My son now lives in NV and they have a pretty unique tag turn back program. I won’t bore with the details but he was able to grab this late season bull tag. Filled his first bull tag while I was in route to help on the hunt. By the time I got there he had capped and quartered the bull by himself and humped the head and cape off the mountain. Happy to know I taught him a bit. Anyway even though all I go to help with was the meat haul it was a good hike and I couldn’t be happier for him

Today was my 3rd day hunting, got to the deer stand late this morning at 10:45. Sat all day and didn't see any deer until sunset. Saw lots of other stuff, which broke up the boredom: a bald eagle flying around the meadow, a bluejay, a racoon, a pheasant, a red headed woodpecker and another woodpecker that I didn't know what kind until later, turned out to be a piliated woodpecker- same kind as woody! So, just after sunset, I saw a big buck walking very slowly, kind of in my direction, but it kept looking to its right and was sort of steering that way. I figured it was going toward a side meadow instead of to me, plus I figured I was running out of shooting light, so I made the decision to get out of the deer stand and try to "head it off at the pass". Well I got out there in thick grass and swampy ground about 100 yards from the stand, had a tree line in front of me, the other side of that was the meadow I thought he was headed up. So I stopped to scan the treeline with my 8 power rangefinder, went back and forth a few times to try and find him. On the 4th scan, I see him come to the edge of the trees and stop. OMG, there he is! He came right towards me! I pushed the button on the rangefinder to get the distance, it's 80 yards. I slowly bring up my muzzleloader, it took forever to find him in the scope (didn't even know what power it was set on) but I finally locate him. He's quartering towards me, staring my way. I can't believe this is all coming together! So I shoot and end up with a monster non-typical Minnesota buck! After getting him in the truck in the dark, we got it to the farms shop, cleaned the buck and got him hung in the walk in cooler. Turns out my friends family have been tracking this buck all summer and had him on their trail cams! They named him the crab buck because of the crab claw feature on its right antler. Too cool! My hat's off to Tony for his help in making this happen. Thanks guys, I feel like I'm part of your wonderful family.

Taken a couple of weeks ago. Sako Vixen, 55grain Hornady. Fifty-yard shot, came in slow and crouching as he neared the caller/decoy.

I hunt some of the same areas that Big Chino does for their OTC stuff(which has largely all gone away now since you can't hunt the rut on OTC anymore in any of their main spots). They put alot of time in, and alot of the area is super thick and very hard to hunt unless A. Its dry and you have cameras(not allowed starting next year) and you sit water(they have run a ton of trail cameras for many years) or B. The rut brings the bucks out into the open so you can find them with does and stalk them. The other two outfitters I know that consistantly killed big deer on OTC in the past(again, not going to be able to now since most late OTC hunts are gone) have private ranches that they take their hunters into mainly during the rut and also used trail cameras and water heavily.

It’s a great thing watching your kids take things you’ve taught them and have success. Congratulations to you both!

I have an M77 tang safety 270 win I bought new in 1989. Dug it out of the safe recently to work up a load as I had only ever shot it with factory ammo before I started reloading. Started off intending to use 145 ELD-X or 140 Sierra GameChangers to take advantage of these newer projectiles. Used a comparater to determine cbto and learned I couldn't get anywhere close to the lands with those long bullets due to limits of the internal box mag. Wound up just going with 130 grain Hornady Interlock seated to the cannelure which was right at coal in my Hornady manual. Worked my way up with IMR 4831 and IMR 4350. My rifle did best with 55.0 grains 4350-1" at 100. After my brass was fire formed, I switched to neck sizing and using the Lee factory crimp die. This brought my groups down to .75 inches. Brass was once fired from mixed lots of factory ammo shot over several years out of this gun and my buddies M700 270. I sorted out a selection of Winchester brass that was all +/- 2 grains in weight, FL sized, trimmed, and started loading. Only shot it to 400 so far but haven't missed a 10" steel yet to there using a Nikon BDC reticle.

People don't understand when hunting the 12s that bucks are not under every tree, it's not easy at all. Congrats on a great deer. All the report's I have had from darn good hunters is it was extremely tough.

Congrats on a nice looking buck. It seems like Wyoming is rough on equipment. I've never been but I have 7 Antelope points so next year may be the year I go.

You know I DM’d you twice to send you a pic of the second biggest desert typical frame you’ve ever seen and you don’t respond

Private land and locked public. Hunting harder than most and being out there more often.

I've also seen red hot spots exist only in cycles. Every 3-5 years a burnt out spot comes back to life and vice versa.. Outfitters spend or pay for enough time in the field to keep track of productive areas each year.

If you have a camera with a fish eye lens just shoot the first 2.5 year old 3x3 you see and long arm the photo.
