My brother Robert came back down to look for the Mulie buck we glassed up last weekend when I filled my Javelina tag. We decided to sit a water source we found. We got to our spot well before daylight and sat in the Ranger talking of hunts past. After getting my Barronett Ground Pounder blind set up he moved the Ranger back a couple hundred yards. We continued our talk of yesteryear for a little while as we both thought we would not see much in the early morning hours, we'll that didn't happen. I just started to film a woodpecker when he whispered, "deer....buck" and the heart started pounding. I filmed as he slowly walked in and started to get a drink. Roberts shot was off a little but with the Swhacker broadheads that few inches didn't matter the buck didn't make it 40 yards leaving a highway of blood. After taking care of his buck we decided to sit a while longer and see if another would grace us with his presence. A few hours later we spotted a Javelina on the ridge above coming in to get a drink. Suddenly he turns about face and Trott off. At that point we could hear two guys talking as if they were 20 yards apart walking down the two-track. After a few words with them they continue on. A little after noon we decide to head in and take care of his buck. Driving out we jump up a real nice 4x4, so I bail out and give chase. I got about 90 yards before he dropped into a wash and disappeared. All in all a great day. Robert and have just recently gotten back to hunting together and this day makes #9, we have been successful 7 of those 9 days bringing home Mule Deer, Coues Deer, and Javelina. Here is the video.

My take is, I can't go get an OTC archery tag in NM, CO, UT, NV, etc. so I'm not real big on having an army of out-of-state hunters flooding one of the few opportunities we residents used to count on while building points for some of the desirable hunts.

I never gave my kids an allowance, and I never received one. Everyone was expected to do thier part. They all got jobs when they were old enough and appreciated what they earned. I have one in the navy, one in school to be a teacher, one in school to be a rocket scientist,(seriously) and one is a senior in high school. They have all payed thier way. They all turned out just fine. They never ask for anything. When I see that they are struggling my wife and I help them out to keep them on thier paths, they have definitely earned it. My .02

Exactly. Draw tags are (supposed) to be issued in quantities that that are manageable for the herd size. Who is managing the amount of archery tags that get issued? I would guess that in some units, the amount of archery hunters FAR surpasses the amount of rifle hunters. Offering unlimited archery OTC tags all the while not having mandatory harvest reporting is absolutely ludicrous. G&F has no idea of the impact of these hunts.

I have a Bushmaster ACR for sale. this is becoming more of a rare gun to find. Amazing gun, chambered in .556, lots of fun to shoot and still has potential to be a multi caliber gun. the adjustable gas block makes it very simple to switch from Unsuppressed and suppressed without any cycling issues I also have an additional Polymer handguard not pictured that I will throw in with it. $2500 obo, call or text for fast response. 4805408344 Will entertain trades as well but primarily looking for cash.

I'm not sure 20 dead deer by 112 hunters in a unit the size of 1 can be termed a "slaughter." 🤣

#1, he mentioned that archery hunters were required to report their harvest, that's not true today (maybe I'm wrong). Out of those 23,000 archery tags sold in that year (I bet its four times that amount now), tell me how many bucks were taken? You can't because they don't even know accurately. So now you have to throw in the fact that archery technology is way better than it was in 2008 so to me that would mean that more deer are taken with archery equipment now more than ever and hunters are definitely not in the decline like they were in 2008. So better equipment and WAY more people hunting equals more deer killed, yet the same system of over the counter tags is the same as it's always been, sell as many as you can. I'm just saying that there has to be a better way to figure out numbers of deer taken and maybe that means we have to change the over the counter tags into a draw for a little bit. At least with rifle hunting they know how many tags are out there and they can get a ballpark estimate of percentage of deer taken. In archery it's just a free for all. I'm not going to sit here and argue with you and claim that I know everything. I just know that the number of archery hunters is WAY more than normal and we don't have an accurate way of telling how many of those people kill deer (a paper mail in postcard doesn't work unless you enforce it). So maybe mandatory reporting and a draw is what needs to be done.

It seems like it would be very difficult to find a replacement. Maybe those stock makers like Boyd’s has replacement pieces, I don’t know. It almost sounds like you find a used rifle that’s not cracked and swap them and try to sell the rest. If it’s not too bad, you can fix the crack with epoxy. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about that. I sometimes watch them to see how the repair turns out. The channel Mark Novak, shows a few repairs to mausers and other WW2 rifle foreends. He does a good job.

I've hunted that area for antelope. I saw a few elk tracks, but never saw an actual elk. Obviously they are there at certain times, but they move a lot. IMO, one of the hardest obstacles is access. There's a ton of good country in there but lots of private and tribal land to navigate. I would recommend ONX maps and a sidearm + boot knife, neck knife, ankle gun... when you get in there you'll know what I mean.
