Wouldn’t that decrease the amount of bucks even more

Hopefully lol - the other states you refer to need less deer in the population, not more. Several units just need less tags.

I don't want to be rude, but you guys need to read a manual. If he sent a 7.62x51 (.308 Win) down the barrel of a 6.5CM, which I highly doubt, he is lucky to have a face and fingers. Like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, then setting off a stick of dynamite behind it, all while 6" from your face.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure baby deer come from female deer. More female deer = more deer some of which (maybe 50%?) will be male deer. It feels like that lesson was lost on elk by the pure insanity of the number of cow elk tags/slaughter on some hunt and in some units. I hope that call is never given on our deer population.

Should have started with this. Now you confused the entire site apparently.

This is kind of a strange one to me. I’ve seen him on multiple videos with guys and it seemed like they were all very actively promoting coming to Az to hunt. I can’t understand what else he thought was going to happen?! I do completely agree with him in that it sucks to not be able to get drawn to hunt here every year now though…

Isn't it a little early to be drinking? 😁

Jim is a top notch biologist and I think we are lucky to have him here. But I guess he will just have to go share a camp with Randy Newberg or those Hush guys or some other YouTube celebrity that AZGFD has pandered to.

Who the heck is Jim Heffilfinger and who gives a rodents rectum about his Instacrapposts. I haven’t drawn a deer tag or anyone in family or friends for four years, five for myself. I don’t whine on social media. Welcome to reality.

That’s a lot of cope. Edit: also, he must have lived an extraordinarily blessed life if not having a deer tag is considered a “tragedy” in his family

Sorry to read of your loss of Belle. Thanks for the quail report. My hopes are resting on the Mearns.

The biologist aged him at 10+

Good thing you’re not a biologist. One buck can breed many does, and fawn recruitment is what brings back deer populations, both buck and doe. Killing does will only lead to a lower population overall. Buck to doe ratios are only meaningful in a healthy population.

I don't think anyone suggested he shoot the 7.62x51 down his 6.5CM. I think pretty much everyone on here said essentially the same thing you did. I believe the confusion is that he was sent a magazine wit the rifle designed for 7.62x51 (.308 Win), which uses a case that is comparable to his 6.5 CM. So it is likely that this same magazine is designed for both calibers. But you know more than I likely ever will, so if I am incorrect about the magazine please let me know.

The magazine is a different situation because those are made for a case size and not a bullet size. For example, I have multiple Tikkas in multiple calibers, but several of them use the same magazine (part number). Their 6.5 CM and .308 are two that use the same magazine. This is probably the situation with your friend. If the bullets feed into his magazine properly he should be fine. Just make sure the correct bullet goes into the chamber.

Think you guys got the best of it. 2nd season has been almost completely dead. Very little bugling the 1st day, then totally quite. Haven't seen or talked to anyone who even has a cow yet.

    1. Example... Assuming each applicant had a hunter Ed point and loyalty point.. that's two each. Applying separately that's 8 chances at drawing a tag with a low draw number. IE someone in his household gets a tag. Applying together cut those chances to just two chances. The group average would have had to be 8 for him not to blow up his draw odds. (And if the group average was 8 they still blew up their draw odds) Not likely given his story. If you want to hunt with a family member don't do what he did. Bottom line - any scenario that involves a group application gives an overall lower chance that at least one person in the group draws a tag. 2. He went on a long rant about opportunity. Don't complain if you don't utilize everything at your disposal. 3. You're right there. But if you're pushing the limits of what a deer herd can sustain, you're often not managing a healthy deer herd all the time. You've taken away the buffer. 4. I'm not asking anyone to do anything. I dislike when people play the victim card. Everyone involved should be accountable.

    1. What if they didn’t? He’s upset they didn’t get a tag like it’s a death in the family so I’m guessing they always get drawn meaning 0-2 points. he cut his families odds of drawing a tag dramatically 2. Maybe non bow hunters should pick one up before complaining about opportunities

I use bacon grease so my dog will hunt with me.

Unfortunately, my hunt experience in Flagstaff was not as productive as jo2012. I saw elk every day with an opportunity at a cow on 9/20, but my shot sailed high at 35 yards, she looked 50 yds to me. Ranging her was not possible since the wind shifted and she was staring right at me as I drew. On 9/22, i had several close encounters with elk, and even a 6x6 bull at 35 yards standing broadside. He had no idea I was there. If only I had a bull tag. I had a blast for 6 days burning shoe rubber up and down the hills. There were very few elk bugling in the areas I was hunting. But when they did, it made locating them much easier. Maybe I can draw another tag in AZ next year. Thanks to all the posters who gave me intel.

    Rebuildable 302, I am putting it in a 4runner with a c4 behind it.

I don’t see anything wrong with the 14 shots that were taken? There was an issue with the scope, nothing was wounded, they got it sorted, then drilled a nice buck! Great job

Pretty sad less and less people seem to post pics and stories. I like knowing my kids and future grandkids, great grandkids etc have a place to come and reread old stories that their parents were a part of.
