dinner with his family and we each caught a "future champion" on topwater. He is now going to expand his topwater arsenal and we're working on our next adventure. I wish I knew why these pictures upload wonky/upside down/sideways, but at least his Friday night pond monster is normal. I'm also realizing I need to convince my wife to let me get a 7-wt fly rod/reel for bass. Fingers crossed on that one I'm hoping to not have to tell her my 8wt bonefish rod will work for bass so I can get the 7wt! First bass of the trip, on a popper tied by Jacob Jeff's first bass of the trip, on a weedless spoon/grubtail combo. Jeff's pond beast on topwater. She pulled off two tail dances before being landed. My last fish, on a topwater Rapala Saturday night.
