Took my daughter out this morning for her 2nd pig hunt. Glassed up a herd right off the bat, put the sneak on them and after pursuing them for a little ways this bore stood up out of his bed and she shot him at about 75 yards. I'm super proud of her, she's the cheerleader type of girl but a couple years ago I talked her into giving hunting a try, I think I got her hooked😀

I think it is very hard to make correlations of different barrel length velocities in different rifles, or even when switching barrels on the same rifle. Different barrels will shoot different velocities, even at the same length. A tight bore will get you more velocity than a loose bore. Groove numbers, design, twist rate, shape, cut will net different velocities. Factory ammo can vary a lot by each shot, each box, each lot. Powder selection can make a big difference in velocities vs. barrel length. Faster burning powders are more efficient in shorter barrels. So they see smaller gains in longer barrels or losses in shorter. Cartridge case capacities can make a difference in barrel length vs velocities. If you are trying to burn 100 grains of Retumbo in a 20" barrel, expect a huge fireball at the muzzle, because I would bet a lot of that powder won't be burned by the time the bullet leaves the barrel. But a .221 Fireball in a 30" barrel with 20gr of Benchmark powder has probably all burned up by 16" of barrel length. Nothing left to keep pushing velocities for the next 14". Bullet weights can have an effect on velocities in different barrel lengths. So many variables go into the equation, it is hard to have the same results every time. Only your rifle, barrel, cartridge, and load will tell you what YOUR rifle will do. To me, there are a few reasons to want to shorten a barrel from 26" to 20". Lighter carry weight, stiffer barrel, more handy in the thick woods. You can probably change your loads, even with the same bullet, and lessen your drop in velocity when cutting off 6" of barrel length. Powder, primer, seating depth. As for physics, I have no clue how cutting off 6" of barrel length, with all other factors staying unchanged, will not effect velocity. But it does happen. I would place my money on powder burn rate.

The AZ G&F manages the ELK and DEER herds with hunting. We dont need wolves to manage animal populations. The people who want wolves want to eliminate hunting and therefore eliminate guns.

Wow I didn't expect this conversation to take a left turn at the light, but it seems to have. All I will add is in my work career I worked with black belt data professionals. They were excellent at data mining and identifying opportunities. Having said that, I learned that they could dissect the data excellently, and selecting windows in time, could support any story they wished to tell. Our politicians on both sides of the isle seem to do this on a daily basis. Bottom line......... as much as I respect data and science, there is no more powerful indicator of what truly is going on in the wilderness than those that live and experience it on a daily basis. That includes me and why I think I can contribute to these types of conversations "half" intelligently.

That made absolutely no sense. But it's ok, I understand. You got called out and are flustered and frustrated because you have no answer. I am certain there is a campus nearby that has a corner and a coloring book set aide for you. Run along now.

BusterAZ, have you hunted AZ/NM border units or camped in those units? If so have you been there more than a few days, weeks a year? If so have you not heard the howls and watched elk jump into wallows and watch cows push calves into wallows and ponds to defend the young? If you’ve watched that did you stay to see the aftermath of calves dead and half dead and cows bleeding so bad that they’ll die soon? If you witnessed that did you stay long enough to see rotting bodies that were never eaten? Just curious.

Buster, Let preface what I am about to say with, I am an uneducated non degree holder. Now about data collection, it been my experience that data is not collected by the professor but by a few RA students needing a good grade and will many times adhering to the preconceived whims of whatever there presumptions are. It doesn't take a scientist to see that there were more elk before the hybred dogs were released in AZ and other places and it would be a safe assumption to say those dogs are part of the reason. So trphyhntr just might be onto something when he doesn't believe everything that's told him as gospel truth, furthermore, his opinion is just as valid as yours; because he as actually séen the effects those dogs have on the elk population.

It has been my observation than the more degrees involved, the less common sense is demonstrated.

They should be shot and turned into dog food.

How do you think the population should be manged AZBH88? Pretty much every animal in the state is managed in some way. I wonder if a lion would try and kill a horse? I am sure they would, but it would have to be really hungry or some kind of circumstance. I honestly do not hunt the areas where the horses are a problem, but I do hunt where the Donkey population has exploded. With none or very few predators and no hunting season, they have become an absolute PIA. They tear the landscape up pretty bad.

The burros and horses are just stockpiled food for when the economy gets to rough in my book.

This is like gizzard shad in Roosevelt. Or roaches in your yard.
  14. 1 point
This has nothing to do with owning horses
  15. 1 point
Explain it to me cuz you’re not making any sense the horses in the 3s escaped during the rodeo fire for the most part

That’s against the law and whenever a horse is killed it’s front page news.

Hunters and other people don’t manage it. Neither does azgfd. Someone should though
  19. 1 point
Yeah they should. They’re an invasive species nothing more

Im assuming that you look down on anyone who made a mistake and payed for it. There are good people in prison and bad people that are not in prison.
  21. 1 point
I have said it before. Feed them to the inmates in the state prisons. Win win for everyone.

Ya but we are close to legalized lynching of anyone who looks at them wrong.

the horses on our Arizona ranges serve zero purpose other than the few folks who drive around to photo them. I just don't get people at times, zero common sense on issues. Same goes for the hundreds and hundreds of burros, the larger issue is people though, we are on a one way road as humans to really just ruin this whole dam ride
