Good day Fellow hunters. New here.....with gratitude like few have had. Took what seems to be about a decade to get this tag.....started the quest in my early 40's...now in my 50's (just for this tag). From Idaho (lived here almost my entire life). I am old school......after a decent respectable Coues. Got my 30+" Mule Deer, a decent 6x7 Whitetail (up north Idaho near Canadian border) and a nice respectable 25" Blacktail in central California....but need to close this quest/chapter of my life and trust me I have been waiting. Few understand it.....heck I may even be NUTZ, but this was my crack at hunting our great lower 48 in my life. I got the credit card notice and hardly couldn't believe it. FINALLY!! Yes, I can glass like a fool..... Yes, I can hike miles in steep country... and yes, I can pack (still Bow hunting Elk and get one every single year). I cannot afford the opportunity to blow this hunt as you could imagine. 9 more years and I'll be lucky to hunt at all. I've lived hard like most of you...and that's why you do this. You see, its you vs nature....and I get it...fully. At any rate. I could use some help. Hunts Dec 15-31. Pointers to general spots would be honestly appreciated. Again, not after the biggest buck on the hill.....I'll leave that to the generations that I pray don't videogame their life away...rather feed themselves with satisfaction of hunting and gathering in the hills, friendships built on hunting teamwork, and possibly a great Dad that taught a thing or two.. Lets do this! Blake

This 2000 four wheel drive Excursion is in pretty good shape for the year. It is an Arizona vehicle free of rust. It has brand new wheels and tires on it, 35 x 12.50 BFGs, and Black Rhino wheels, less than 200 miles. It is equipped with fox racing shocks all the way around just rebuilt, I know they have been done right because I am the one that rebuilt them. I have new 2014 style mirrors still in the box, and a new 2014 center seat fold down console for it that still need to be installed. It has a new front right hub bearing assembly with new Dorman auto and manual locking hub brakes and rotor. New Bilstein steering stabilizers installed. Has led lights on front bumper and back as well as above windshield. AC works, 12 volt ac outlets do not work, cruise does not work, Just recently installed a new larger high quality radiator and high output alternator. The temp never goes above half on this thing and you never have to worry about lack of juice with the high output alternator. It also has a new oil cooler and the the entire engine cooling system has just recently been flushed. I also have some new engine monitoring equipment to be installed with a new gauge column and temp gauge. Passes emissions easily. 185.658 miles.

A little slow this year but brought a few home. Water temps were low and captain was having tough time finding warm currents. Really big water first day, half the boat was yacking. Almost all blue and yellow fin. Used spin set up this year and had a blast on that.

At one point of my life, about 20 years ago, i was asking myself the same questions about where i wanted to go. I had lived my whole life in Az. 44 years of it in Payson. Had a great life there. No complaints, just wanted something different and cooler. Through a strange set of circumstances i ended up buying 20 acres in Trout Creek, Montana. I drove from Payson to my place here 41 times getting my house built. 8 years ago my wife and i decided to pull the plug and move up to the Montana place permanently. It was the best decision we ever made. It is a great place to be. Although my first winter here had me questioning what i had done. But once i figured out how to handle the winter it really became easy. Havent had a winter like that one since. Actually the hardest thing we have had to adjust to is the length of days. Not the short days of winter, which arent all that short, but the long days of summer. It stays light until 11:00. You can work yourself to death. Or you can work a regular job and get off and go fishing for another 7 hours. We rarely get to bed before 11:30 in the summer. The elk hunting here is alittle harder than it was there. Not a lot of bulls but buying a tag over the counter and getting to go every year is nice. I've managed to kill 2 5x5s in 7 years. The deer hunting is great. Whitetail deer are everywhere. Not hard to kill a nice buck if you spend a little time at it and dont shoot any of the first 75 bucks you see. Lots of other hunting opportunities as well, turkey, grouse, bears, wolves, etc, all over the counter tags. Fishing nothing short of spectacular. Never know what you might catch. Could be a 5 lb smallmouth or largemouth. Or it could be a 30 lb pike or a 5 lb walleye. Or anything in between. And license and tags are cheaper here. I was a little worried about the job situation up here. Although i had semi-retired from my job there, i knew i would need to work. It seems that it is just as hard for employers to find decent workers here as it is anywhere. There are lots of work opportunities here. Cost of living is just about the same as there. Although taxes are much cheaper. Income tax is about the same, no sales tax on anything and property taxes are lower here. Before i left i bought a lifetime hunting license in Az. Great decision. Ive drawn better tags since i left than i got when i lived there. All in all we havent regretted leaving Az not even once. It was great for me but it was time to move on. Since we moved both of our boys have followed us up. They are doing very well at making their lives here and love it almost as much as we do. Sometimes you have to throw caution to the wind and take a chance. In the long run you provably wont ever regret it. And if you do, Az will still be there.

I would go shed hunting. Sheds are going to be where bulls go post rut and where you might find them on your hunt. This gentleman harvested this bull less than 800 yards from where I found the bulls previous years sheds

Ned Flanders the main guide thinks he owns that area. Be careful

Watch out for the "guides" up there that think they own the land

From what I understand public land hunting in Montana is much much tougher than it is in Arizona. I guess if that's a factor to you that's one you might want to consider. If you're going to be paid well enough and be able to take time off to hunt I would get the AZ lifetime license and come back here when you get lucky enough to get a tag but that sounds easy and real life doesn't always let you do those things. Some other minor considerations would be the amount of snow and salt and wear and tear on vehicles up there compared to down here, also do you and your wife like to garden if so that's also going to be harder up there. Lots of things to consider.
