Man this drought is tough on the animals. Found this girl stuck in a slick rock slot canyon. This time it was the other way around; tying to save them instead of shooting them. https://youtu.be/mUadQxvN7uQ

Agree this is the direction we are headed. Going to be interesting when you electronically "use" your tag, it will probably add a geolocation. What if your apple battery dies while in the field? Hope the wardens carry a portable quick charger!

Not too sure how I feel about this. Probably going to be the future of not only hunting but everything else. https://azgfd-portal-wordpress-pantheon.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/archive/Notice-of-Proposed-Rulemaking-Tag-Modernization.pdf

Thats pretty interesting, if this pass's you have to carry your cel phone while hunting. (so much for being away from technology while hunting). The you have to worry about everyone knowing your location while hunting and were you killed your animal. Wonder if they will pass this list out to guides like they do your drawing results.

If you are over spined, meaning too stiff of an arrow, you want to go towards a 400 arrow. 300 is more stiff than 340. The Gold Tip calculator is generally decent. https://www.goldtip.com/Resources/Spine-Chart.aspx If you ever get down south and still have these arrows, let me know.

The biggest I have is a Shimano Terez XXH rod, (80-200#) with a Fathom 60 2 speed with 100# braid. This and a lot of luck is probably only good for a 200# BFT. If I hooked onto a 300#, pretty sure I'm toast. I have a few other poles with 100# and 65# for my dropper rigs if I don't just switch over to the bigger rod. In the dark, 200# leaders and then when it's light, 80# fluoro IF they will bite it, otherwise dropping to 60#. For the yellowfin and Dodo trips later in the year, my SPM12ii on 50# is perfect unless you find the BF. Also a spinner with 50# is a blast on YFT and Dodos. If the big BFT are what you are chasing in August, they won't let you even put 30 in the water. They are begging people not to use anything less than 80#. The big fish are no joke. You can rent a heavy set up at the marina for 125.00 for a 1.5 day trip. Also if you are using flatfalls, switch out the stock rings and hooks... Fishing is expensive. Fishing for big BFT can get ridiculously expensive but tugging on a 100+# tuna is something you will never forget. I'd suggest watching the reports prior to your trip to see what they are chasing. EDIT: I would love to hear what others are using to successfully land the big ones. Captain speaks from 2:00 to 30:00 about the big BFT and is worth watching.

I will say this MX is a different world. Every time I have gone down, there is always a new challenge. Nothing crazy, but their world works different than ours for sure. None of these things would stop me from going again though. MX is not for everyone. Once you've hunted in MX you'll understand what the obsession with going back is all about. To me it's more of an adventure than a normal hunt here in AZ. It's a step back in time being on a ranch in the middle of nowhere. And the food....can't beat it.

5bs was extremely dry last year on my dads hunt as well. But there were still a few great tanks that surprised me with how much water was in them. Taking the week off leading up to opening day, as always, was invaluable. 5bs has some harsh roads, but we were willing to take them to get away from the crowds, large tumblers of coffee and leaving a couple hours before you hear all the generators kick on. Our experience with the rut last year in 5bs was incredible, and surprising. For us, using calls was not productive at all. And I believe that was because the herds we were running into were so large. The smallest herd (with a decent bull) we saw was maybe 50 elk, and the largest being a couple hundred. It was a learning experience for us, in the sense that glassing was next to nothing other than from one mountain, and that the herds were so large. Good luck on your hunt!
