Like this? I call it the "A3 pose". Don't forget to get far back from the antlers too.

I was in 4a two, weekends in a row. elk look really healthy. Last weekend ,minimal bugling. Better this weekend. Saw three solid day 1 shooters. Two pushing cows. It’s not full on by no means but looks like it’ll start earlier than usual saw a 340 ish which is solid for that unit.

The bulls in 5a are rutting. The last two nights they have had bugling from 6pm throughout the night. Last night it sounded like a full swing rut while sleeping in the trailer. Hopefully they will be going well into the day with no moon the first week of the hunt.

Let me clarify… I listened to a Tim gillingham podcast with Aaron Snyder that changed my view on arrows. Tim pointed out that light fast arrows kill and penetrate better than what you think, plus you have the advantage of yardage forgiveness if you’re off a couple of yards. im guessing my bow , set up to hunt is around 325 fps, so tuning a fixed blade would be tricky, and require the utmost perfection during the release. I shoot a shwacker, which has the blade buried in the ferrule of the broad head for peak arrow flight. It kills at long ranges, including a 50 yard pass through on an elk. I shoot a 7.9 gpi arrow with a 100 grain head, cut at about 29”. im not saying a heavy arrow with a single bevel broad head doesn’t work, I’m saying a light fast arrow with an expandable does work. shoot what you’re confident with.

Just call em in to 10 yards and you don't have to worry about missing.

Went on our first scouting trip and wanted to post a few pics. I hope to add to it through the hunt.

Judging by the size of that man behind, that elk is like 2500 pounds and 600+inches. Unless that guy is an oompa loompa.

Hope they burned the paint off first.

I agree 100% I have tried weight sorting brass and can’t confirm or deny if it actually works for me. Best tool I bought to help long range consistency is a labradar. Ive shot some crazy low SD/ES with some “cheap brass”. And I actually had more problems with the harder brass like ADG and Petersen. They are definitely more ready to load and more consistent in a lot of ways but sometimes they seem to be too hard. Ive got 12+reloads out of RP brass running it hard before the pockets swelled. Find a load that shoots accurately and has low ES and just start shooting. Bullets down range, form, practice in the different environmental conditions is something alot of people skip out on and it shows. Ive seen many guys show up to the range with the top end everything and they get worked over in competition by guys that have rifles and gear that cost 1/2 as much. The guys with not as fancy gear obviously spent way more time petting their “fancy toys” and less time sending bullets down range. if you really want to be good at long range shooting , shoot in the wind ....a lot. I like to shoot at 1 moa to 1.5 Moa targets. Your not doing yourself any good shooting at barn doors. Lol

I believe you Edge. As far as I'm concerned, if you say you took it, then you took it. Full stop. But I'm not the AZGFD, nor do I know anyone there so have fun retaking the course. It'll be worth it long term.

Thanks for the link, had just decided yesterday to retake this. Apparently AZGFD, the NRA nor myself can produce the proof I took the course 50 years ago.

Okay, Who's ready? Under two weeks until go time! I've been shooting almost every morning for two months, and shooting good groups out to 65 yds. (please baby Jesus help me not take a shot further than 65 yds.) Also, the "will I get a shot opportunity" nerves are setting in. I haven't had a chance to scout this year but I know the unit very good and have my plan A, B , C well at hand. I image its a swamp up there and I pray the rut is in full swing next cpl of weeks with young dumb bulls running around, cuz the first legal one inside 60 yards is a dead Elk . Good luck to you all!

It’s probably been mentioned in someone else’s post, but I recommend that you bring some extra gas cans to use up there. I took 2-5gallon cans last year and wouldn’t go with less than that. JMHO.

The boy is fighting a lingering infection right now which is delaying his surgeries. The last 24 hours have been positive with a somewhat stable low temperature. They are hopeful for surgery on Tuesday.

If anyone kills a Muley and needs Artificial velvet give me a call. I have the ability to apply it if needed.

Was able to see some of Adam's work, and velvet looks good. Now if I can get something on the ground, I'd get it to Adam.

AZGFD is not doing in person H.E. classes right now. I would do the online thing and look for an online field day. You can get started here: https://www.hunter-ed.com/arizona/ and then watch for field days. I volunteer with AZGFD and we have just started doing field days for students who took the online course in the last few months.
