I have never been much into professional sports. I have to admit, super bowl Sunday is normally my favorite day to javelina hunt as there is normally not another soul in the woods. My 8 year old son however fell far from the tree, especially with football. My dad's regaling stories of wining Kansas state highschool state titles and college career has had him enamoured. K state and K U have long been admired in our family as we still have quite a bit of family back there and nearly everyone has come from one of those two alma maters. Well being a young kid, anything Kansas and sports is good, so he began to root for the chiefs about 3 years ago. I don't have the heart still to this day to tell him that the chiefs aren't actually in Kansas. Much to the dismay of my Arizona family and my wife's family who are die hard Steelers fans, he has stuck to his guns and had bragging rights over us for 3 years. He is so passionate he asked if there was some way he could go see the chiefs in person next year. I thought this could be an excellent learning opportunity for him and agreed as long as he can figure out how to pay for his own ticket. The wheels in his head began to strip when he tried to figure out how he could buy a $500+ ticket on $2.50 weekly allowance. I told him to get creative. About a week later he came and asked if he could go shed hunting with me to earn some money. I agreed and told him any morning he wanted to go shed hunting just come and wake me up early and I would take him. Well after about 6 weeks of my daily 5am wake up call by him, he sold his first batch of antlers. Total profit $703. Enough for a bottom level ticket.

Took my boy and the dog, met up with a couple of friends and the pigeon shooting did not disappoint! Scooby, the black lab is a MONSTER. Scooch my Airedale got a heck of a work out. We worked on not retrieving until released. She did great. The boy did more shooting than hitting, but he had a blast! Great day over all and still as much fun as you can have with your pants on!

Excellent story good to hear he has a work ethic and congrats to you both. Keep up the good work. Not crazy in to sports myself but my wife's cousin played for the Steelers, the jets and Penn State so obviously we are Steelers fans, plus we are from PA. Her cousin is John Whitman, he played fullback.

Kinda the direction I was leaning. They aren't terribly expensive and the rig isn't that heavy. The whole reason I was asking is because I've seen a bunch of blown trailer tires out where we hunt and think there has to be a better option. Saw some offroad tires on a small fold out camper at an outdoor show and thought I would ask if that's a good idea.

They only allow you to scout 2 days before your hunt. I had the Jan B tag this year. Spent 9 days there looking for a giant. Passed up roughly 10 bucks a day. There is a bad big 2pt genetic there and lots of small bucks are plentiful. Saw (1) buck around the 120ā€ mark but he was so far out that we couldnā€™t get to him in time. I think this year will be a better horn growth year as last year they were droughted out a bit.

I would and do run light truck tires on my trailers. Like big tub said, trailer tires are not speed rated over 65 and most at 55. That's why you see a bunch of blow outs on the freeway with trailer tires cause they are going 85 everywhere. Not saying that's safe. But if you have the right tires that are speed rated for it you can do so without a blow out.

This is a great thread! I've only been to a handful of NFL games and I'm not sure exactly where bottom level is. In my limited experience, I would prefer to be 50 yard line and the middle height of the stands. I've sat low and you can't see $hit. He'll have a great time either way.

I didn't think you wouldn't I was just pointing out I think its weird some guys eat dove but won't touch them. I have a buddy that will shoot limits of coots for dog treats. Good way to have fun and feed the dog!

Note that on trailer tires, most have a max speed rating of 65 mph. Goodyear Endurance have something like 83 mph but they are pricey. Discount Tire recommends changing them every 3-4 years, which is what I do on our Travel Trailer. I recycle the old one onto the quad/utility trailers. I try to keep the tire covered and/or inside with the trailer on stands to keep the weight off. I have not had a failure of the Endurance but I have plenty with Carlyle, Green Ball, Goodyear ??? which have been discontinued.

This is great advice. You definitely want the tongue weight or your trailer will sway back and forth. It is dangerous like Bigtub is saying and it heats your trailer tires up which will cause all kinds of problems. If there is any sway at all you need to make adjustments. Typically increasing tongue weight corrects it. A couple of other things to consider are not to run your trailer tires for more than 5 years. If the date is 2019 or older(listed on the sidewall) I would replace them. They can have lots of tread on them but the AZ heat is very hard on tires and it isnā€™t worth ruining your weekend or worse by running tires that are weather cracked and can fail anytime. My guess is that your 5x10 trailer is a single axle, so a couple of new tires will run you a couple of hundred bucks and you will be set for 4-5 years. Trailer tires or LT tires will be just fine for you. Keep them inflated to max or close to max pressure and either should give you good service. Limit your speeds to whatever the tires are rated for (typically listed on the sidewall as well)and you will avoid lots of headaches on your trips. Enjoy your side by side and have fun!

This is why itā€™s BS: Prior to 2022 ranchers in 3A and 4B banded together and started complaining about all the elk on the ranch lands north of the forest boundary. The hundreds of elk in the juniper country are eating them out of house and home. There is legitimacy to this, there are lots of elk in places they hadnā€™t been for several years. AZGFD responds by creating a bunch of new draw hunts starting in July and running through December in 2023. Success is pretty high. Game and fish also runs a BUNCH of pop man hunts which are also pretty successful. Not even halfway through 2022, before the draw hunts even start, the ranchers decide everything north of the forest boundary has to be OTC. They threaten to lock their gates and deny access to ALL hunters if their demand isnā€™t met. Sportsmen contest this but AZGFD concedes and converts everything to OTC starting in March 2023. Carlisle had already locked his gates due to a dispute over a AZGFD violation years before. He had at one time given A3 exclusive access, but that agreement is no longer in place. Elkins locked his gates and refuses hunters access to remove the elk. At some point Elkins sells exclusive access to Big Chino Outfitters who has a similar arrangement on a large ranch in western AZ. They advertise hunts for $8500+. So essentially, the ranchers used their ploy to get OTC tags as a Trojan horse to create land owner tags that they can sell to the highest bidder. The have unlimited supply and the most generous seasons in the state. This was never about elk eating grass or drinking water. This was always about ranchers maximizing their return on the publicā€™s resource while simultaneously flipping the public the bird. That is why this is BS. Please write to AZGFD and ask them to discontinue the OTC Zeniff hunt area seasons until Elkins enters into a public access agreement.
