spent some quality time with my boy Jake this week chasing Elk and deer. I kind of knew it was getting close to time but not as close as now! Don’t get me wrong Jake is fine he will just be a home bound dog from now on, we put some good miles in checking cams and hiking my bow around and even though he could hardly stand up after a few days in he still tried to go with me this morning. He is a real bad dude, he hated it but I gave him the day off. I’m going to miss some of my favorite time in the mountains with Jake leading the way out in front of the mules or running squirms from tree to tree. Happy retirement buddy, you earned it.

After 17 days scouting I made a mistake and shot the wrong buck opening weekend. Scouting went great lots of big and solid bucks. I had a huge hit list and it all went to crap as a group of bucks were coming into my stand the biggest buck was leading. At some point they switched spots and this buck led the group when I shot him at 12 yards. I had my duffel bag stolen from the back of my truck in the great city of Flagstaff. It had all of my hunting clothes, boots misc hunting gear and worst of all my 15s. Sometimes that is what happens.

I think @trphyhntr nailed it, all the forums I’ve been on over the years have really slowed down, and every single one of them has ‘old timers’ pissin and moaning about the new punks chasing everyone away. It’s called nostalgia, humans are programmed to always think last year was better than this and that 10 years ago was much better than last year and the music from our high school years was the golden age of rock/country/whatever. Quit being a bunch of crotchety old bastards and grab the horse by the reins. If you feel there’s not enough quality content, then please contribute some. If you think some people are diks than set a higher moral standard of prudishness and don’t slink to their level. Use the ignore function. Easy peasy. i personally think this is still one of the best hunting forums on the web and I enjoy checking in from time to time. Good luck all, go sling some pointy sticks at innocent and defenseless woodland creatures.

I don’t think I’d hunt with a dude who brought his wife. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Simplified: JJ had a tag. A3 has a license. Elk shot on state permitted ground. Valid hunt. Beautiful bull. We got to live it vicariously. We paid nothing. Congratulations JJ! Thanks for sharing!

Growing up in AZ, we always told Mexican jokes, love them. Three years ago.i found out I'm half Mexican (mestizo). Still love to hear them as much as ever. When did we forget how to laugh at ourselves?

My wife brought up to me that when we see elk the cows are almost all with calves. After thinking about it and looking at some video I noticed she was right. I wouldn’t hesitate to say we have seen like 80% of cows with calves this year. I just stalked in on a group this morning that was 100% cow calf pairs. I don’t remember seeing that in the past. Anyway just a random detail from spending a lot of the summer up here in the pines.

I haven’t tried the mavens but I would say they’d be a pretty expensive pair of binos to own. I’ve owned 6 different pairs of swaros and none of them have cost me more then $200 to own due to the awesome resale they hold. A lot of people ask me how a person can afford swaro optics and I guess my question would be how can you afford to run anything else? I’ve got a few pairs of $500 vortexikoneupolds laying around and I bet I couldn’t get $100 a pair for them anymore so they cost me twice as much to own as my swaros. I’m in no way debating the quality of mavens, there’s some other real great binos (Zeiss the one that really stands out to me) that don’t bring near the resale that swaros do. As far as the slightly higher power, that’s a marketing gimmic used by bino companies to stand out and catch the eye of the “more is better” crowd. You want to stick with a 1:4 ratio between power and obj. 1:5 is actually the most ideal for the human eye but most popular optics are 1:4 such as (10x40, 12x50,15x56, 20x80). Anything more and you’re compromising on what your eye can take in as far as light (information).

Every time this comes up I share some advice I got as a young man. Bring more than you take away. I learned a lot from this site over the years. Hopefully it shows that I am still trying to repay that debt.

I kind of agree with the post but not totally, I bet most of us would have a good argument with who you might think was the worst attitude on here if you were in person by a fire and move on to go hunt or fish. One thing that’s a bummer to see on all media platforms is what people click on, I pay close attention and make sure I never click on silly human content. Example, YouTube video of a young man making a knife from raw metal with some serious craftsmanship gets 5,000 views. Now some chick in a bikini shows her bum and 1.2 million views. I refuse to click and make it a point to find creative folks to support and ignore the typical click bait crap. Same kind of goes here on this sight , a good hunt post gets 5 comment and a few likes and Then some stupid drama with really bad content post has 20 pages of complete nonsense. People are going to be people and fill their brains with nothing productive. What gets missed in the mix is the silent majority of great lurkers and posters here.

This section is called “The Campfire”. A lot of these threads are actually topics that would be discussed at deer camp around the fire. Heck, just read the description of the forum: “Gather round the campfire and let's see where the discussion goes.” I don’t want to sound like a **CK but are you new to the internet?? lol. It has always been, and always will be like this. Personally, I have to walk on eggshells enough in my normal day to day life. I am not walking on eggshells on the forums. Just my .02. I don’t get triggered or take stuff personally on here.
