2 pointsDoes it really surprise you, though? What surprises me is that some folks on this site and guys that I work with support Biden. Blows me away. At least they have stopped saying that the resident and his policies don't affect the price of gas.

2 pointsThis was not a popular opinion when I spoke my mind the last time this happened, and I don't expect to be popular this time either. I don't really care, this is how i feel about where we are as a society. This is non applicable to the majority of us on this forum. We have raised our kids to be in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, off-roading, etc. We have been involved in our children's day to day lives. unfortunately, this is not the norm these days. This generation of young adults is not our generation. We were raised with respect. We valued other people. We had both parents in the home. If we didn't, the one parent made up for the others absence. Todays youth is not who we were. They do not share the same values. The majority of us worked through school. We had chores. we didn't have 24/7 access to video games, smart phones, tablets, or the internet. My oldest son bought an AR from my friend when he was 18. It stayed in my safe until he was 21, when he bought his own safe. I trusted him with my life, and still do. I never have thought twice about the implications of him owning such a weapon. He was always driven. Always respectful. Always appreciative. He worked from the day he was old enough to. He has never asked anyone to help him, or pay his way. He had respect for other people, regardless if he agreed with them or not. He just graduated from Embry Riddle with a major in Aerospace engineering and a minor in computer science. He is what we all strive for our children to be. I never knew how much he appreciated how much I was there for him until he had to tell the judge when I made it legal and adopted him after he was an adult. Switch gears to my own biological son. He was always against the grain. Always fighting with anyone he could get a rise from. His mother played the mental game with him, trying to pit him against me, my wife, and my 3 adopted sons. I always(before my current wife and after) included him in everything I did. Hunting, fishing, fourwheeling, camping, etc. I coached his baseball and football teams. I went out of my way to make sure he was included in everything trying to counter the damage his mother was doing. To make sure he knew he was included and loved. I had custody of him, but she managed to do her best to pit him against anyone I cared about. Unlike my adopted children, I did not, and do not to this day trust him. He is unappreciative, unapologetic, self centered, irresponsible, destructive, and just not a nice person. He has a few hunting rifles that I got him over the years that he will never have access to. He is not an individual that needs access to a firearm. I've seen it in his eyes. Lets muddy the waters a little more. He has been in the Navy for just over 7 years. How do we say a person is not mentally fit to have these types of weapons, but can still serve, or vote? You can't drink, smoke, or gamble until your 21. The lines are very blurred between being a child or an adult these days. I agree with the few of us that not everyone should have these types of weapons at the age of 18. A lot of people do not mature enough at the age of 18 to possess a firearm at all. But, its still not fair to the majority of our youth who are responsible. What do we do? I have two perfect examples that grew up under my roof that make the case either way you want to spin the debate. Is rolling semi auto centerfire rifles into the class III category going to do any good? I don't know. Will it stop school shootings? Probably not. Is it worth talking about openly and having a mature conversation, absolutely. The guns are not he problem. The mental state of our society is. If we can't find a solution or attempt to tackle this head on, the left will force it, and they will win. Let the bashing begin.............

1 pointTony Mandile was a long-time contributor to this forum. He passed away yesterday morning from complications from COPD, Covid and an infection he got while at the hospital. His wife, Ellen, also got sick about the same time and spent time in the hospital, but is recovering at home. His family says he did not wish to hold a service, but I wanted to share with you all some more about his background. Tony went by the handle Outdoor Writer in this forum as well as other hunting forums. He made a living as a professional write for almost 40 years and he was a wealth of knowledge about the outdoors. I enjoyed my conversations with him and he will be missed. Tony and his wife attended some of our CWT campouts so many years ago. In addition to being a hunter, he was an outstanding photographer and he enjoyed cooking some excellent meals, which he often shared on Facebook. Many of you have enjoyed the book he co-wrote with Duwane Adams, "How to Hunt Coues Deer". He hunted and fished in 39 states and 10 Canadian provinces. He also hunted and fished in Africa, New Zealand and Mexico. Mandile began a part-time writing career in 1969 and has been a full-time freelance outdoor writer/photographer for 38 years. His 30-year active membership in the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) included three years on the board of directors. He also served on the board of the Western Outdoor Writers (WOW) and the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA), which he helped create in 2005. He was a contributing editor for ARIZONA HUNTER & ANGLER magazine for 10 years, and wrote seven years as the Arizona Editor for OUTDOOR LIFE magazine. Mandile wrote his book -- HOW TO HUNT COUES DEER -- with noted guide Duwane Adams in 2003, and the Arizona Game & Fish Commission selected him as "Outdoor Writer of the Year" for 2011. More than 2,100 of his articles and 1,300 of his photos (50 covers) have appeared in OUTDOOR LIFE, FIELD & STREAM, SPORTS AFIELD, CABELA'S OUTFITTER JOURNAL, PETERSEN'S HUNTING, PETERSEN'S FISHING, AMERICAN HUNTER (NRA), DEER HUNTING, ROCKY MOUNTAIN GAME & FISH, CALIFORNIA G&F, WASHINGTON-OREGON G & F, ARIZONA HIGHWAYS, NORTH AMERICAN HUNTER, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED, NORTH AMERICAN WHITETAIL, OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHERS BIBLE, PENNSYLVANIA ANGLER, ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPORTSMAN, WESTERN OUTDOORS, BOWHUNTING WORLD, SOUTHWEST SPORTSMAN, SAFARI, ARIZONA WILDLIFE VIEWS, ARIZONA HUNTER & ANGLER, OUTDOORS UNLIMITED, several books and a few dozen other outdoor, conservation and travel publications. Rest in Peace Tony.

1 pointIt's a male African Spurred, owned several. Proof? Look at the spurs. Males have a typically rounder shell on top, concave on bottom to aid in mounting. They'll wreck your yard, landscaping, irrigation, foundation..

1 pointThe demonizing of Law enforcement has emboldened the radical population. The ultimate problem is over population which causes more competition for status. The teachers union is huge and problematic for schools. They dont want to lock the doors and have guns. What happened to plane hijacking? Gave Pilots guns and Locked the doors. What happened when they banned alcohol? The criminals had a field day. And it made criminals out of honest people. When are we going to have common sense people laws, and enforcement.

1 pointI agree. Google African Spurred Tortoise or Salcata Tortoise or African Spur Thighed Tortoise and you'll see lots of pics and get good information. As an exotic species, it likely an escaped pet. They surprisingly good escape artists. They can bump up against fence gates repeatedly (slowly of course) and disengage the latch and they can tunnel out of enclosures. Then they're off to the races! (Again, slowly). Someone may be looking for it. Or someone may not be looking for it if they either don't know it's gone or aren't sad to see it go. They aren't bad pets and can show some personality but they can dig a lot and, as Sky Island Junkie said, they get HUGE. If you can't find the owner you could make a pet out of it or maybe call the Phoenix Herpetological Society to see if they have any suggestions. https://www.phoenixherp.com/ If your family wants a tortoise but don't want the commitment of a Salcata maybe consider adopting a Sonoran Desert Tortoise through AZGFD. They are smaller and are a native species and can't be released to bolster wild populations because they can introduce diseases that can rage through wild population. https://www.azgfd.com/wildlife/nongamemanagement/tortoise/captivecare/ Good luck and let us know how this turns out. -Jimmer

1 pointThese same people fully support shipping lots of guns and weapons to Ukraine for it's people to defend themselves, but not their own country. With our tax dollars by the way. Think on that....

1 pointRest in Peace Tony. for those interested, I posted more about his life with photos in the Memorial section of the forum.

1 pointGiving up your rights wont help or work in the long run. Some say we can give up semi autos? So when the next nut case uses a shotgun loaded with buck shot your going to give up those to? Oh and he had a revolver in his waist so we are taking those to? And when the only thing thats easy to get is your deer rifle your going to give those up now?The tool isn't and shouldn't be the focus or this will repeat its self over and over again moving from tool to tool until your rights are gone. The next bill HR 117 will make you a felon if your guns are stolen and used in a crime, they want new york/chicago guns laws where you cant get a permit and you need their permission to even buy it. They dont want school security or to focus on the criminal just you. The worst school shooting in the world happened in russia sept. 1 st 2004 and they killed 330 people, in a country where the citizens dont own semi auto rifles or handguns but the terrorist obtained them. The fbi just stopped a terrorist trying to help more of them come through our excellent border security with a plot to harm mr bush. Take the time to study Israels school security they protect their kids instead of leaving them to the wolves.

1 pointCat….lots of things you mention are considerations! As an educator I see it every year! Anti-bullying week! All the sudden, teacher teacher Johnny is bullying me! Okay let’s go up to the counselor and see what’s going on!!! No let’s not I was just kidding!!!! Many many times the “bullied” are the bullies! Of course not always the case! There is a LOT that goes on at school….all levels! First you arrive at school and guess who has already been on campus for 30 minutes? The kid who’s parent(maybe) had to be to work At 7:00 and didn’t wanna leave them at the bus stop at6:30am! Chances are that kid has few friends and is behind in school! Free breakfast….yep and guess which kids are in there? The ones that are living in foster homes, with grand parents or parents on welfare! And guess what, they eat the little box of cold cereal and throw the rest in the trash! Bell rings and anywhere from 15-30 kids show up late anywhere from 10-30 minutes late! There’s a good chance they aren’t that successful in school and really don’t like 1st hour! Usually blame it on mom! Lunch…..kids hang out with the kids they like but on the computer attendance program Johnny’s parents have a restraining order on Jimmy because Jimmy introduced Johnny to pot last week at the skate park and there’s 300 kids at lunch and the teachers on lunch duty need to keep an eye on them! While keeping them from running on the outside tables, off their cell phones, not vaping and the 20 girls who went into the bathroom at the same time from smoking pot! Plus the jackass boys from trying the latest TikTok challenge of busting all the soap dispensers off the wall! Finally, school is out, parents lined up around the block in the parent pickup zone! Most of those kids come from the “successful “ homes and their parents don’t want them riding the bus because it’s too harsh for them to handle! So guess who’s waiting for the last bus to pick them up? Yep, low income kids that live way out, go home to sometimes no running water, no computer or internet to do homework and they usually come to school the next day wearing the same clothes! Lots wrong out there! Lots of kids coming from broken homes and honestly $hitty living conditions! And education system needs a serious internal gut check! Education was never intended to replace parenting! Sorry…….long year!

1 pointAnyone that thinks paying the communist ATF money to register a firearm so you can exercise a right is out of their damm mind. Keep giving your rights up and we will soon be Canada. That's right, Brandon is now coming for your 9mm guns. Should those need a stamp too since Brandon thinks they blow lungs out of your body?
-
1 pointAlso in the minority here. I wouldn't be opposed to the tax stamp for an AR. But I also agree with edge and Roosevelt mark. Armed guards in schools, metal detectors and a tax stamp for semi auto rifles I could live with. Sometimes the right is as deeply entrenched as the left with not wanting to budge on an issue. This is one of those situations where something needs to be done and the above ideas combined are a good solution imo. A compromise is sometimes better then the all or nothing attitude that both the right and left have. Also, side note here. I think schools really need to crack down on the bullying. Some kids get ripped so hard at school they often feel like there is no way out for them. They are a bottle of rage that wants to be released, it's not surprising that alot of these shooters have this type of background. No it's not justified at all but when these kids snap it's not really surprising to me.

1 pointTragic situation. I've heard it said, if you fail to plan you are planning to fail. For those saying "what can be done?" This FBI resource is a good start. You can use "ctrl f" to find keywords if you don't want to read the document in its entirety. https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/rems-k-12-guide-508.pdf It's a 75 page comprehensive plan that someone put a lot of time into creating and IMO should be reviewed and implemented at every school.

1 pointThose who take active shooter are trained to engage the threat until he dies or essentially you do. No one knows how they'll act until they are in that kind of situation. And yes, God Bless BORTAC. This admin has painted them as demons but those guys put in the work so people can sleep safe at night.
-
1 pointAll the "what if's" and macho mentality goes out the window for the majority of people. Like Mike Tyson said... “Everyone has a plan 'till they get punched in the mouth.”

1 pointIn this image, the milky way arches over Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, Lee Mountain, Gibraltar, and Twin Buttes near Sedona. I had been wanting to make this night panorama for a few years, and finally spent a few hours in the dark. This is a blend of about 9 images for the starry sky, and about 9 exposures for the mountains taken about 45 minutes after sunset so some detail could be captured with less noise. The native file is about 27x54" without any enlargement. After a series of images to stitch into a long panorama was shot, the night was ended with this single exposure. The light on Courthouse Butte is due to the lights of the Village of Oak Creek Nikon D810, 24mm, f/2.8, ISO 6400, 20 sec.

1 pointThere is nothing better than my Moms Recipe cotton tail in hatch red chile! Growing up in Deming Nm I was spoiled to have hatch red chile at my disposal and there are tousands of cotton tails in NM Plus my cousins and I would harvest cotton tails all day making sure we cleaned them as soon as we harvested them thats key after that we put them in a cool and dry ice chest till we got home.soaked them in salt water over night to get remaining blood out. My Mom would step in and coat 2 whole rabbits in olive oil lightly pepper and garlic salt them (to keep them moist) add cubed and peeled potatoes ,one bay leaf ,2table spoons of oregano ,pinch of pepper and salt put in crock pot for 3 to 4 hours on low till meat begins to come off the bone once this happens take out of crock pot and begin deboneing the rabbit now you are ready for cooking the red chile 12 to 16 dryed hatch red chile remove stem and insert knife into chile pod and remove chile seeds this will make the chile not as hot just good flavor rinse chile and place in boiling water for 15 to 20 min ( at this point chile will be thick like bell pepper) take off heat set aside for 10 min to cool off remove chile and about 1/3 cup of the water that was used in the bioling .Place chile and water in blender and blend till smooth consistancy (strain to remove skin pices that won't blend and have a smooth chile sauce) lightly oil frying pan add 2 table spoons of flower and toast flower till it is light brown then add red chile and cook till red chile starts to boil add the potatoes and rabbit to the chile and bring to low heat let stand for 10 to 15 min. serve with fresh refried beans and spanish rice and home made tortillas folks theres nothing finer in the world .(I always look forward going home for the holidays and doing some rabbit hunting with the family back home in my mind while hunting I can already taste that red chile rabbit and tortillas
