Wow! God is great! I am still in shock! I found this buck 4 days ago. The very brief encounter sparked my interest and I could not get him out of my head. I knew he was a good one and continued to look for him for next 4 days. Finally, I found him again, put a stalk on him, and got very luck considering the country was so thick. He was actually with 2 other bucks. I almost shot the wrong buck because the other one was a 105ish! I thought it was him at first. Don’t get me wrong, I would have been tickled with the 105, but then he stepped out from an oak and I realized I was on the wrong buck. It all happened so fast. I set my sight to 65 yards and made a great shot and he expired within 100 yards. I still can’t believe buckfever didn’t bite me, but I was very calm until I walked up on him! I didn’t realize how big he really was. He ended going 121 gross and 117 net.

I was truly blessed again this year being able to take this buck. I had actually passed this buck up 2 years ago waiting for something bigger ( still kicking myself). He is actually not much bigger than 2 years ago, but did add a small point off his G2. I sat in my stand for 35 hours before this guy made his appearance. That is the only good thing that will come out of the trail cam ban... not knowing what's coming in, I wasn't waiting for a "bigger buck".

Had a great season. Went out 3 times. Birds flew good but not as great as last year. Had a bbq with all the buddies. soaked birds in buttermilk over night, rinsed, added salt, pepper, garlic. Put a piece of green chile and bacon. Put on traeger at 300 for about hr. Came out great.

We found this buck 2 months from opening day, then we found him a month later in the same spot. Night before the hunt he was back. Opening morning we had a little trouble finding him, coyotes were chasing the herd all around, one lone doe seemed to be following us, then she started running and 23 ears and 1 set of horns appeared over a knoll- dropped then crawled about 50 yds, an old ant hill provided a shooting lane without grass in the way. Shot was at 7:01 am - hunt over. I don't now much about antelope - I am very fortunate to have good friends help me - The hot scouting trips and helping the day of the hunt. Also appreciate all the help CWT members shared and offered! Great time- need some draw luck to have another tag in AZ- can't wait for Wyoming / Utah and New Mexico someday.

I enjoy the General Javelina hunts. It allows me to stalk with a bow and carry bullet as the backup. (4) Grey Ghosts out of (5) hunts, but all were taken with rifle or handgun; the one year I didn’t harvest was because I was so determined to take with a bow, I left the handgun at home. I pack lunch & snacks to hunt all day. Because those wiley piggies aren’t gonna be taken from camp, right!?! I glassed and walked and drove the Ranger all day—unsuccessful to find javelina. Driving back to camp at near dark, I found a herd of Jave 100yrds from camp! Quickly exited the Ranger, flanked the herd in the direction of their migration, and settled into my best Clint Eastwood handgun pose with the .223 Contender. Found the biggest one with my naked eye. It was walking with a stutter step. When I found it again in the long eye relief scope, I discovered it only had 3 legs. TRIPOD! Deem it unique or the weakest one in the herd, I decided it was the least likely to survive in the wild and double lunged it 75yrds from camp. The scar tissue on her chest where the front left leg should have been was healed and old. She must have had a ferocious defense to predators or the herd took care of her as their MaTRIarch. My wife thought it was too funny of a story to forget & insisted that Jave Sow be remembered… a rug with a story.

After 2 years of preparation everything came together to harvest the ram of a lifetime in Alaska an 11 year old monarch! Hardest hunt I have ever done both physically and mentally. My pack was 60 lbs for the first 6 days sleeping bivvy style wherever we ended up each night. Out of 9 days it rained, sleeted, or snowed 6 of them. Ram down morning of day 7 and my pack went to 100+ pounds hiking 27 hours over 3 days to get out of the mountains. Truly an incredible adventure!

I was able to put closure on my archery deer hunt today. Last Saturday I had this buck come in. I drilled him perfect right behind the shoulder. As soon as I hit him, It proceeded to hail and rain. I got out of the blind as fast I could to start following blood trail. Only made it about 40 yards before hail had covered the ground and washed all the blood away. For the next 2.5 hours it proceeded to rain 4 1/2 inches. I searched the whole time in the downpour but to no avail. I decided to head out and make a few calls for help. On way out to cell service, I barely made it out due to flooding. So I made my phone calls and tried headed back in with it still raining but flooding had overtaken the roads and they had been barricaded and closed. So now for the rest of the weekend the roads were closed and I couldn’t make it back in. I was just sick. Couldn’t believed what had happened. So my tag was filled and wasn’t going to do anything else but find this buck. Finally today, one week later, I was able to catch a whiff of a dead animal while seaching with a friend. Few minutes later he hollered and said he had found him. He had only went about 125 yards. I had probably walked by him 4 or 5 times with 20 yards and just couldnt see him where he fell. Bear had found him and chewed his antler points pretty good. Wasn’t much left of the buck. About gagged me to death cutting the head off. Velvet was mostly ate off. Bear had Chewed up eyeguards, ends of main beams and other points but I was happy to put my tag on a really great buck. Taxidermist is going to be able to rebuild points and put velvet back on him. Bitter sweet ending losing the meat but was able to recover him. Brian

Anybody have advice for a good scent-free bug spray? I was scouting in Unit 1 this weekend and the mosquitos were miserable in a couple of my favorite spots. I see some sprays that say scent free but I wonder if they truly pass the test of an elks nose.

not us.. we fillet the breast first and just wrap and eat like poppers once you get the bacon crisp. Put a little season all is about it. But if you like bbq go for it!

Mosquitos are horrible this year - I haven't been worried about the scent and sprayed 100% deet on 3 times (heavy amounts) and still got tore up not sure if my deet lost its potency. Will try the stuff above -

Does the DEET everyone uses really smell stronger than how a guy normally smells while out hunting for a few days? More of a question than a statement. Haven't considered bug spray spooking game.

If you want to go for broke add a little cream cheese spread to the bacon before you wrap and chunk of jalepeno as well as the bacon and green chili. Good stuff!

My first deer hunt. My dad and grandpa found a herd of 3 bucks that was unbelievable for the unit/area. One was truly exceptional, pushing 200" typical. Opening morning came and we found them immediately and close. If I remember right we were only like 150 yards away. My older brother pulled up to shoot the big one but his rifle, a .264wm, was jammed. He grabbed my middle brother’s rifle (.270 m77) and it just clicked. He grabs my rifle next, which was a Remington mohawk .243 that had a sawed off stock and was really short. He shot the big buck and knocked him down. I was 2nd up and shot the next biggest buck in the neck and he was down. The great big buck was kinda flopping around and my middle brother was trying to line up on the smallest buck (still a great buck). He had trouble finding it in the scope. In the meantime my oldest brother told my dad he fixed the jam in his .264 and was going to shoot the giant again. I briefly remember my dad telling him to stop when all heck broke loose. He pulled the trigger and the rifle exploded, i remember the barrel wizzing by my head. When the dust settled, my oldest brother was bleeding from both ears and was extremely concussed and my dad was bleeding all over his face. Me and my middle brother were fine but confused. After an eternity everyone gathered their wits and walked down to the bucks. My deer was dead but the giant was nowhere to be found. There was a huge puddle of blood and a bunch of drag marks but we looked all day and never found him. My brother and dad spent the night in the hospital when we got back to town. They both had a bunch of metal removed from them. My dad had the shell extractor burried in his jaw muscle. Crazy, traumatic first deer hunt. Turns out, the weekend before the hunt my brother went out shooting with a buddy that somehow mixed a 7mm mag round in with his box of shells. The bullet traveled a few inches down the barrwl and absolutely exploded the whole rifle. Lucky nobody died but dang…..that was a giant buck that got away. We scoured the country for years and never found him.

Wow that sucks. I'm glad I didn't have any bear points. Feel bad for you guys that do.. Maybe game and fish will grow a sack and manage based on science instead of feelings.

Yes and no…I was the guy in high school that always called my friends on snow days to go hunting. If they told me I was crazy I would always respond with “There’s fresh snow, everybody is an Indian this morning!”.
