I’ve got 4 daughters ages 8, 11, 13, 15. They all hunt except the youngest as of now but she will be doing her hunters safety soon once she turns 9. The oldest 3 especially the oldest two have shot several animals already out to almost 600 yards. I think the most important part is NO running and gunning! Got to have a calm kid and calm animal so they can take their time and I always get my girls prone if possible which so far has been almost 💯 of their shots. I had my 13 yo (then 12) set up on 75-100 elk coming over a fence that had been pushed anywhere from 86 yards to 150 yards but they would not stop, kept trotting so we let the opportunity pass. She ended up killing one 2 days later but the last thing you want your kid doing is blowing off legs and or missing/rushing that’s a good way to get them discharged and create target panic. Practice is also key! I take them out shooting often and I believe what had really helped my oldest was shooting a lot of prairie dogs with a .17, it sure helped her pick up animals in a scope a lot quicker then her sisters that haven’t shot prairie dogs as much. You have to make it enjoyable for them too. I know sometimes us adults can get caught up in the hunt and grind. You have to be careful not to run your kid into the ground. Sometimes it means taking a morning or evening off but you don’t want them to look back on the hunt like it was miserable. One more thing like mentioned above they are definitely my favorite hunt of the year!

Good luck. The days of old cheap guns are gone, and not coming back. Politics isn’t trending in our favor and name one president even “gun friendly” ones in the past 30 years that has repelled any import restrictions or anything pro gun in our favor, for that matter?? They won’t even turn over M1Garand or carbines for resale. Everyone’s favorite clown, George W Bush had said he would’ve signed and renewed the Clinton era assault weapons ban if it got to his desk. Luckily it never did.

My dad pulled this dog out of the CAP canal behind his house. Poor guy was stuck there for 10 days it sounds like. He is not chipped, not fixed, and everything medically checked out fine at the vet. He is a younger dog, very well tempered and is very good with other dogs and kids.He loves to cuddle. We both already have too many dogs as it is and can’t take on another one. I would hate to see him have to go to the Humane Society. I’m hoping somebody here’s looking for a new dog. Enjoy the summer in the woods scouting. Cows should be in the same areas as late summer and hopefully bugling will be on still during the hunt. Agree with tomgobbler. It’s a blast. Getting you both looking at the same elk is patience testing. Practice off shooting sticks too, or whatever you’ll be using. Death grip/bog pod and a tripod has been gold for us.

That’s good they identified the guy…and really good it didn’t turn into another Sawmill fire started by shooting tannerite. If I recall nobody tried to put that one out either and it was off-duty LEO involved. I’m sure it was immediately called in though.

So it has been quite a while since I've been very excited about pulling the trigger on Coues buck. A few days into our Mexico trip this year my buddy and his friend glassed up this buck and took this video. Only the 1st 30 seconds are worth much of this video but you can see the weird stuff on the bases We spent the day looking for the buck from about 8am to about 5pm with no sightings, I wanted to give the opportunity to Rob or Paul if we could, but both said if anyone saw the buck they should shoot the buck if at all possible. At about 5:15 with just a few minutes of shooting light my brother glassed directly into the sun about 1200 yards from where the buck was last seen only to pick him up staring at us at 400 yards about to walk out of our sight. Here is where the story started, I was kind of a nervous wreck when I'm normally pretty calm. Well I made a quick/rushed shot but it felt good and I saw the impact in the front shoulder What I didn't realize was that I hit him Infront of the shoulder in the brisket. With the help of everyhone we searched until dark, the next day I had the cowboys of the ranch and most of my friends helping to find the buck. We tracked him with some minimal hair and blood for almost 2 days before we had to leave for home. About a month a go I got these pictures from the Rancher. I hate wounding critters, but I hate wounding and not finding them even more. It wasn't how I wanted it to all play out but a pretty cool ending to a crazy cool buck. I was able to make it down this past weekend and pick him up and do a little turkey hunting Huge thanks to my long time friend Rob for glassing this buck up and going down to pick him up with me. Also a big thanks to my brother for going with me and finding him at last light and letting me shoot.
