So my old man at 77 had never killed an elk. He has some serious mobility issues and drew the Champ tag in 4b. Knowing his limitations, he went in having decided on the first bull he saw. He spotted this guy about five minutes after legal shooting light and the rest is history. Great end to a great hunt and a fun weekend. We are beyond thrilled. My 70 year old mom tagged her first elk this year also. It was pretty magical getting to be there for them both this year. Sorry about the sideways pics

Here is my NM muzzleloader coues buck that I was able to harvest this past weekend. Shot him at 52 yards with my paramount.

Oh man, not much of a story teller! The AZ bull was about a 250 yard shot, had to sneak up behind by climbing a small mountain and getting perched on a rock ledge up above it. HARD going for me! Double foot drop and bad legs. The Utah one was a short stalk to a knoll and there were 3 bulls and about 40 cows up on a large smooth mountain/hill. That was about a 700 yard shot and getting up the incline to it was a real bear for me... My son was with me on both hunts and was invaluable in helping out. He tagged out in Utah within hours of me. Hope to repay the favor some day when he gets drawn in AZ (a gazzilion bonus points, should happen very soon)

This is my Son, Aaron Altaha Jr., 11 years old, this past weekend was the last weekend of his rifle hunt for deer and he tagged out his 1st deer the day before the last day on 10/30/21. And he was blessed to harvest a Awesome 7x8 Coues buck from the San Carlos Apache Reservation in AZ.

Taken a couple of weeks ago. Sako Vixen, 55grain Hornady. Fifty-yard shot, came in slow and crouching as he neared the caller/decoy.

I saw the same brass at Sportsmans on Yorkshire a couple weeks ago I would say 2 50 round boxes.

Pretty sure I saw Lapua brass recently at Sportsmans. Midway has ammo and RCBS dies but I would go with Redding bushing dies if you really want to shoot good.

The funny part is my cow and the new hunters cow are the same size. I am just 300lbs and he is 150lbs. 😂 both were probably 1.5yr old cows. Both of us turned in about 170lbs of meat to the processor between the legs and cut meat bags. The one in daylight was 230lbs turn in weight.

Yes, the fold up bag chairs cut into the back of my legs and don't last long.

+1 on 5guy's chairs. I have those and love them. Light, handy, and better back support than those 'soccer mom' chairs that have been so popular for the last 20+ years, or so.

Last weeks fast was tough, wasn't sure I could do it again this week. Then turns out I fasted from Sunday evening ending Wed noon with a bowl of chicken and rice. Yesterday morning, fruit and whey protein smoothie then drove up north and hiked into a spring I found on Google Earth. Tons of fresh bear sign in there. 13 pounds gone in 13 weeks. Feeling pretty awesome.

I've hiked down ravines and back up canyons on the Kaibab and just laugh at myself because I meet up with another road. Roads are all over up there, hence it making it attractive and productive to road hunt. I've seen some monster bucks killed this way. Just not my style.

Guys I just want to thank you all for your generosity, solid bunch of guys. Not surprised this was the end result. I will have the ammo and guns by the end of the weekend. I had another offer from a member in a private message for another 410. She has the 9 year old daughter who has the passion and an 11 year old son who also hunts so figured why not get them both one. Pretty excited to see the reaction of the mom and some pictures of the kids enjoying their guns. When I get the pictures I will share them with you all. Thank you.

Clover must be of the lucky four leaf variety as she drew two consecutive elk tags and filled each 😉 We started this October rifle cow elk hunt Friday by still hunting through a wide draw with scattered pinyons, but the elk did not want to be there that morning. That evening we sat a long opening above a similar draw thinking the elk would move across to feed that evening/night. Four cows did cross about 600 yards out, but held off considering the 20 mph wind. The next day had no activity in the opening or draw. The slow walk for a mile through the P-J to the long opening was good for the mind though. After the third fruitless morning, Clover and I went west and sat another opening for the evening. About 15 minutes after sunset, a lone cow followed by a raghorn bull came out. She lingered long enough to catch a 124 gr Hammer Hunter from the 6.5 WSM behind the shoulders and made a 30 yard dash before collapsing in the trees. The bullet exited leaving about a 1" exit hole. I did the gutless dressing so did not inspect for internal bullet damage. The 124 Hammer hunter is the one I used last year in the 6.5 WSM with similar results. I am sure Clover picked out a tasty elk for this hunt's freezer filler as she was very excited seeing her cow elk down on the ground. (Sorry, no pics were taken and only one elk was harmed.) Let quail season begin 😉
