3 pointsGot it done with Coues Bucky #3. 3rd tag filled this year, this one in New Mexico.. not a giant by any means but any Coues harvest is a special accomplishment. Now into the San Carlos for tag # 4 to complete the year!

3 pointsIn his original post, Scotty27 asked to be pointed in a general direction. He didn't ask anyone to reveal their 'honey hole' or 'secret place'. My grandpa taught me to hunt and a few things have stuck with me. He said (paraphrase) hunting is not about antlers or horns. It's about creating memories and building relationships. He must have been right, because the relationship he built with me has lasted through the years. He passed 48 years ago - and those memories of him still bring a smile to my face. For most of us, this website has provided us with a platform to discuss our passion and learn to become better hunters. But the real benefit, at least for me, has been the number of great men and women I have met here (yes Amanda, this includes you). At this point, many have become my friends. I do not have a clue, nor do I care, what their religious beliefs are. These are amazing people that I would never have met had it not been for coueswhitetail.com My life is richer. For me, the big takeaway from Scotty27's post was that this young man was excited about going hunting with his dad. That told me all I needed to know about him. Some people collect antlers. Other people collect friends. Welcome aboard Scotty27. I hope you stick around. There are lots of great people on here. Just give it some time and they will rise to the surface.

2 pointsHello folks, Call it dumb luck, but I have the opportunity to take 4 Coues deer this year. Yes LEGALLY. I harvested this stud buck in Mexico in late January this year. That’s Coues buck #1 for 2022 I was also fortunate enough to draw a unit B San Carlos coozy tag for the last week of December. That’s potential Couesy buck #2 Coozy buck tag #3 comes from an any antlered tag in New Mexico’s unit 16 Lastly, I just got word that we drew a coozy rifle tag in Arizona’s unit 33. That’s coozy tag #4 Here is where it gets fun. According to SCI and Boones and Crockett, no one person has taken more than 3 coozys in one year, most of those coming from Mexico. I’m going for something that’s never been done apparently. My question. What would be a respectable buck in each of the 3 remaining hunts? The Mexico buck scores just shy of 118 Thanks Donkeyman

2 pointswhat he said. I felt so much pressure before my hunt, knowing I would most likely never draw it again, add in everyone talking scores, field judging etc. I was all wadded up. I about came off the tracks when I first saw the ram I ended up killing, and fortunately I was able to kill him the next day with my best hunting buddy with me the whole way Remember why you hunt, and that you are fortunate to have the opportunity to hunt an animal most wont. Enjoy the ride.....

2 pointsHey man, a line was crossed today and you didn’t deserve that! That said, when hunters are asked to possibly give up spots that they’ve taken years or decades to figure out, they can get a little edgy, especially with our hunting areas shrinking due to more hunters. Game and Fish regs do give good general starting points and with a couple scouting trips, you should be able to figure it out. Good luck to you and your dad!

2 pointsActually he just stated he returned from a mission, there was no mention of his religion. Therefore the individual assumed his religion and began to bash it. There is no room for that on what is supposed to be a friendly sportsman’s website. All other points were valid about sharing spots but the line was crossed, otherwise wearing a cross or having a fish in your car would entitle the masses to judge and criticize everyone’s religious beliefs. Last statement from me, we are supposed to be a friendly sportsman community.

1 pointWell both of my kids harvested their first elk last week. We were in screaming elk everyday. My daughter shot her elk opening day and my son on the forth day. Want to give some thanks to a family member and a good buddy for directing me to a few spots. Sorry for the sideways pic.

1 pointOne also needs to consider and be prepared for the emotions a young child will have after killing their first big game animal. I was lucky. I was kind of stressing it and my daughter walked right up, grabbed the antlers and said let’s take some pictures! Completely Shocked me.

1 pointNeither one of us are right or wrong. I said on avg. I’ll stick to that. You were ready to rock it sounds like good for you. Chef was right everyone is different. Just sharing my experiences. I’ve seen some guys really push it to a fault.

1 pointWifes cousin was an Allstate insurance broker for along time and said never ever go with Geico regardless of price. They aren't good if you actually have to file a claim. She said Progressive was good as was USAA but that USAA tended to get more expensive over time which we found out was true. We used Country Financial locally and so far is cheaper and very easy to deal with.

1 pointTLDR: Easy is a 4 letter word, hunted hard for 3.5 days w/o success, changed hunting area shot one at 350 yards. This was what I consider my son's first real big game hunt. He shot a mule deer spike 2 years ago, but we sat water for 2 days in a blind after the first morning of hiking when I found his pants were too short causing his socks to fill with burs. I knew an area chock full of cows, but decided to hunt another part of the unit first where I've been told there were cows. I wanted him to truly hunt, and not think all hunting was as seen on 30 minute TV shows. Got to where we'd camp the afternoon of opening day, found a travel trailer in our proposed spot. Decided to talk to them, it was a guy who had helped his buddy's son who tagged out at first light. Guy said there were a bunch of cow's in the area and it should be an easy hunt. Hunted the area Friday evening through Monday night with no success, lots of glassing and hiking. Lots of SxS activity and hunt pressure. We had seen 1 cow 1000 yards away with no chance to gain ground, 2 other cows were shot in the area Sunday evening, Monday night decided to sleep in Tuesday morning and drive across the unit to the area I knew there were cows, Hiking through thick brush, we spooked 4 cows we didn't know were there. Glassed till sundown, didn't see anything. Wednesday morning; back to the second area, hiked in a mile to our glassing spot with headlamps. As the sun was rising, heard a bugle across a canyon, another one behind us minutes later. I responded to the bugle behind us with a hoochie mama, he bugled again only closer. I cow called again, he bugled a third time even closer, I cow called. A few minutes later a raghorn 6x6 came busting though the brush 50 yards away, no cows with him. He looked around for a few minutes before deciding there was no cow and walked back into the brush out of sight (side note: I don't think he had any idea we were there, and I'm always amazed at their location abilities- he was able to almost pinpoint our location from 3 cow calls). Son saw a heard of elk across the canyon, 350ish yards away. 5-6 cows, a few calves and a big bull. We had to reposition multiple times and wait as the herd was stacked up with no clean shots. They finally fanned out a bit and he was able to shoot one. Found her, I quartered her right side, he her left. Packed her out in two trips, Processor weighed 150 pounds including bones in the quarters, don't know what the straps/tenderloins/organs we kept weighed. I think my plan of not going to where I knew there were cows was a good one, my son said he was real frustrated in not seeing any elk in our fist location especially after meeting the guy Friday afternoon who said how easy it was. He said he learned a lot the days we struck out, though he would have preferred to have shot an elk earlier in the hunt. I don't like the word easy, not just for hunting, but in general. Very few things in life are easy. Try telling a four year old tying their shoes is easy, or a new driver driving a stick shift truck is easy. Sure, once you get the hang of it it becomes second nature, but it's not easy to learn. IMHO lots of preparation and even some dumb luck etc... can make a quick, but not easy hunt.

1 pointExactly. Hunter ethics, respect and consideration of others there’s always other places and ways to hunt
-
1 pointI agree. Fact is public land is just that. Its lazy to sit on somebody else's work but by no means illegal. First come is how it works no matter what. If somebody is there first you leave and go to plan B.

1 pointThe same people that abused trail cameras to the point where they got banned will be responsible for salt becoming banned in the next several years. It’s ok Russ. You’ll still have a couple people that think you’re not the reason. I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around people thinking that what he does is ok.
-
1 pointThat whole hunt is a joke and all three (guides) are also these people have become hunters for the cash not sportsman’s for the wildlife.
-
1 pointWhat happen with Chad and Russ anyway? Weren't they partners at one time? Was TLO running the salts up there before Russ? I'll just keep getting bonus points until this mess clears up.

1 pointazsugarbear, very well said and Scotty27 welcome to the site. I wish I had good knowledge of 33 even though I live in Tucson but I've never really hunted it. Hope the others here can point you in the right direction. Best of luck this fall to both you and your dad!

1 pointShouldn’t bring religion or politics onto this website, unless you enjoy others abuse or opinions. Like grabbing a loaded gun from a strangers hand, sticking to your forehead and saying,” what ya gonna do”?
