Friday: We started hiking to an area just before sunrise. We sat on a small hillside and could hear a bull screaming a few hundred yards away. Ten minutes later one of the larger bulls that I've ever seen was standing 30 feet from my son, he busted us, screamed and ran off. We waited awhile and started to hike where he came from, but never found him or any ladies, so we left dropped a cam and left the area. We spent the rest of the day hitting a bunch of other solid areas and had a near miss with hitting a bull and a few cows that blasted just feet in front my bumper. That miss is a whole other story. Saturday: Once again, we started the morning with a nice hike just before sunrise. We got settled-in hillside, and things got loud quick. It sounded like multiple bulls in the draw around for us. We fought the urge to get up and go look to see if they were coming our direction. Minutes later, I could just barely see 4-5 cows moving in slowly at a few hundred yards out with a decent bull trailing them. The bull stayed back and the cows made it to about 70+ yards from us. My son was all in at this point, but the cows were moving all over this small area and the target kept changing. The bull that was with them was sounding off big time and looking in our general direction. I can’t imagine what it took for my kid to filter out everything and focus on one of the larger cows that had now stayed still. I could hear Carson say “I got it Dad, can I take the shot” and I responded “do it up son”. A few seconds later he says “I got it Dad, can I take the shot” and responded “yes, do it up…I said”. A few more seconds go by and now he turns around to me and says “I got it Dad, can I take the SHOT” and I responded “TAKE THE dang SHOT SON” followed by a smack on the back of his head. A few seconds later I hear the safety pop and he takes the shot. I just remember watching the cow take ten steps or so and was like did he miss… then I see a perfect lung shot for split second just before it dropped and expired a minute or so later. We put in all kinds of work camping, scouting, and hiking for my son's youth cow hunt. Outside of fresh sign we never turned up much besides a few random spots to sit and water littered with cameras. I started chatting with one of the members here and he gave us some solid leads. Out of complete respect for Beaton, I left out most of the detail. I can't thank you enough Beaton, very much appreciated man! This was Carson’s first big game hunt, so you made me look good and sure as crap set expectations high for his deer and pig tags down south in a few weeks… ha.

Back on topic. If the OP wants message me as we get closer. 24a is a unit I hate to love. It can humble you rather quickly but has other redeeming qualities.

And Outdoor Writer is being modest...he’s one of the authors of that book along with Duwane. The book is the absolute best coues deer resource out there...in my opinion. I re-read most of it every season. You’ll learn a ton from glassing with Duwane just too bad it’s not before your hunt one helpful glassing technique I think I picked up from the book...to pick apart an area pretend you’re walking around on the hill you’re glassing. Look under every tree, next to every rock, etc...When glassing a large area it’s very easy to glass ay too fast and just scan. Going back and “walking” the area looking for movement and parts of deer has helped me a lot especially finding bedded deer.

If you want to see what they're eating by squashing them, put a couple pellets in your mouth for a few minutes to soften them. 😎 Now let's go to a commercial break: Think about buying one of these from Amanda's store here. If she doesn't have any left, send me a PM for info.

I’m not an experience hiked and I’m out of shape. I’m hoping determination will out weigh the other two factors 😂 I hiked some pretty nasty stuff yesterday and didn’t fall or have a heartache so I think I should be ok. as for quartering a deer, I’ve never hunted in my life. So I’ve done as much research as possible, and if I’m lucky enough to find a deer, let alone shoot it, I guess we will see how the processing part goes.

I'm posting for my friend, I did go out today but didn't fish. I did run over 2 greeds I think....please don't call the cops on me. 15 bass 2 nice crappie trolling Norman fat free shad in the shad color by the dam. 74 76 degree suface temp, and calm. Very nice and the lake lice is pretty much gone/done for the year. Cheers.

Been eating pretty “clean” but I did binge on 6 Bosa donuts yesterday. The problem is I eat enough clean food for a 300lb whale

If I’m finding poop and bedding areas near water that’s probably a good sign right? Is there a good way to determine how old their poop is? To get an idea how recently they were there? I know javelina will eat the prickly pear cactus pads, but while our hiking yesterday, I was following a game trail from some deer beds, found lots of poop, and then I saw a prickly pear that looked like it had bites taken out of it. Do Coues deer eat cactus? Or mainly just grass?

That is arguably one if the worst hunts in the state. The deer have been pressured so much by then. anyway there are deer in every one of those places you mentioned. Get comfortable and pick apart the hillsides. Good Luck

Meh, all species adapt to the weight of big racks and proudly display them.

Buy used Swarovski 15s non HD for 1500 or save a little more for HD 15s. Dont buy second rate when you are so close to the best.

No problems with the caliber. Thousands of Coues have fallen to a well placed .243. In fact if a cartridge was created for Coues given bullet weight vs body weight the 6mm would be very high on the ideal list.
