I went to willow to fish yesterday. Gate was still closed. We hiked in from 260, lake was 98% frozen over. We fished a small melted area and caught nothing.

Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.

Well weather was not ideal on the hunt and for the first time hunting this mountain range I felt like every where I went there was someone else there. Bigger deer were not being cooperative and only 80" -90" deer seemed to be poking their heads out. The end of the hunt I was able to turn this buck up and decided to take him. Can't pass up some good eating coues in the freezer.

So 96 hr drive from Pa to Ca, you must be stopping at night. Pick up small chest freezer . Plug in over night while you stop or if you have newer truck with inverter plug in while you drive. And I agree with the advise don't freeze just keep real cold and don't get it wet. But on a serious note it wasn't my wife , it was half a buffalo to New Jersey in 2 canyon 145qt chest, frozen solid before we left, 10lb dry ice, never opened . Drove 48hrs with naps. It was still frozen solid. Get a legit Cooler , not budget. You will pay either way. My 2 cents. Have fun

Don't know if the gates are what decide if it's closed but gates are open on 300 at woods canyon and people are going in and out. Can't imagine woods or willow would have any ice. Been pretty warm last week or so and gonna be smoking hot for the next couple days.

Fresh killed whole bison. 14-16? Hours from home. Used the hide as a cooler and bought ice every once in awhile as I went. Stayed cold all the way home. Sprayed some bloody water out the back that pissed off some folks but my meat was good!

Frozen Water bottles are the ice but when it melts you wont have water sitting in the bottom of the cooler

I brought back 150 lbs. Of flash frozen halibut from Alaska. Filled the coolers with fish and no ice. Approx. 36 hours later it was still rock hard frozen. I don't see the need for ice until you notice the meat thawing. I think ice is going to melt at the same rate the meat will thaw.

You could also wrap the cooler in a fluffy blanket. Its pretty much insulation. What part of PA you going to? Grew up there. Only thing I miss is the food.

use blocks of ice, not cubes, they'll last longer. Also, drain it whenever you stop for the night and again in the morning. That will keep your meat in the best shape. You'll probably have to restock on ice at least once

I've found a couple decent spots in 7E but know nothing about 11M, other than the elk I see on my way to work sometimes lol

Another option if pulling a trailer. My father-in-law put a chest freezer on the front of his flatbed trailer after a moose hunt in Alaska. He plugged it in via an extension cord at the hotels/camp sites he stayed at on the long drive home.

150QT should be enough, IMO. I vote for using dry ice and sealing-it up good! Should be good for 4 days. Check it at the 1/2 way mark to be sure, and add a little more dry ice if needed. Should still be frozen rock solid. +1 on ice cream stops for kids!

don't freeze the meat , do it when you get home.

Step up that game. I've done Ohio to Phoenix several times in 27 to 32 hours. With deer meat.

I put my wife in a 105 qt. She stayed frozen for a week. Seriously get one you can plug in while you stop.
