howdy all, who else here has a 12a archery tag this year? I'm familiar with the east side and becoming familiar with the west side now as i've already been up there this year once and by the hunt plan to be there another 3-4 more times to do some further scouting. As it seems the usual for me when i pull a kaibab tag my hunting buddies aren't able to make it up there with me this year as they have other hunts planned at the same time not in the bab so I will be hunting solo. So far i've focused on area's to hunt in and not so much "camp" or drop my trailer in. I'm looking for some suggestions on roads to look at in regards to having a decent amount of camping spots open, cell phone isn't required either but naturally it would be nice for the evenings. I know cell reception would be limited to say a 5-8 mile radius of jacobs lake where the tower is. If you've got suggestions for area's besides the burn, joe's mud hole for me to take a look at i'm all ears but by no means am I here asking or looking for secret spots. I'm determined to get time in the field using my boots and glass to make the best of it, but open and truly thankful for any suggestions to help me narrow down my focus a little bit. Pic for attention and to spur the excitement of the upcoming bab hunt!

This is my biggest one and for my hunting partner! We both got it done I spotted a buck 2200 yards out and made the stock. He looked like he was on the property according to. My spotter watched on a high hill. Once I got to within 500 yard. I looked on OnX and he is clearly on State Land. I radioed back to my partner and told him. He said what about the buck bedded down 700 yards to my left. I ranged him and said its more like 900 yards. But looked on OnX and said oh yeah he is on property. He said can you stalk him. It was so flat and not a stupid bush. Nor was I going to take a shot with 5 mph winds at 900. Plus if I got prone he disappears. Only option was to walk strait to him. I got to 450 yards. While bedded down he had no idea I got that close up to him. Once they see you In New Mexcio a 1,000 yards out they bust out of there. No Joke!!! I couldn't go prone. It was a slight hill and grass. But sitting on my knees with the bipod all the way extend at 450 yards my shot punched him and he took 3 steps back wards and fell over. My buddy long story short he missed this buck at 150 yards. Lol! He got to a prone position and at 600 yard and he started to prance off and led him 4ft and center punched him. The best part he dropped like a sack of rocks into the grass and disappeared. Like the earth just swallowed him up

Thanks. I grew up with labs so know they are wild for the first year(or 5) but turn into amazing dogs. I reached out to Dkart4 a couple days ago and sounds like they’ve been rehomed.

Check the classified section Dkart4 had a litter posted back on August 4 or so .I felt the same way when we had to put our 13yr old lab Odie down .labs are crazy puppies for the first year but great dogs .our new dog moose is 2 and still a big goofy puppy

I agree in theory but not in practice. The level of tune you need to throw those big long broadheads straight is beyond what most people’s shooting ability. I shoot a 500 grain arrow but my groups open up substantially with any fixed head ive tried, especially in wind. I don’t buy the whole single bevel “breaking” bone thing and I absolutely don’t want front end steering on my arrow (which is what a single bevel does). I think Ashby’s research is so focused on shooting African crap at 12 yards on a hay pile they forget that you also need to be able to hit things at reasonable hunting distances. I would agree that my bow would kill best with a 325gr single bevel head and a 800 gr areow at 15 yards, but if I’ve got that shot, it will do just fine with my 500 gr VAP and a rage.

one thing that is very important for a new to unit 33 hunter to be aware of is knowing how many hunts and hunters there are and will be in the area you are planning to hunt. for your hunt, there will be 3 rifle hunts prior to your hunt. a youth rifle hunt and two Oct general rifle hunts. more than likely, lots of other hunters will have been in the area you are scouting and possibly pushed the deer out. it all depends on who was drawn and where they hunt. Sometimes areas get very little pressure and sometimes they get pounded, it just depends. If there is an area you are considering hunting in Nov you might want to go out during the two Oct hunts to see how many other hunters have hit the area you are planning on hunting. It can be frustrating to find lots of bucks during preseason scouting, only to return in Nov and not be able to find them because they have already been hunted.

I’ll be out there in the late hunt in my 12’*12 Alaknak, wood stove and buddy heater. Hopefully I can get my son to feed the stove all night.
