This might ruffle some feathers but I’m all for kid’s drawing what ever great tags they can now because they will have zero chance in the future going forward. I’m fortunate enough to have my desert ram with low points. I chased odds not legendary units and still killed a B&C sheep. Just took a lot of work. My daughter is turning 10 this year and can start hunting. If she draws a sheep tag, early rifle bull tag, late December coues tag, or strip tag we will be fully embracing that given hunt and making sure it’s a memory she has for life. What’s to say a child’s memory hunting with family are not as valuable as someone that’s been putting in for years? At the end of the day it’s just luck of the draw. My dad and stepdad are in max points for antelope and sheep and they and I don’t feel they are owed a thing. Entitlement isn’t a good look for anyone. Good luck to all in the upcoming draws

140 tags and 25,000 applicants. Face the fact that it’s a long shot or don’t apply.

I drew my tag in 2015 with 24 points and shared my camp with a hunter who drew with no points other than Hunter ed. So hope should spring eternal. That is the beauty of the Arizona system. Odds are long but not impossible.

Dude complains about 10 year olds getting drawn their first year, then says his kids will never have a chance. Pick a side. I’m happy with the AZ system as it is. Everyone gets a chance and the guys that have been in it a while get a 5-10x chance vs the first timers if you actually look at the draw odds. 0 points as a resident and you have less than a 0.5% chance for almost all sheep hunts. And it’s less than .1% for nonresidents for all hunts right up until they have max points, they don’t put a dent in your draw odds. 30+ points as a resident and you have a 3-7% chance for all but the Primo salt river hunts. It’s still terrible but statistically it’s way better than the guys starting out with nothing. I’d be fine with squaring the points too, but don’t flip the 80/20 random/bonus split. Your kids odds of ever drawing a tag would virtually disappear if they did that.

I guess I don't agree with that point of view that just because you had the ability to apply earlier than someone else you deserve a tag more than them. No matter how you cut it there will never be enough sheep tags for everyone to get one before they die. Even if you did 100% to bonus pass people are gonna die before they get a tag. The only thing I would agree on would to have a rule in place that you need to have a minimum of 5+ points or something before you can draw. Atleast at that point you have some skin in the game and show you are dedicated to applying. You also have to realize game and fish is going to want to get the most money they can. Make it to where the new comer basically has no chance at drawing and no new people will apply. Make it to where no non resident can draw and they lose thousands of dollars of revenue. The way I see it is don't plan on hunting sheep in your lifetime. Play the odds game and hope for the best. If you draw, consider yourself lucky and enjoy it.

They do need to revamp the applications system. People should be able to add all species to a "cart" then checkout with credit card info once, etc. It's easily the most technologically unsavvy app system I've come across.

I have a Lincoln Navigator and Ford Ranger in the family both from mid 90’s with 250,000+ on them. My old man has a v8 vortec Chevy with 235k. You all don’t know how to do PM’s on trucks if you think 100k is end of life.

Nobody said their experience isn’t as valuable. All I’m saying is that the people who have invested decades and thousands of dollars should have higher odds than they currently do. We don’t have enough sheep tags to go around, it’s time to relook at the system for oil species. Other states are limiting non res, waiting periods, selecting certain species only, etc. I’m all for habitat and population growth. That’s one good thing AZ has going for it

I can remember getting emails like that sign in the 80's. Yup I'm old.

The odds difference between 0 points and 30 points is virtually nothing. It amazes me that some of you think a guy waiting 40 years should have no edge on the newbies. The system we have raises virtually no increased odds until you get to the bonus point pass. Nevadas squared point system is a more fair way for sheep in AZ. 40 years is a lot of money and time invested. A 10 year old who has drawn only because his dad applied him has little interest, zero time invested and should have much less odds than the person who has applied 40 straight years. Our current system gives very little to the long term applicant until you hit the bonus point pass. We don't have to pick a side, how about we improve the draw system. A lot of states are making changes for once in a lifetime species, but unfortunately Arizona can't even get the website to work correctly.

Go back to the days when someone could draw an elk tag every 5 yrs, deer tag every yr, and antelope tag every 15. Back when we had to pay up front and loss those funds for 3 months. The serious hunters will save up all yr to make sure they have the funds. The ones that don’t have the funds didn’t want it that bad anyway. Oh but wait, G&F wont get the millions of dollars in app fee. Never mind dumb idea.

Yep! It's either gonna happen or it's not going to happen! Just be ready when and if the time comes.

$200 and you keep the "scope" and bipod. Putting holes in the stock and that cheek piece really devalues it. Is that a generic clamp on break? Where are you located?

Theres still 20% random with my idea. What's not fair is a 10 year old non resident drawing a sheep tag their first year when we have hundreds of 65+ year old native Arizonans that have been waiting 35+ years. Other states are moving to a resident only option. Prioritize residents first and those who have waited longer. Our current system doesn't change the odds much from 0 points to 32 point then odds go up a lot once you hit the max pool. My odds at 24 points are no better than my 10 year olds with 0 points, thats not right. We either need to take more people off the top of the list or square the points. A lot of us will see our Dads never get a tag after putting in their whole life, what do you think it will be like for our kids, they have no chance.
  22. 1 point
The solution for sheep is residents only and 80% of tags go to max points 20% random. That or square the points like Nevada. You want to hunt it, wait like the rest of us.

Had a 2017 F250 diesel had the death wobble out of the gate . Ford basically blamed me for it for asking to have it leveled at the dealership . Traded it w 9000 miles for a 2018 Ram. Had a 1999 F250 diesel that had a crack a in the turbo, fixed under warranty. Then started burning a quart of oil per 1000 miles. Fordsaid that was normal for the Powerstroke. I had a 1994, and 1997, never burned oil. Traded it in for a Gm Duramax…. Ford trucks are dead to me…give me a Ram any day .

So it has been quite a while since I've been very excited about pulling the trigger on Coues buck. A few days into our Mexico trip this year my buddy and his friend glassed up this buck and took this video. Only the 1st 30 seconds are worth much of this video but you can see the weird stuff on the bases We spent the day looking for the buck from about 8am to about 5pm with no sightings, I wanted to give the opportunity to Rob or Paul if we could, but both said if anyone saw the buck they should shoot the buck if at all possible. At about 5:15 with just a few minutes of shooting light my brother glassed directly into the sun about 1200 yards from where the buck was last seen only to pick him up staring at us at 400 yards about to walk out of our sight. Here is where the story started, I was kind of a nervous wreck when I'm normally pretty calm. Well I made a quick/rushed shot but it felt good and I saw the impact in the front shoulder What I didn't realize was that I hit him Infront of the shoulder in the brisket. With the help of everyhone we searched until dark, the next day I had the cowboys of the ranch and most of my friends helping to find the buck. We tracked him with some minimal hair and blood for almost 2 days before we had to leave for home. About a month a go I got these pictures from the Rancher. I hate wounding critters, but I hate wounding and not finding them even more. It wasn't how I wanted it to all play out but a pretty cool ending to a crazy cool buck. I was able to make it down this past weekend and pick him up and do a little turkey hunting Huge thanks to my long time friend Rob for glassing this buck up and going down to pick him up with me. Also a big thanks to my brother for going with me and finding him at last light and letting me shoot.
