Well the youngest drew another youth tag this year. I was able to go out the day before the hunt and check the areas from last year, with no deer being found. 5 miles of boot leather and 120 mile on the tire tread, and I could not find a single deer. Our close family friend Luke was able to go out with us on opening day. We were able to find three does first thing in the morning, and not another deer was seen until 5:30 that afternoon. Luke came through once again, when he was able to glass a single deer. We were able to confirm not only was it a buck, but he was definitely a shooter. We were able to hike into the area, and get Gavin set up. Luke ranged the buck, and I dialed the scope. Gavin made a great shot, and his tag was filled. I’m starting to think he has a thing for 3x4’s as this is second one in two years. This is his best buck to date. Great day in the woods, with a great kid and, a great friend!

You guys need a Scheels down there. They started in Fargo ND. I worked in the archery shop there through college. Steve Scheel (the owner) was on the floor almost every day. Employee owned. Great customer service. After working there I was horrified to go into a Cabelas or Sportsmans. Scheels puts a ton of education money into even their weekend kids. They’re one of the few brick and mortar retail stores that is growing like crazy. I think they’re in UT, NV and TX now and all over the Midwest. Also they sell their guns and ammo at cost or close to it. I actually had to have my brother buy ammo for me when I worked there as my employee discount was cost + 5% so ammo was more expensive to me as an employee!!

wanted one of them red horns but never saw any. Saw a few that were orange. I guess you gotta be in the other mountain range for those.

January 30, a few of us have already planned to meet up to shoot rocks and lay claim to bragging rights. Anyone that beats me at whatever games we make up will get a shooting bag or something. For anyone interested, I'll have my long range gear, shooting bags, etc. I am more than willing to share what I know as long as others do the same. I'm not an expert, but I am no slouch either. Mainly, you'll just get regurgitation of what I learned on the shooting range with a couple military sniper instructors and what I have picked up from good shooters at the PRS matches in Phoenix. Even if you just want to come and hang out, I'll have a rifle you can shoot a mag or two. I can guarantee if you can press a trigger without disturbing the rifle, you will make hits as far as we have steel. If you shoot my ammo, a contribution would be appreciated. Time is 8:00 am until we are done. Specific location is to be determined, but probably on the South side of the Valley. Probably between Maricopa and Gila Bend so the North West guys can come around the Mountain. PM me if you are interested in going. There are probably half dozen confirmed right now. A couple of them are rookie friends of mine so everyone is welcome.

Getting a Scheels here would be nice. Maybe Cabelas would close because of it.😏

Tessa was able to take this buck on the last day of her hunt. We saw over 100 bucks and this was the biggest taped him right at 180. Off to Wyoming next month for buffalo

It was a tough year for sure. We have seen several deer in the area we hunted in years past. A lot less deer for sure.

Many will say Vortex, and they're not wrong.

I’ve always been impressed at how high end optics hold their value. The highest cost of ownership of any optic ive ever owned was a pair of Vortex binos I bought for $450 and had to throw away because they were such garbage. I’ve got tens of thousands of dollars of other high end optics and I could sell any one of them right now and lose less then that on them. I hear people talk about how they can’t afford high end optics and I’d argue that I can’t afford to run cheap optics.

My question is geared towards a long range hunting situation, most likely a 300 win mag or similar type round. I haven't even heard of some of the glass that Lance mentioned, I guess I'm more asking sub $3k.
