If you have ever packed out elk quarters on your back for miles, the recoil of a proper elk hunting rifle shouldn’t bother you. If you are going to target shoot punching paper get a 6.5 something...

After a couple years of frustration bowhunting these things I decided to switch over to the pistol. Decided to sit a water hole the afternoon of opening day and after 4 hours of seeing nothing but cows coming in I backed out spotted 2 pigs heading in the direction of the truck. Snuck into about 20 yards, made a couple quick shots and finally tagged my first HAM hunt Javelina. This guy had to weigh over 50 pounds. Looking forward to making some chorizo and also wanted to check if anyone has any recommendations of good taxidermist in the Valley? Preferably somewhere in the Chandler/Tempe area. I have always wanted a good Javelina shoulder mount and I am still deciding if I want to do a mouth open or passive mount.

Don’t worry he’s not actually selling it, just showing you what you can’t have.

Closed mouth Javelina mounts are a lot cheaper than open mouth. Unfortunately the open mouth forms cost 3-4 times more than a regular closed mouth. I used to hate open mouth, but have learned to really like them. Here's a few that I've mounted.

Yes, I know what my gun can do. Todd@ Southern Xpress Custom Rifles built it and he is one of the best rifle builders as many on here can attest to, especially the new muzzle loaders. He shot his Coues Whitetail a couple of years ago with a 375 caliber muzzle loader at roughly 568 yards, if I remember right. His friend videoed the shot and it was super clean. Deer was standing for a moment after, then just rolled down the hill. SunDevil is probably right about how long it may take, but I've been very fortunate so far. I'll just have to plan as though I'm getting drawn and start learning all I can. Last year was my first Deer hunt, and it was muzzle loader. Scored/measured 173 and looks very nice according to everyone who has seen it. Maybe I'll be very fortunate again. If not, still doesn't hurt to learn.

Data from lions wearing radio collars confirms the obvious need for lioness's to spend much more time hunting than do males. A lioness being tracked on her forays mainly in GMU 42, showed she was active from about an hour before sunset to about 9am. Her male counterpart in the same area slept in till roughly 9pm and retired at sunrise.

I love watching people try to figure it out every year, then it’s different every year

I would think .243 is plenty but whichever is more accurate and comfortable for you. Cat vitals aren't huge targets. And very early morning setup with calling before 9am is my $0.02 on timing.

The 45 cal muzzleloader with over 100 gr of blackhorn I assume by weight is no joke .It will make the shot no problem .I shoot a paramount pro with 112 gr by weight and a 285 .My buddy and I were out on the ham hunt last week and after we finished hunting we had to clear our guns and found a steel plate and his 50 cal with 150 gr white hots and a elr at 50 yds only put a dent in the plate my 45 shot right thru.

This was a fun thread to read while I took a crap. I’ve met a couple of awesome dudes in my short time on this forum. If you leave, great, no need to go scorched earth just cause someone doesn’t want to buy your rifles. Someone probably would pay your price, but I’d be surprised if they did now. Good luck sir

Someone buy this classic before I find some money under the mattress.

I definitely like both of them. Might just have to plan on mounting another down the road so I can have both. The last image I have of this one alive was when it barked/charged me with its mouth open, so I might have to do this one like that.

Since we are speaking hypothetically. Turn elk units totally primitive consecutive years and then allow standard methods consecutive years. For example, archery hunts traditional equipment only. Muzzy hunts no inlines. General hunts limit scopes to 6 power. Then watch the quality go way up.

this is one of the most ridiculous statements i’ve read. Would you rather have a good shot at killing a big animal once in your lifetime or a reasonable chance at killing a big animal every several years? Quality is down across the state but it is still there. You’ve just got to hunt a little harder now.
