Most of us probably don’t realize it at the time, but once in a while we meet someone who is an example of the best our country can produce; someone who is a gift – the kind of person who changes lives in a positive way. That was my impression of John Petrello. I arrived in Sierra Vista too late to get to know him, but after a couple of visits I could tell what kind of man he was. Humble, soft-spoken, intelligent – someone most of us would not think of as a no-foolin’ black-ops professional. But he was. And he was proud of it, as he should have been. I never heard any details, and John wouldn't have talked about it anyway, but I suspect he helped arrange Judgement Day for some of the worst, most evil souls to ever threaten our country or our allies. We were both suckers for blued steel and walnut – classic rifles and calibers, especially Winchesters, Brownings, Sakos. Also Remington’s depending on model and caliber. The obituary states that John was a good man, who feared and loved the Lord. To me, and I am sure many others, he was absolutely that, and more. He was the kind of man you wanted to be as a kid growing up, and the kind you would want your son to have as a role model. He was intensely interested in hunting, shooting and conservation, and represented our community very well. His church and the military no doubt the same. As requested, donations in John’s Memory have gone to Gun Owners of America and National Wild Turkey Federation. I know John’s daughter is a hunter, and hopefully she and the rest of the family will find comfort in the sights and sounds and memories of a favorite hunting or glassing or calling spot.

Been scouting & hearing bulls in 8 until almost 8am. I'm sure as time goes on it'll get better. Camp is almost set up, & it's so nice to have a bull tag again! Lots of feed, water is not sparce, and the weather seems to be finally cooperating/getting cooler!

I've been catching an average 2 - 3lb rainbows and a few very nice tigers at Woods Canyon lake every Wednesday . Have had a few 5+ lb studs. (rainbows) going up next Wednesday with a great fellow from here. Then time to head to the reservation to start catching big browns, then big lake before the freeze. Great looking fish you caught. Weekends do suck. Thats why I work the weekends and fish middle of the week. Happy fishing

Went to Black Canyon and Willow springs lakes over the holiday weekend. Bumper boats too say the least!!! But we got on the water at daylight and stayed till the crowds run us off. Game and fish show a probability of 1 in 8000 chance of catching the elusive Tiger trout ( cross of brown and brook trouts ) Well we caught 4. Here's a pic of what they look like. We also caught a lot of 20-23" Rainbows. Amazing weekend.

Check out Great Hunter Skullz. I can't remember Sean's screen name here, but he and his son, Draysen Hatch (started it as a teen), do great work. I've had two done by Draysen and he does great work. They live in the Queen Creek/San Tan area. I'll even admit publicly that Sean is a good guy!

Spent all last week up there and started hearing bugles on Saturday and Sunday morning. Saw a decent bull layed up on my way out with about 30 cows. Going to be a good rut hunt.

Spent Friday, Saturday and Monday in 27 and never heard a single bugle. Saturday I finally found some bulls and they were still in bachelor groups and the cows I saw had no bulls at all with them. On Monday I was glassing as the sun went down and saw a small 6 point chasing 2 cows. Really weird as the different places were about 20 miles apart. Still have 9 days left 😁 Jeff

A few bulls were getting vocal yesterday evening. Saw a couple 320s and one that’s Probly mid 350s. All were with cows. One of the bulls wallowed for a good while. The rut is close.
