Was hoping to hunt the last week of December, but didn’t have the patience! Ended up tagging out opening day on this unique guy.

I think Matt has a real point, but I don’t think Steve is necessarily the guilty one. Steve is good for hunting in general, and conservation too. But there’s a lot of flat brimmers out there pimping out every deer and elk on the planet. Brian Call, the Hushin crew, Aron Snyder, Zack Griffith, Dan Stanton, I could go on all day. Our wild places will go like the Buffalo herds if we don’t stop this. We are about to kiss goodbye OTC archery deer due to instagram onset hunters. Every year the draw odds get lower and lower, especially for premium hunts. There are hunters, and then there are customers of the outdoor industry, and we have to decipher the difference.

I hope you guys are a decade or two behind us on hunting losses. It's a heck of alot cheaper for tags for residents and alot of over the counter. Wish it was not so cold up there or I would convince my lady to move.

Great looking pups. Are the parents English or American labs? We had to put our female down in September. The family needs another lab soon.

The ORO has fired Chad Smith. The new manager is allowing a limited number of youth hunters on for free now. Not sure what all they are going to change. That being said the multi unit is the best example of game and fish and ranchers creating such a mess. The hunt started to reduce numbers in a area that historically did not have elk. And reduce impact on ranch land. Well, the Yavapai ranch is mainly the only ranch open. All others are locked down for the guides only. Allowing elk tags in 18b is dollar bills right in the pockets of the guide controlling the ORO.

150$ charge to drive to someone's house and help them recover a lock combo seems cheap to me. How much do you think a traveling locksmith should make an hour? I'd say atleast 50$ an hour for the tech, the company also needs to make money, that doesnt leave a whole lot of meat on the bone once you factor in fuel, maintenance, insurances, benefits. Welcome to inflation, shoot's gonna cost more, especially specialized services.

I did mine myself and ordered it on line. I would say on a scale of 1 to 10 the difficulty was a 5.

Depending on where you hunt, you may have made a very good decision! Congratulations on a nice buck! I will be washed out of the hunting grounds I know best before my coveted part of the hunt even begins.

    1. Private property rights end at the property line. 2. I don’t think anyone is contesting property rights. What is being contested is the rights to the wildlife on the property. If the owners of the ranch don’t want hunters on their ranch, that’s fine and it seems AZGFD is willing to accommodate that. Owning the dirt or the grazing rights doesn’t entitle anyone to the wildlife. 3. I didn’t see anyone propose saying what they could do on their land. However, there are plenty of laws about what we can and can’t do on our own property. The government tells me when I can have a fire, how tall my house can be, where I can put it on my lot, etc. All because my choices, even on my property, impact many other people. This isn’t any different. 4. There are lots of people working on corner crossing right now.

Private land rights should be upheld but… If the “conspiracy theories” are correct and they are closing it to prevent access and make it a “rich mans game” to charge extra money like the ORO ranch then I say horses**t!!!! And f that!!!

If the Nav Nation wants to eliminate access, then the GF should remove the tags from unit 10 just as they did with 19B when land barons closed access. ...screw the pay to play with state resources. Let the Nav deal with overpopulation of game animals if that’s possible in our state. Since the Nav’s have a casino, as with all other tribes that do, cut them off from state and federal aid as they are supposed to be self sufficient and sustaining once they get their precious gaming pact. Run your crap like a real business, rather than a government subsidized one.

I’m not saying that I have to have access to the Big Bo I’m saying as it’s already been established is the Game animals belong to the state whether they are on public or private land. Close it down if they want. But don’t close it down then profit from a public asset. Think that would be welfare. Chase all the game animals off it then high fence it to keep them out. Then they can bring in exotics and charge people to shoot them just like Texas.

Not funny but going back to the old AZOD board, my dad drew a late unit 9 elk tag. I mentioned it and that he had cancer and his hunting days were short. Delw privately contacted me and told me where to hunt and what to expect. I had not been asking for help but he stepped up and gave me some great info. That's what kind of guy he was. I miss his sarcasm and no BS attitude.

I remember several years back my buddy had a 12ae late tag and No deer down low. We went up top and filled by Jacobs lake.

That doesn't make sense as rifle tags are limited so they control the overall harvest %. Add more rifle tags and the % harvested with archery goes down. No doubt archery equipment has improved allowing much longer shots. This affects Coues deer hunting more than anything. Just wait till you get crossbows, or those dang airbows. I'd rather see equipment restrictions over tag numbers but that's not perfect either. Why not give traditional archers a longer season, we don't hurt anything The real solution is what Matt Rinella said, stop recruiting new hunters. The US simply doesn’t have the habitat needed to support the wildlife and hunters it used to.

Well I've been back for a bit now and to be honest I kind of forgot about this post. We made it to Kodiak the morning of 29 Oct by way of ferry from Homer. We met the transporter on the other side of the island in Anton Larson Bay the morning of 30 Oct. The weather that morning was horrible and I was hoping that it was not the beginning of shitty weather for the week. Fortunately for us it was not. We got to Larsen Bay, our hunting area, about 1p.m. and decided to go for a hike and get a lay of the land where we'd be hunting. To say that the terrain is thick is an understatement. It took us about 2.5 hours to hike inland before we got to a "open" area where we could not walk through the thick alders/brush. Even in the grassy areas the grass was 3'-4' high so we had to bushwhack our way through everything. We were only out for a few hours that evening and saw tons of deer sign but no bear sign. Day 1-Started with a 3-4 hour hike to a overlook where we could glass the mountain sides around us. We did end up seeing a bear about a mile and a half across the valley. Here's where the dilemmas come into play......It would take us at least 2 hours to get in to shooting range and who knows if the bear would even still be there when we got into position. Safe daylight began at about 9:45ish and it was dark by 6pm. We found the bear at about 3:30 and had the hard discussion of not going after it because it would take us late into the night if we were able to actually shoot and kill it. We made the decision to come back to that area the next day and try to find him again. Day 2-Started with a 3-4 hour hike and we went in a different way to try and get a head of where we last saw the bear. We made it to the area where we were going to try and shoot the bear from the previous day. We glassed all day and could not relocate the bear nor did we see any other bears. We saw a ton of deer sign and also a few deer do it kind of gave us hope. They did want to shoot and deer yet and wanted to keep focusing on the bear. Day 3-You guessed it another 3-4 hour hike. Even though we didn't see a bear the day before we stuck to this area and in hind sight it was a bad idea. We didn't see any bear and very few deer though there was sign everywhere! This evening we moved the boat about 4 miles southwest down the shoreline. Day 4-We hiked along a stream but believe it or not after the first 1/4 mile the brush got thick again. There was actual bear sign here so we were on high alert walking through the brush/grass. We wanted to hike back to the lake where this stream originates but after 3 hours busting brush we still had a mile to go and decided it wasn't worth the time to get back there and only be able to glass for less than an hour. We ended up finding a bear on the mountains directly to the south of us but we had two problems......1 he was about 2 miles away and 2 he was on the reservation and we didn't buy trespassing tags ($200 per person) nor the tag to actually kill a bear on reservation land ($1,000). We had decided not to purchase either of the tags prior to leaving Kodiak. So we kept glassing until about an hour before dark so we could hike out. Day 5-Hiked along the river again and didn't see anything other than deer on this day. They decided that it was a bear or nothing so we glassed all day in multiple spots and never saw another bear. Day 6-Took the boat back to Kodiak....... All three of us had a great time but the bear just didn't want to cooperate. The other two were able to go duck hunting and got quite a few sea ducks in the evenings before it got totally dark.
