Thought I’d throw up a pic of last nights dinner. Elk tomahawk steaks with some other goodies my wife put together. If you can at all make it happen to keep the bone in your back strap steaks like this you’ll take them to a new level!!! I have packed a sawzall into some heck holes and have done it with a gerber folding saw a time or two as well.

The youth cow hunts have become my favorite hunt of the year! Bulls are usually screaming and cows are everywhere!

No issues and business as usual. This is no different that the usual flu, so media hype to drive out Trump. Unless you're fraile just like all other flues, there is nothing to stress about if you are healthy. Probably one of the best times to travel on the cheap. Great rates now on hotels, planes, cruises, and destination trips. Smokin deals now to Alaska for the summer trips.

I drew 1 early archery 6 years ago with 5 points and this year with six, not counting loyalty or hunter ed points. I drew a late 22 rifle tag my first year applying. my oldest son drew a late 27 tag his first year applying. Took my father in law 22 years to draw a 27 late bull tag. The draw is definitely luck. Has to be.

I've killed one lion. I've had 5 other "encounters". One came into the call because I could see the tracks as I left the stand. He came in down wind about 20 yards from where I was sitting. That cat should have died that day. That day I learned that you need to be looking down wind!!!!!! If not you won't be seeing the cat. Another time I called in an area and heard some really, really weird noises. Never heard them before and haven't heard them since. That afternoon (maybe 4 hours later) I have a pic of 4 cats sitting at the tank drinking for the better part of 15 minutes. Close but no cigar on that one. Next encounter I called again and nothing came into the call. I made a call on Saturday evening and it was about 300 yards from a tank where I had a camera. I stopped calling around 7;30PM and I had pics of the cat at the tank at 7:51 when I came back and checked out the camera. Well that cat for sure came into the call and I just didn't see it. Close again but no cigar. Called in another Lion that I thought might eat me. It was pissed and making noises that scared the crap out of me. Made the noises "roar" for the better part of 10 minutes but it was super, super thick and I couldn't get close enough to kill it. Probably a female that was protecting its young. Lion I did kill came flying into the call at about 10 minutes. I was flanking the call instead of being down wind (will never sit down wind again). When it came in I remember telling myself to enjoy the moment because it only happens every so often. Now shoot the lion. Shot it at 100 yards. It was on a very brisk walk and I hit it right behind the shoulder with my .243. Cat went about 100 yards and died with no blood trail. I was lucky that it rained the day before and the ground was super soft and mostly dirt. I tracked it by its track and nothing else. After skinning the animal I've decided that I will be using a bigger gun. They are super strong critters. They aren't built like deer and elk. Their legs and bodies are solid muscle and are killing machines. I will be putting more energy into the next lion I shoot. Lions are probably easier to call in than people think. I believe you kind of need to target lions if you want to kill lions. They are different that dogs for sure.

These are great tents, easy up and down. Super big for one and really comfy for 2.

My advice would be to stop digging, put the shovel down and keep Houston’s contact info. When he says he knows less about the unit then some, that list is really really small. Also I wouldn’t overlook 3a. Find some high glassing points that are close to home and get out and sit on them. You’ll eventually pick up bulls in those flats. Wherever they are now isn’t far from where they’ll be come Black Friday. If you’re finding sheds in there then even better. 3c is tight on then Rez and most of the big bulls that rut that unit won’t even be in 3c by the time your hunt comes around so if you live close to 3a I’d spend a little time up there as those elk don’t have a rez to hide on.

I live between Pinedale and Clay Springs and so i live in the middle of the unit. Any Idea how much money I spent on gas alone last year scouting??? I'll give you a hint it was real close to $3500. Everything I know about the units which is less than some and quite a bit more than others has taken me 30+ years to accumulate. I stand by my advice. start driving the roads, learn the unit and talk to people. More than likely you will run into me at some point and I'll be happy to talk to you. I drive an 2010 Tundra that has dents, and dings and always has mud/dirt on it. It has been well used. Most of us will help if a person puts in a little effort, not just asking for handouts.

Zeke was simply making an analogy. 90% of the people on this forum are what I would consider to be "hard core" hunters. We put in a whole lot of effort and believe it or not we actually (for the most part) like to help people. The problem with a new member is most of the time they show up right after the draw asking for help when they haven't helped contribute for the greater good. They get the help they need and then never return to say thanks or even share the story of their success. You may be the type or maybe not. Point is this makes people feel unwilling to help because in the end its often in appreciated. The wrong question to ask is where do I go? The right thing to ask is how do I hunt this unit on this particular hunt? And I'm honestly not trying to be rude but you called a bull elk a buck and called deer deers. It's hard to take you seriously because most new hunters know the difference. And even worse you live in the unit your hunting, you should be the one we are asking for help. Again, really not trying to be mean just trying to explain why your getting the reaction that you are getting.

Whoa I was all about trying to help until you referred to hunting as a "hobby". First thing, this is a true primal passion for many red blooded men world wide. If you approach this with a laissez-faire reaction you're going to get a crappy hunt. Don't expect people who they're live their entire year for the fall to want to help you much at all with a ho-hum approach. Just try to have fun with your new hobby. You could also build model planes or cars, make beer or print t-shirts for your friends. Don't put this on the same level as that stuff. Most of our Falls are planned around killing something.

Mike, Great to hear you are recovering. The very best wishes and prayers to you. I too, just underwent back surgery, a four level S1-L5, L4-L5, L4-L3, and L3-L2 lumbar fusion surgery at Mayo Clinic. I was having excruciating pain while standing and walking due to spondylolisthesis and scoliosis. The first 3 to 4 weeks were brutal (due to pain) to get through, but now in the 5th week after surgery, PT and home exercise, especially walking a couples of miles per day are very quickly improving my walking and ambulatory abilities. Pain began to diminish about the 4th week after surgery. I am still on a limited activity level, but abilities are improving every week. I'm looking forward to getting out fishing and hunting. Fortunately my Mayo Clinic diagnosis, pre-op, operation procedure, and continued follow up were absolutely impeccable, and the previous back/hip pain are fully gone. Hang in there with therapy, and patience, and you'll hopefully soon be back to normal. The very best to you in your recovery, from someone in the same situation! Unfortunately, should you not achieve a satisfactory result in your back pain you may want to consult Mayo to see if they can help. Keep at anything that can help you get rid of that disabling/excruciating pain. Best wishes sir, because I understand!
