13 pointsSo I’m a bit late sharing this so with some down time at work figured I’d share my 2021 solo coues hunt! After years of archery hunting , never putting in for in for rifle hunts and always helping close friends of mine on rifle hunts and always saying to myself that I’m gonna put in for a rifle tag because how much fun I always have on them , I finally put in for a late November tag and drew . With having to move two house into one in the beginning of October and the holidays in a new home ,It didn’t give me much time to scout for this hunt. A good buddy of mine pointed me into a area he had been luck in the past . After spending all of opening day glassing up smaller deer and other hunters it felt there wasn’t much in that area that wasn’t being hunted hard and deer that weren’t pushed all over the place . I went back to camp and regrouped and made a different game plan for day 2. At first light I was on this little hill that gave me a huge view into some great wilderness area . With in 20 minutes I glassed up 4 does 2 miles away on this grassy hill side. I watched them for a good hour off and on as I tried to glass other areas trying to find a good buck. Coming back to them every 10 minutes to finally see 4 deer turn into 7 . At that distance was hard for me to see if there was antlers on any of the deer , but seeing a deer stand in front of a small tree and the tree shaking up and down for about 10 minutes and then seeing another deer chase that deer off I knew there was a decent buck in there. I grabbed my pack and decided to make a move on these deer knowing that they’ve been in the same area for almost 2 hours now. I decided to go strait at them . With 3 different washes and big hills to keep track of these deer as I was making my way to them . I’d cut down a hill ,cross a big wash ,bush whacking my way up another steep hill glassing them back up . After about a 2 hour journey , sweating and breathing hard after cresting this hill I thought I wanted to be on to shoot from I put my binoculars up right when this buck was bedding back down between two small trees . I ranged him at 800 yards a lot further than I’m comfortable shooting at. With one more hill in between us I ranged the tip of the hill at 400 yards . That would put me in a distance I’m comfortable with . Knowing he just bedded back down I made the cut down the hill across another wash and back up to a rock outcrop that would give a great view to where he bedded down . Got to the rock outcrop and saw his antlers shining through the small tree he was laying behind. My head started pounding as I saw the uniqueness of this bucks antlers. Got ready and was able to calm down and get comfortable while I waited for him to stand up at 380 yards . He stood up and buck fever kicked in and started to get shaky again ! I pulled the trigger with excitement and shot just above his back . Knowing I screwed up and pulled to hard , I reracked another round found him standing 5 feet from where he stood up , I put my crosshairs on him and took a deep breath and on the Exhale gently squeezed the trigger. After the recoil of a 300 win mag wasn’t able to see him go down. With doubt cause of my first shot , I made the long walk that seemed forever over to where he was to see him pulled up in the bush ! After breaking him down and getting my pack loaded it was start to get dark . I thanked god for this moment by myself and never felt a more rewarding hunt !

Hope to see some of you there. The call is an aluminum calling surface in a Sweet Acacia pot. It has a matching Sweet Acacia striker with a Koa dowel.

3 pointsI've been learning Taxidermy for a few years now. The past 6 months I've been doing Artifical velvet. In August I took in this AZ OTC Bull. Unfortunately the original velvet was destroyed. When I accepted the job, I had no idea how difficult it was really going to be. Unfortunately the Bull had been left outside and the velvet had dried. I initially didn't think that was going to be a problem. WOW, I was Wrong!!! When I tried to get it off with my 3000 PSI pressure washer, the velvet didn't move. The pressure washer, literally had zero effect. I was shocked!!! On to plan B. I had to soak the antlers in a kiddie pool for weeks. As you can imagine, the smell was HORRIBLE. After 3 weeks, I was finally able to remove the velvet with the power washer. Unfortunately, the antler tips were in terrible condition. They nearly fell apart in my hands. Ultimately, I had to rebuild 5 tips. Once the velvet was off, the rack had to sit outside until the smell disappeared. This again, took a lot longer then expected. It took 5 months before it didn't stink. Once the smell was gone, the rest was easy. I think it came out really nice!!!

2 pointsFinished up one more call for the banquet. This one is a Vermont green slate calling surface in a Sinker Cypress pot. This wood was pulled from the bottom of the swamp in Louisiana and is hundreds of years old. The striker is also sinker Cypress. Hope to see some of you at the banquet on Saturday.

1 pointFirst shout out to members Hucker (and Ray), for coming out to help glass when i didnt even know he was gonna be there and Zackcarp for letting me hang my deer in his cooler. I love this website and i am thankful to be a part of it. Awesome guys on here, cant really even put it into words. Well last week i was horn hunting for mule deer, but sunday evening my middle boy Caliche said hed go out for the evening hunt so horn hunting took the back burner. Got to the spot and saw a dude walking up the hill and my heart kinda sank. Turned out member hucker and his buddy were also out there bird hunting and the guy walking up the hill was another archer heading to where we were gonna go. Stayed near the truck to glass but didnt see much. Headed out early the next morning. Got loaded up at the truck, said a quick prayer with my boy and headed out. Once at our spot i could see some black dots out in the distance i knew were deer. We got set up and it looke like they were all does, after awhile we saw a couple were small muley bucks, just then noticed 2 coues bucks coming in from our right. I looked at my phone an saw a text from hucker and ray.. "theres 2 muley bucks out there right now", dang Hucker and Ray came out to glass for me and i didnt even know they were there! We stayed long enough to make sure the big buck i was after wasnt around and decided to give chase. Everything was in my favor, clear path to where to start my stalk, the wind and a perfect little wash that led right to where the 2 bucks were standing. I was able to sneak up to 30 yards. Draw back and let loose, the buck jumped and ran 20 feet and started to hobble around for a second before laying down. I approached slowly to make sure, and he was already expired. Well i didnt know it but Hucker sent me another text while on my stalk "the big buck is out there right now!" Well... never saw the text and later my son was like i saw a big buck out there while you were stalking, i said how big? "He was freakin huge", lol oh well! Im happy and wouldnt trade in a successful stalk for my boy to watch at all, im stoked he was willing to get up early and go hike in the cold just to hang out with his pops. I called momma and she came out with my daughter and my new puppy she got me for Christmas for some pics. Meet Buck my new boston terrier pup. Hes now got to see 2 deer harvests and hes by my side all the time, love that little pup! Like i said, Bucky follows me everywhere...

1 pointSo i had the pleasure of hunting with my two older boys for the first time in 7 years. Both were competitive swimmers and missed most hunting seasons due to trips and then college. So after a long absence we hit the southern hills for a coues hunt. Glasses up two shooter bucks first morning and they slipped us on three different stalks the first two days. Great hunting though we were having a blast but starting to think these bucks had us beat. Third morning the wind was howling and everything seemed bedded out of the wind. We flipped to a side of the canyon that we thought would block the wind and just before 10am we caught them moving to beds. After some leap frogging to keep them in the glass and move to a shooting spot. The best we could do was 420yrds and we couldn’t get low enough to get out of the wind that was swirling around the top of the ridge line. My oldest got set up and we waited for a couple hours hoping it would stand up. During the time we went back and forth on the two bucks. One a classic 3x3. Most likely 85-90 so good solid buck. But we could get away from the old 2x2 with him. He was unique with great mass and tall. Big body and we just couldn’t pass on him. Yea the 3x3 would score better and look good but this old deer had to be taken. Finally we said let’s take him in his bed if you fell good. I know my son felt confident with his old 30-06. Not the perfect Coues rifle but he trust it and it shoots great. He didn’t have a BT so we were working out the drop at 420 and one of his reticle hash marks lined up good. So he went hot and let it fly. Deer came busting out. Shot was high. He found it again on the run up the to the top and fired an ill advised shot missing Unlike most coues I’ve hunted this buck granted him one last perfect broadside at the top. Reset he fired and the buck went ten feet into a prickly pear and folded up. Ranged 465. Double lung. Side note. Using new Sierra Gamechanger bullets. Went through and blew half a lung out a hole about the size of a quarter. Minimal internal damage. Nice bullet in the wind for sure. Couldn’t have had a better hunt with my two oldest boys after a long gap in the field. Enjoy the pics

1 pointWell it's that time of year again. If you're anything like me you spend most of your time thinking about the up coming draw. Looking over old pics and videos reliving past hunts. Staying up searching for new potential honey holes on Google Earth. Trying to figure out where to put in for ect ect.... I love it! It's also that time of year when I like to make youtube videos and share them with my fellow coues nuts on CW.COM. I just finished putting together a video of my cousin's 2020 Dec hunt where he got his biggest buck to date this beautiful 4x5. The hunt started off slow with us being fogged in most of the morning. It wasn't until around 10am the fog would finally start lifting. Shortly after the fog clearing we found his buck about a mile out feeding with another buck. We watch him for awhile trying to figure out if he was a opening day shooter or not. To be honest I was hoping my cousin wouldn't want to go after him not because I didn't think he was a good buck but because I didn't want to be done hunting so early. After about an hour the bucks ended up dropping down in a small canyon out of sight. Not knowing exactly where they went we knew our chances of relocating the buck was not very good but we still decided to go after him. So we packed up and a couple hours later we found ourselves overlooking the canyon where we last saw the buck. We spent the next 3 hours taking apart the canyon with little luck. Only finding 4 or 5 does and one small buck. We did glass up a 4 point shed which we later found out was from this buck which was pretty cool. Anyways just when I thought we weren't going to relocate the buck Dallas turned him up across the canyon at about 300 yards and the rest is history. Video link should be below check it out if you got the time. Apparently it's not as good as I thought because the last time I checked it already had one dislike with only 10 views. Let me know what you think. Is this video really worthy of a thumbs down or did a vegan just happen to stumble across it? Thanks!
