My great grandpa on the right with Omar Bradley, duck hunting in South Dakota. I guess general Bradley said it was the only time he ever opened gates for a private, something like it.

Happy Veterans Day to all of my fellow Vets! The guy in the Civil War uniform was my Great Grandpa, he was in the 30th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Google will tell you where he was at. The other is my Grandpa, taken in Paris during WW1, he's in the middle row with the black dot.

Finally posting about my DIY antelope hunt. Broke some stuff on the way up and on the way back, had tire failures too, but that did not deter me, lol. I scouted this area back in August, saw the biggest buck ever there, so that's where I went each day. I didn't see that huge buck again, but I sat a water hole in that area. I used my Ranger as a blind, sat about 200 yards from a waterhole. It was comfortable, out of the wind and sun and the antelope didn't seem to care I was there. On day 2, a very unusual buck came in. He had a pure white head and a prominent black cheek stripe. Reminded me of an oryx. Trouble was he wasn't very mature. Sure would of made an awesome mount though. He also came in on day 3, so I had to decide not to shoot him twice, lol. Also on day 3, I was amazed to see a small herd of elk nearby. I wouldn't have ever guessed there would be elk around there. 4 huge bulls and 2 cows. Man were they dark compared to Arizona elk. Also on the 3rd day a pretty big buck came in. I really liked him so I decided to try and get him. Getting out of the Ranger and into a shooting position proved difficult, plus he was dashing all over the place, then left the water pretty quickly. I moved to a berm, set up and took a shot at 645 yards. Just missed him! Went back to the Ranger and sat a while more. Another group of antelope showed up and there was a buck similar to the one I just missed. I watched as he chased does and ran off all the other bucks. He was ruling the roost! I liked him, so while he was chasing does, I got out of the Ranger and set up for a shot. When I got my sights on him, he had his head down getting a drink. When he lifted his head, he was kind enough to turn broadside, so I squeezed the trigger. After the shot he was gone! I stood up but couldn't see him. All I had on me was my rangefinder, so I started panning looking for him. I saw his white rump out in the field. He ran 80 yards! I go over to him, there's a huge pool of foamy blood next to him. Turned out the shot went through both ribs without hitting bone and took out both lungs. I was a happy hunter! As he lay Didn't have a pen, so I signed it with antelope blood. First broken leaf spring. Second broken leaf spring. First blown tire. Second tire failure. Fresh backstraps made it all better.

He is 4 for 4. And I I’m proud of him. I know how hard it is to stay a young man that just wants to go hunting and not get involved in the numbers game. Especially around me, my friend’s. 100” is the topic when it cames to bucks, at get togethers and casual conversations. I do know how this kid does dream of a 100” deer but when I asked him what is was looking for this yr, his response “ just a 3x3 or a good 2 point”. Those words do make me happy. Here are his 4 coues bucks in four yrs Hope you all enjoy

I know a few people with several 150” bucks they think are 180.

I feel like there a ton more 100” coues shot than there are 170” mule deer. The problem with people shooting mule deer is everybody thinks their “big” 4x4 is 180” until they put tape to it and find out it’s a 150” 😂😂 or maybe that’s just my problem.

First of all. In order to help you I’m gonna need GPS coords to where it happened. Secondly, sometimes shoot happens. If the gun was on and the dope is good you just missed. I missed a muley in Utah last week. Shot over his back twice at 450. Held 12” low and shot right over his back again. The gun shoots 3/8moa and I’ve killed deer with it out to 1000. I just plain a55 missed.

The taxidermist just finished my mule deer I shot last year. I love it! They did a very good job. It was an incredible hunt that produced this great buck!

I have done a lot of of hunts where I have to hike 5-7 miles into back country and a lot where you are hurting your odds greatly by getting away from the truck. I do whatever it takes for my hunt to be successful and sometimes that’s a pack in and sometimes it’s truck glassing. No rule out there saying you need to hunt the same way anyone else does and vice versa.

I heard of guys on the early hunt seeing 200" bucks, but they were tough to hunt. I did not see many brutes taken. I bet the big Magnum burn really changed the landscape up there. Meaning relearning the unit on the west side. In another 2-5 years, watch what happens if we get the moisture going like the late summer rains we had. Came too late for the northern units, but the desert units will probably be great this year. Not to sound harsh, but a lot of the guides are using "Detroit Blinds" almost exclusively. If the bucks are in the transition, those guides won't be seeing them. Also, with most tanks holding water, the bucks are spread out instead of congregating to the GFD trick tanks like the last few years. Thus, saying the unit sucks. I would bet the late hunt is going to be a different story if the bucks keep moving down.

The full moon sucked. We hunted the west side. I thought the experience was awful. So much pressure and road hunters and hunters in general everywhere. I’ve usually hunted the east side. Less deer but less hunters too. It’s more intimate and less of a rat race. im going to shift gears and move away from the Kaibab. The late hunts are probably better with less tags but 375 guys racing around with multiple trucks on a ridge sucks.
