Hunt Video My kids tease me because I turn everything into a video. Why not her hunt too?

I had the opportunity to go help my niece and 2 nephews hunt last weekend. My 22 year old son went along also. We had a blast. Glassing, hiking, roasting in the sun, camping out, laughing and we even got lucky enough to pack out some deer. A couple of take aways. Practice, practice, practice shooting, suppressed if possible. Dont wait until the day before you are leaving to see if the clothes you bought them last year still fit, they probably wont. Kids need gaiters, socks full of stickers make hiking and sitting and glassing unbearable Carry extra headlamps, kids lose them. Carry extra batteries, some adults forget to check those too. Carry sunscreen and extra lip balm, kids lose their hats and moms get upset when they see pics of red faced kids. Carry extra water, kids and adults sometimes forget to check their packs prior to leaving camp. Treking poles save knees, more for old guys than kids. A lightweight tarp makes glassing nicer, another use for those treking poles So does a can of bug repellent. Tripods and binos for all, kids involved in finding their deer feel like they are part of the hunt. Buy all the snacks and soda their mom's do not let them have at home. Pack more ice and ice chests than you think you might need. Relax and let them have fun and send pictures of them having fun to their moms. Now some pics...... I have handed down my kids old hunting clothes to them. It makes me happy to see them wearing them and takes me back to the days my kids went with me on youth hunts. Really the best of times.

The last week has been a whirlwind of activity around here. Picked up my Colorado grandsons last Wednesday at the Prescott airport, neat place. You go back in time there! Wednesday was Trevors 12 th birthday, so for the next 2 weeks he’s the same age as his brother! Thursday was a day of shooting the rifles, 270 wsm for Trevor and .300 win mag for Zach, Larry’s Blauser. Both boys felt comfortable so it was off to scout a bit. We had 4 juniors in our group, Friday morning Cliff’s jr., Brooke 15, got her cow before the sun hit the ground! The rest of the group struck out on the morning hunt. That afternoon Dusty’s grandson,Jake, tagged out chasing bugles. Saturday morning Zach missed a shot , and Trevor got to see a couple of groups spook after winding us. Saturday afternoon Zach got his at 225yds and Trevor missed one at 200yds. Now we got three down and Trevor is the lone tag holder. Sunday morning bulls were going crazy when we got out of the truck, after a half hour of keeping the wind right and enough cover to hide us, Trevor put one down at 200 yds! First elk for all four kids! Couldn’t have been better!

I came across this gun online being auctioned off. How unique it is. The army was different 140 years ago. Companies of men supplied their own food, did prep work and cooking. SN: 381 US Military issue foraging shotgun built using some musket parts, issued two per company to assist in gathering food. Bore is bright, with areas of pitting or corrosion. Metal is mostly dark plum brown color with bright spots from rubbing; lock plate is a dull silvery gray with patches of patina. Wood is fair condition, with visible cracks at wrist and in buttstock, many dents and gouges. Marked "1881" in italics on breech block. Condition is NRA Fair *** Antique Firearm * https://reatapassauctions.proxibid.com/Firearms-Military-Artifacts/Firearms/Springfield-1881-Trapdoor-Forager-20-Ga/lotInformation/56808416

That’s an Ecoboost baby, it’s rated for it. As long as you don’t have to stop or turn everything will be fine.

Feed comes into the equation as well from what I understand. In hot dry years like 2020 the second estrus can make a dream hunt happen. November is pushing the date though.

I took my daughter through Meadow Canyon, then down to the Hanging Gardens and then swam the White Box. It is one of the prettiest places in West Clear Creek. Here is the video

Oh my sillyness what an end to a ridiculous hunt. Was heading out for one more evening of failure when Big Browns gives me a call and so graciously offers to take us to his super secret A+honey hole. Off we went. We climbed a small miserable mountain and right away found elk. Wrong flavor though. Not to worry, Big Browns not only takes us to this amazing spot, he then FINDS the elk TOO. After a short mad scramble to get everything set up,my niece launches her FIRST bullet at her FIRST big game animal. 530yds. The hours of practice paid off and she laced miss daisy with an (almost) perfect shot. Tucked it right behind the front leg just clipping the elbow. After a VERY short run/fall....elk down. Then the REAL fun began. Big Browns and her dad head back to get the ranger and she and I head through the scrub to find the prize. It took us over an HOUR to find it because of a) thick nasty scrub and b) a little hidden gully that fooled us and c) sheer stupidity on my part for not getting walked on to her. No worries, we had plenty of time because Big Browns doesn't know how to change a tire. Luckily he has hillbilly friends that do and came to his rescue. A few cuts later and elk bags in the Ranger and HAPPY niece. It was really AMAZING. her dad had been down with bronchitis for over a week, This was the first chance he had to get out. Shouldn't have because he was hacking up a lung but didn't want to miss it"just in case". Thank you again to all who offered help. Absolutely made this a fantastic experience. THIS is what makes this forum a great place. And of course I can't thank Big Browns enough for making this happen(after ALREADY helping TWO other youths this morning!!!!). And to wildwoody for saving the day. Just......AWESOME. Thank you guys. we did get some video but I am WAY too tired to mess with them right now.

FOC=more weight on the front. More weight=less speed. What is the purpose of having more “foc”? Your 412gn arrow at 289fps will kill any animal in north america. 5-6” group at 70 isn’t good enough? You sure increasing foc will be the end all? People get too caught up on the small details and forget the big picture. I’ve ran 400gn arrows through a bunch of animals and i don’t think any one of them wondered what % foc i was shooting. Sorry, FOC is a trigger term for me.

Ive seen rutting in November in normal years.
  21. 1 point
Believe it or not the rut is supposedly triggered by the amount of sunlight in the day, that's what starts the estrus cycle in a cow elk. So if that's true then the rut should start around the same time every year no matter the temperature. Like another one posted, I think when it's hot they just do all their rutting at night so it makes it seem like they aren't rutting when we go out during the day.

I get what your saying but my last few hunts have been so exhausting all I’ve wanted to do was have a whiskey, eat, and go to bed. Fire was my last concern. I have had a few hunts where a fire was a must. This year I think one of those propane deals would work just fine. Good luck if you decide to go out.

Turning in a tag because you can't have a campfire at night.....sheesh. This is why I hate the point guard system.
